Yankees sign Kevin Cash.

*******s move. No other way to slice it.....just a bunch of D-bags over there.....looks like they really want to get the rivalry going in full force again.

Legit move, tho. They need catching, and why not sign a guy who understands a division competitor's operations? Sox should have locked him up. Hope the Tek/Salty/Pudge showdown pays off for Boston...

It's a good depth move, but they have Posada and Molina on the 25 man to start the year. As for the Sox, I'm content with Kottaras as the backup to whoever ends up the catcher, OR a platoon of Tek and a young guy.

Welcome to the site, by the way.

D'Backs Sign Snyder To Extension

By Tim Dierkes [December 30 at 10:20am CST]

According to ESPN's Jerry Crasnick, the Diamondbacks reached a preliminary agreement with catcher Chris Snyder on a three-year, $14.25MM contract extension. The deal will also have a fourth-year club option. Arizona buys out two arb years, one free agent year, and then has the option on the second free agent year. Nick Piecoro broke the story a week ago, with similar details.

Does this make Montero anymore available?

Cabrera's best season was a 7.3 WARP in 2001 for Montreal. His second best was a 6.5 WARP in 2008. By comparison, Ellsbury had a 6.4 last year and his season was considered disappionting.

I've heard both Abreu and Giambi connected to Oakland. Would signing Abreu break away from Billy Beane's Moneyball philosophy though?

The Giants sound interested in Manny, so maybe he goes there.

D-Lowe actually rejected the Mets' offer tonight, so maybe the Sox are still in on him. The Phillies and Braves are still interested.

Abreu defines Beane's philosophies, for the most part.

Abreu defines his philosophies in terms of on field play, but on the surface he is an unorthodox addition to a team concerned with maxamizing its finances. In another thread I talked about the book "Diamond Dollars". This could be a win-now move for Beane, which could potentially make the franchise tens of millions of dollars if it results in a playoff run. Get Giamboid, get Abreu, keep Holliday for the entire season. The payoff to the franchise of getting to the playoffs could pay for Giamboid and Abreu for this year, and having them for a few more years makes them a potentially viable playoff team in the future, which leads to even more dollars. Those bucks could be enough to justify not moving Holliday at the deadline, and if they are out of contention he can move Holliday and get a nice few pieces back.

Any franchise that wants to make money should occasionally invest heavily and try to make a run to get extra ticket sales, advertizing, publicity, etc., which will last for a few years. Teams simply cant remain viable otherwise... PIT and KC both come to mind.

Except that the A's couldn't even sell out playoff games when they originally had Giambi, Zito, Hudson, et al. The only reason he'd want to win now is to try to make the team a hotter commodity so that it could get out of Oakland sooner.

That's what I was thinking in that Abreu doesn't strike me as coming cheap, and the A's are always about maximizing finances. But then I've read he may have to settle for a one-year deal, so maybe he will be cheap.

Beane has signed veterans to short-medium term, fairly expensive contracts before. In the 05-06 off-season he signed Esteban Loaiza for 3/21.375, and in the 06-07 off-season he signed Mike Piazza for 1/8.5. It wouldn't be unreasonable.

This is true. I just keep thinking about all the big players they've had in the past (Mulder, Zito, Hudson, etc.) that they let go because they wouldn't pay them.

If Abreu has to settle for a one-year deal it really shows how s***** the financial market is for every team in need not named the Yankees. It seems like the true "money ball" approach might be winning out, as Abreu would be most valuable to a team close to contention, who needs a few wins to be up with the divisional big boys.

Would he make sense for a team like the Mariners, who, as of now, have Wladimir Balentien listed as both the starting LF and CF on their depth chart, and have Johjima listed as the top DH candidate? They may suck too much to make an expenditure worth it. Seems like the A's fit that mold better. Other teams that might stand to make some $$ with the wins Abreu could add: Cleveland, MIN, Toronto (?).

I'm pretty sure they had all 3 as drafted players, so they owned them for 6 years at MLB minimum and arbitration salaries. It made the most financial sense to sell them for more 6 year owned players and cheap deals who can come close to replicating the older player's value in wins.

Beane is very good at what he does.

Cleveland could use him, but I doubt they do any more big spending since they already aquired Wood for 2/20. Minnesota already has a good young OF (Gomez, Span, etc) so I really wouldn't look for them to go after him. Maybe if San Fran whiffs on Manny they will try and land Abreu at a cheaper price.
