Right' date=' but I've maintained the Sox will have to negotiate. You are the one trumpeting the "Boras won't have to compromise" meme.[/quote']

No, I have trumpeted that Boras will not have to compromise if his actual motives do not include sending Matsuzaka to Boston. If his motives lie elsewhere, then there is no reason for him to come down from his lofty demands.

Completely disagree' date=' Boras is completely helpless here. If her sends DMat back he'll have trouble with future Japanese players. So far, Theo is the one making proposals while Boras makes statements to the press. I'm comfortable if Theo just leaves it on the table and goes back to Boston. Boras' ego may far exceed his skills this time. This mess is becoming too much trouble for a guy who's never played in the big leagues.[/quote'] But Theo didn't leave it on the table. If he were smart, he would have realized his $8 million per year would be good enough and he'd make Boras sweat it out. He upped his offer before he got a counter proposal.

There is no way he doesn't go to Boston, but Theo is just forcing them to spend more and more money on the guy. He's playing into Boras' hands by looking desperate. They could very well end up spending over $20 million per year total on the guy, and that would be a huge mistake.

Bite me' date=' worse than Albert Belle? Unless you have a link Id be careful about stepping in that ********.[/quote']

Chan Ho Park?? Mike Hampton?? just to name a few There are MANY worse than the Drew signing, which isnt even one of the worst this offseason (Lee, Piere, Meche).

No idea where jacksonian got that

At the time of the signing. Of course there is retrospect, but the sox were bidding against themselves for a guy who has missed a ton of time on multiple occasions. I am only reporting what I read.

$100+ million for Kevin "I hurt my back" Brown

Yes I whole-heartedly agree on Lee. Many predict him to be a DH in 2 or 3 years, due to his size and declining skills in the outfield. The Houston Astros, an NL team, signed him to a 6 year/$100 million contract. Gary Matthews Jr is a career 4th outfielder who had a career year and was given 5 years/$50 million by the Angels

Ya no, if you just think about all of the money that's being handed to players these days, it's incredible... I mean just some of the signing player got this off-season got are unbelievable...

Why the hell should Matsuzaka get as much money as Boras wants, really, there is no reason, Boras is just holding out on the Sox until he hears a number way out of the ordinary(like it isn't already)... he has throw one pitch in the Majors, he hasn't proven himself except that he was the MVP of the WBC but still it not the same as the MLB...

(Don't get me wrong this guy is great supposibly, and I want him on the Sox, anyway...)

When did baseball become all about money, what happened to the love of the game...?

Look at what ballplayers get, a job of there dreams, millions of dollars, etc... it's rediculus... even the ESPN announcers are saying players are getting way to much money these days... and it's true...

Hey, at least we get great baseball every season though, but nothings gonna change, especially now a days, except the price tag increasing every year... but then again, it's not our money... is it?

Sorry if this has already been gone through' date=' but didn't someone (Boras or the Sox FO don't remember) hold a press conference at like 12:30 AM today?[/quote']

Sox FO.

Sox to make new "record" offer tomorrow

By Gordon Edes, Globe Staff

Red Sox GM Theo Epstein in a post-midnight conference call described the dramatic turn that took place last night in the negotiations for Daisuke Matsuzaka, saying that with John W. Henry providing the plane, he and CEO Larry Lucchino flew to southern California, unsolicited, for a meeting with agent Scott Boras in the Daisuke Matsuzaka negotiations.

Epstein said the team plans to make another offer tomorrow, one that will be the largest ever given to a player who has never played in the big leagues, and the largest given to a Japanese player. But it remains to be seen if that will satisfy Boras, who has made the case that Matsuzaka is one of the game's elite pitchers and should be paid as such, with no weight given to the size of the bid the Sox paid for exclusivity to negotiate with him. That $51.1 million, Boras has stated, is just another indication of how valuable a talent Matsuzaka said.

A feisty John W. Henry, frustration evident in his voice, said: ""I think it's also fair to say we're on Scott Boras's doorstep because he hasn't negotiated with us so far. We're taking the fight directly to him to try to have a negotiation here.''

if Boras is demanding $100 mil for 6 years, I say do it. Like it or not, that's what the market is at these days and unless you want to build your staff completely though your farm, this is going to be the price you're going to have to pay

I don't understand why the Sox won't just offer a 10m per contract to Matzu with incentives that bump it up to tyhe 16m range. Someting like top 5 in ERA - extra $1m, top 5 in K - extra $1m, 200+ innings - extra $1m, etc. That way if he pitches like a stud, he gets paid like a stud, but if he flounders it isn't like he;s going to go broke.

I hear that... but Boras wants guaranteed money. And status.

What I would love. Just love. Is for the Sox to get Matsu for 17 million/year but to then back out of the Drew deal. f*** Boras and claim something came up on the physical.

if Matzu gets 90m over 5 years, the Sox would have spent $210m (posting fee included) on two of Bora's clients over the next five years at an average of $40m per year to Drew/Mat. WOW.

If you don't give them rookie eligibility you have to give them MLB service time...wouldn't that make them FA's faster?

thats the way it should be, they're getting paid like FA's anyway. The whole posting system is broke, we need to totally abandon it.

I think the question will ultimately be.....is this guy worth the posting fee + the deal to get him here.

If you ask me, I say no....but the Sox cant walk away from this and embarass not only RSN, but the United States and MLB for their dumb ass posting fee rules and regs.

I guess Scott Boras has to ask the question of whether or not he wants to truly go through this and possibly sever ties to Japanese players, bc i think this hurts his reputation as an agent in Japans eyes bc he didnt get it done.

It seemed a little ridiculous at the time, but as the offseason progresses it becomes more and more worth it to the Sox. Think about it. If this falls through, the only other real pitcher on the market is Zito (and Clemens, yes, but that will be another mid-season signing where ever he goes). Zito's flaws in a place like Fenway have been discussed at length here. With the other viable options now off the market, the value of getting a pitcher like Matsuzaka is increasing, making the huge deal that they are going to eventually sign that much more palatable.

I think the last trump card they had was hoping to talk to dice-k. Now it is them and Boras. That's all. They wont win this without giving in. Tonight is the true deadline. Theo wants a physical before consummating a deal and that will take a day. If nothing by tonight' date=' you can return that matsuzaka jersey you bought, cause he wont be coming to botown.[/quote']Why, can't a physical be administered in CA? There are no medical facilities there?
Posted
With the sox docs my friend. A baseball physical involves MRI's which take a while to do and even longer to read. It is an all day process' date=' and the sox facilities are on the east coast.[/quote']How do you know that Sox FO did not bring their Docs to CA?
