Torre can't manage a bullpen. Period. Never knew how, just had the horses.

Think Grady Little versus Tito Francona. Exact same thing. I can't believe you are actually arguing this point.

Like I said, the main reason I put that in my sig was that all the Yankee fans here, mostly jacko, were blaming Torre for every little thing, most of which wasn't his fault.

I agree, he was poor at managing the bullpen, but he made the playoffs every year...that has to count for something. I understand that the players get a lot of the credit for that, but some of it has to fall to the manager. He gets blamed when they lose but he gets no credit when they win? Something is wrong with that. You can't have it both ways. There were negatives with Torre, clearly, but it got to the point where the positives weren't being acknowledged and that's an issue in my book.

torres best work came in his last 3 years.

the yanks are playing well against the scatine of the league which they had to do..

i heard michael kay say ""FARNSWORTH HAS A NO HITTER GOING"" ohh 500 friggin times last night.

why hasnt some one put this unmitigated heathen ball washing sycophant out of his misery with 2 to the ear??...i would enjoy the game much more if the cheerleading section of yankee baseball could be silenced until they actually accomplish something, the YES network should have someone with testoserone doing their broadcasts.

Moose pitches another strong game today. Hawkins blew again and tried to give it up. Sucks that Girardi had to call on Mo to close it out today. He should still be well rested for the series this weekend.

Joe Torre used his better pitchers at the right time, in save situations, each of his last five years managing the Yankees (I didn't check before 2003). Despite having Jon Papelbon, Terry Francona can't seem to do that.

I will give Torre credit, he did bring in Mo when the game needed saving. He never brought him in before the 8th though and he'd bring him into games that werent even close. He would also "ride the hot hand" which would invariably end up with a loss of effectiveness for that player due to fatigue and then also lead to rust for the other bullpen guys.

What a bunch of ungrateful pricks! First we take two from the Rays on 8 and 9 July to help the RSox get within striking distance of first place before the AS break. The Rays go on an extended losing streak and the Sox go into the break in first place - You're Welcome!! The Sox then proceed to hand first place back to the Rays after the break and the White Knights from the Bronx once again step in and help the Sox in their battle with the Twinkies for the WC standings - Again, You're Welcome.

We are still waiting for you to thank us for protecting your standings in the "Teams Stupid Enough to play Richie Sexson" category.

The twins and the sox were neck and neck in the WC race. They are not awful. The Mariners are awful.
They are both awful. The Twins record is very misleading, because they totally stink.

Their record looks pretty because they got on that hot streak against the National League and then carried that streak into a series with some crappy AL Central teams (Cleveland and Detroit) before getting swept at Fenway.

Girardi's kept everyone in the bullpen fresh and effective, without overusing arms out there. I don't think you can point to one guy in that bullpen that has pitched more than he should have, and that was a problem under Torre. He'd fall in love with 'his guys' and they'd lose their effectiveness, while other guys in the bullpen would rust.

Edwar Ramirez is an example. He pitched July 3rd and July 6th in 2007, and then not again until July 20th. He got lit up in his 3rd appearance, and then didn't pitch again for another month. Stuff like that hasn't happened under Girardi, and that has been a factor in getting the most out of players.

So the conversation about the Yankees on this site has shifted away from the play on the field. However, they do play tonight vs. the Orioles.

Mussina vs. Guthrie

At 7:30 EDT Mussina had received five gifted strike calls from umpire Sam Holbrook, pretty impressive considering that he'd thrown only four called strikes that he'd deserved.

The Orioles are getting the regulation strike zone thus far.

Is Moose's internal clock in the central time zone and he thinks it's time for batting practice?

Unfortunately he is doing anything but taking advantage of his expanded strike zone. The Orioles seem to have his number this year.

EDIT: Nice job by Moose to get back to back strikeouts of Mora and Scott to strand Huff at second. Need some runs here...

Actually, JHB, I'm sorry if this should be obvious to me, but where are you getting your data from? I only ask because I would like to be able to look these things up also.

Moose sucks. Where is Johan when you need him?

Yeah, Moose has had a pretty bad year thus far.

And all I know about Johan Santana is that Phil Hughes and Ian Kennedy haven't exactly dominated so far...
