  1. Mid-level starting pitcher, 2 catchers, and a fourth outfielder. No surprises there, but maybe they sign one of the power bats on the market or make a trade we don't see coming... They have the chips to deal and the financial flexibility to spare.
  2. For what it's worth, some articles today say that Tex's wife never liked the idea of playing in Boston, and that he personally had concerns about what would happen to Mike Lowell (both if he stayed or if he was traded away). I wonder how early on the Yankees really expressed their interest?
  3. They've got such payroll flexibility and a deep farm system... it's hard to imagine them not contending, though the strength of the AL East always makes missing the playoffs a real possibility.
  4. Looks like the Youk deal possibility is dead, but I hope they wrap up Lester. Ace of the staff last year, projected by several outlets to be even better this year... an innings horse, 94-96, lefty. Gotta wrap him up young if they can.
  5. Grrrrreat stuff, but I worry about any power pitcher with injury problems, and any pitcher making the NL -> AL transition. More fail than succeed, and I don't see the Sox overpaying for a guy who hasn't proven he can make that move.
  6. ...I forgot to add: I wonder how much he's asking for? Any guesses? I haven't seen a single rumor article about it.
  7. Worse news, I think, is that Youk seems resigned to do year to year arbitration and leave the Sox. I wonder how much he resents how they held his development years back to control his MLB service time at a later age... If Youk has another year threatening 30HRs/120RBIs, it'll be tough for the Sox to let this hometown favorite walk.
  8. And now Bobby Abreu, Garret Anderson, or Jason Giambi might join the As? Could be a decent lineup. Holliday was a steal.
  9. Amen. He was a longevity guy, a K guy, but never a clear case for the most dominating performance in a single season. All of his no-hitters and Ks are a fun stat, but that's HoF material, not Cy material.
  10. K-Rod should benefit quite a bit by moving to the NL, but all of last year's innings, plus the workload he's bound to carry as a Met, don't bode well for the later years of the deal.
  11. My fave player all time, but I hope he retires. Dominant as he was, it's hard to watch a second-rate Pedro. The last few years make for lousy numbers on an otherwise impressive resume...
  12. This is a big deal - it means his condition 1) can be treated and 2) can be treated just with meds. Teams will still be cautious, but he should land somewhere and do well. His preference to DH might keep him from the Sox, though...
  13. Too bad he created his own frustration -- his midseason antics with the Sox have got to be the singular reason why teams have kept him at arm's length to this point. Boras miscalculated. He'll end up with 2-3 years from the Dodgers or Angels, probably... but for his production, he should be getting a lot more money. A shame. He could have retired as a legendary Sox player... he'll enter the HoF with a Sox cap, but he could've had a Sox number retired.
  14. He's durable and he eats up innings with relatively quality starts. Low velocity, easy delivery should maintain his health. For short money, a solid pickup for any team...

    Pujols

Anybody know who his agent is off-hand? (Not to say that will be his agent when it comes time to make a deal...) Can never count the Yankees out, but they should be a long shot. Much depends on whether Pujols would accept the possibility of an AL team DH'ing/platooning him in the late years of the next contract.
  16. Legit move, tho. They need catching, and why not sign a guy who understands a division competitor's operations? Sox should have locked him up. Hope the Tek/Salty/Pudge showdown pays off for Boston...
  17. The Yankees spending hasn't translated to championships, and the luxury tax and revenue sharing have put plenty of money into the coffers of other teams... so who cares about a cap? MLB has enjoyed great parity in the last decade. How many small market teams have made the playoffs, or at least been competitive? Oakland, Minnesota, Tampa Bay, Milwaukee, Florida... the system works.
  18. There's a good article in today's Boston Globe about the Sox scouting organization. Focuses a bit on Lars Anderson. Among other things, it says the Sox have arguably the best in MLB, and it talks about how the Sox are offering bigger dollars than a slot would normally command to stockpile their system.
