Having a guy with mutton chops on your team is always a positive.

I took Jack Cust cause I desperately need another bopper in my lineup and he fits the bill. Good OBP guy too and I think he's still only 30

I took Ellsbury for speed and OF defense. If he continues to hit it will be a bonus for me.

I f***ing despise you.

I was going to pick Ellsbury to be my leadoff hitter.

But here ya come an take him, nice.

LOL I'm glad I decided to take him with my first pick, rather then waiting for my next pick to come around here shortly.

He's a s*** leadoff hitter though, doesn't get on base enough. I thought of taking him too if he fell to me but only cause I have Upton and Crawford at the top of my lineup as it is. I could've buried Ellsbury at 7-8-9

Orlando Hudson is the best defensive 2nd baseman in the game, he can hit, and is still relatively young, and guys with his skillset tend to age well anyways.

With him i fix my two number 2's: 2nd base and the 2 spot in the lineup.

Billy Butler this early is an odd choice' date=' but his minor league numbers really can't be ignored.[/quote']

I think his offensive tools should not be in question.

Taking him at 1B though, might be a stretch.

I, too, wanted Ellsbury. Knew it was a long shot that he'd fall to me. For some reason, I intensely dislike Billy Butler.

He's reasonably young and he isn't embarrassing himself in the field this year. He'll never win a gold glove but he seems to be able to learn the position, has yet to make an error and is actually making a good rate of out of zone plays (tied for 4th in the American League). With his hitting tools he's a guy you reach for.

any comments about the Cust pick? I think he's pretty comparable to Carlos Pena (offensively at least) who was taken 5 rounds earlier. Cust has good numbers considering he plays for an awful hitting team in a cavernous ballpark
Posted
yea man real good pick, i like it, big hitter and he's been in a bad ballpark so that makes him even better. and pena is a good comparison to him, very similar hitters. And is defense really worth 5 rounds? i dont think so anyway. in conclusion good pick and good post. and good avator, and name, and status, and anti-fantasy team overall.

Cust is a solid pick fo the DH spot, I find it interesting that a lot of these picks are being classified as DH spots so early - I would have thought positions would be filled first.

I like the Cust pick. He's got power, gets on base, and is only 30.

I wanted to fill all of my positions before I got a DH, but I couldn't pass up Dunn. And since he can't play defense to save his life, I knew I had to make him a DH. If I had picked a good first baseman or corner outfielder in the second round instead of my brain fart pick of Cano, I wouldn't have been in this position. Don't get me wrong: I like Cano, but I took him way too early. That's the only pick I've made that I can honestly say was a mistake.

I've got a gold glover at first base anyway

and thank you for the kind comments, tuff guy

I wouldn't have taken Cust. Tremendous power, but he's teetering on Steve Balboni territory and those guys can lose it as they hit their mid to late 30's. And when it goes, it's bad.

1. Steve Balboni had a .296 career OBP and peaked at .320. Cust has him beat big time in that category.

2. What specific reason can you give that Cust would lose his power as opposed to anyone else in baseball?

I don't think he would lose his power. The way these guys fall is that they lose the ability to make consistent enough contact. That skill with Cust is already pretty marginal.

Might I be making too much of it? Sure. But I definitely prefer a guy who starts out with decent contact skills and then adds power on top of it. There's no guarantee in anything but those guys generally last longer.

Cust > Butler

Really?

Cust OPS: .804

Butler OPS .809

Not to mention that Butler is what, 23? And Cust at age 30 is going to keep pace with the kid over the next 5 years?

Butler is rounding into form nicely and is a big part of the reason KC is over .500 right now. He's going to be a freakin' monster.
