Sounds like Theo takes the upper hand in putting this out in the middle of night and leaving D-Mat and Boras with little choice but to take it, or look like fools. Nice work, let's hope this guy can pitch great.

If Theo had the upper hand, Matsuzaka would be playing for $8 million a year. Don't kid yourself.

The fact that he's upped his offer without receiving a counter proposal tells me that Boras is still controlling these negotiations. The deal will get done, the question is how much is Theo going to bend over for Boras.

I guess we're finally gonna get it done

Can't wait to see Daisuke pitch!

I agree with you there buddy!

I knew all along that the actual negotiations would happen down to the wire. Also knowing full well that the Sox will not let Matsuzaka go without a fight, as some posters have suggested the opposite

Sox officials havent spoken to D-Mat (who is currently in LA with Boras) since the dinner they had with him last month. It seemed evident tha Boras was with-holding them from even speaking to them. As well as him stalling D-Mat's first trip to Boston only if he is actually signed.... Solution: The Yawkey Way gang fly to LA to get all in his face

Theo knows that it will take a king's ransom to get this "Asian Pedro", sacrifices must be made

dont speak too soon. If they are saying that it is going to be the largest offer to an unproven player, then they will be surpassing the 8mil a yr threshold, which is half of what he is looking for anyways. If they surpass Matsui's new contract, then they will surpass 12mil. If they surpass Matsui's contract and he doesnt agree, then you know DMat has accepted the credo of in Boras he trusts.

If I recall, the snippet was that this would be the largest contract ever to a Japanese player. Largest. Let that word sink in. It says nothing about annual value. A 6 yr, $54M deal is the "largest" ever. Another case of the media getting a buzz word in there. Based on the way it was reported, we know nothing about the annual value of the contract.

I think we've allowed something to slip through the cracks. Is Boras really willing to risk him going back to Japan? I think the answer is yes if he's certain he can keep Matsuzaka as a client. But I don't think that is a certainty. Matsuzaka is a hero, as Boras mentioned, over there. If this falls through, I doubt Matsuzaka will get much blame publically. Boras will be the fall guy - it is his job to get the deal done. The Sox will get blamed too, but I think there's a strong chance Boras loses Matsuzaka as a client if this doesn't get done. Then he gets nothing when Matsuzaka becomes a FA. I think he takes the sure thing (money now).

I think Boras is doing this kid a favor financially, but you may be right. The rep hit will be huge. Granted, Boras has never been one to shy away from being portrayed as the villain, so maybe he sends Matsuzaka back to Japan with everyone hating him, then come 2 yrs from now, Boras is again his client when he negotiates the mega deal.

Also, one may have to consider the rumor from a month ago, when there was speculation if Matsuzaka even wanted to play in Boston. Everyone knew he wanted to be a yankee, now he is being negotiated with by their enemy. It is interesting to watch this fold out.

If Boras takes less than what he has stated is fair value for Matsuzaka he risks a lot. The latest estimates for Zito are $100M plus, he already convinced Boston to spend $14M per year on Drew. Boras is in the drivers seat, he knows Boston will pay now or someone else will in two years. Boras is the biggest snake ever in pro sports and I cannot recall a single deal where he did not get exactly what he wanted. This deal with Matsuzaka will happen IMHO, but at a price that Boston will not be very happy with. Theo needs to stop including the $51M in the rationale for Boston's offer. It has nothing to do with the contract.

But a negotiating session set up with Boras after Epstein and Lucchino arrived was called off yesterday, according to a source with first-hand knowledge of the negotiations, when Boras informed the officials that he had decided not to allow Matsuzaka to sit in on the meeting.

Lucchino said that a meeting has been scheduled for today with Boras and Matsuzaka. Asked if Matsuzaka's presence was guaranteed, Lucchino said: "That was the plan, for him to be there."

Lucchino and Epstein stressed how important signing Matsuzaka was to the Red Sox. "We don't want this thing to fail for lack of effort," Lucchino said.

What the ******* Boras is. He's trying to keep Matsuzaka from talking to Boston (which is something the Sox can bring a case to Bud Selig), he knows that Matsuzaka will be more inclined to get a deal done with Boston

they cannot take a case to selig on that. He is being an agent here and if they want to speak to matsu and make it public and he doesnt show, then he is heeding the advice of his agent, which is not against league policy.

I think the last trump card they had was hoping to talk to dice-k. Now it is them and Boras. That's all. They wont win this without giving in. Tonight is the true deadline. Theo wants a physical before consummating a deal and that will take a day. If nothing by tonight, you can return that matsuzaka jersey you bought, cause he wont be coming to botown.

Was Drew sitting in on the negotiations for his contract? Boras is doing what he is paid to do, get the most money for his client. Allowing Matsuzaka to sit in and be swayed for anything less than what Boras is demanding would be a mistake for Boras. He didn't become the wealthiest agent in pro sports by being stupid. He knows what he is doing. If you think Boras is playing hardball now, wait till next year: Andruw Jones

Man, you really can't read the tea leaves, can you? Boras has already given himself an out for when Matsuzaka signs, and why do it unless he knows he's going to sign. By saying, "In the end, it's Daisuke's decision", he's got a built in excuse for not getting FA market value for him. This deal is getting done.

The drama that is Boras. If he wasn't going to sign a "last minute" deal there would have been no reason for Matsuzaka to travel to the U.S. on Saturday. Boras is stating that he is a $100M player and Theo does not disagree, however, the sticking point seems to be that Theo believes the $51M posting fee should be considered as part of that $100M, Boras disagrees.

HeadofSoxNation", the post is coming from a Yankee fan saying for us to return "Matsuzaka" jerseys because he's not coming to Boston

And no he's only right if its confirmed that D-Mat is returing to Japan

He said that if nothing is in place tonight, that we can go ahead and return the jerseys because the deal's not going to get done and he's not going to be in Boston. He's 100% correct, IMO. They still need time to get a physical done before a deal can become official, and for that to happen, they'd have to get something done by tonight. And, if the Sox posted high and he didn't get signed...there's no WAY he's going to want to try to negotiate with the Sox again whenever he gets to be a "real" FA.

Ok why are you repeating basically what I said in my reply post to you?? My main point is that a Yankee fan is telling Sox fans to return merchandise for a player Red Sox Nation were praying to be in Boston.

Why are you talking as if Matsuzaka is on the same level as Boras? Boras is keeping him quiet and using the "only I know English" card because he knows he wants to be in Boston now. Would Matsuzaka really be turned off in 08 if say the Sox's final offer being declined was 5 year/$14 per? A guy who made $3 million last season

I just think Yankee fans get jumped on for saying stuff here that if any Sox fan said, no one would bat an eyelash. I don't think if I would have said "Oh jeez, this doesn't look good. I'd say if nothing gets done tonight, we can all get in line to return our Matsuzaka jerseys" anyone would have called it a trollish post or gotten bent out of shape about it. It's just a double standard, I think.

Boras is the kid's freaking AGENT...that's what agents do; they handle the negotiations for the player. I don't understand why this is so new to everyone.

apparently you have absolutely no clue what a trollish post is. Sigh, kids these days calling everything trollish without merit.

My post was essentially stating the logistics of the situation. Theo wants a deal done prior to a physical being performed. A deal must be struck by the end of the day today in order for Matsuzaka to get a physical in time. And you cannot have a deal pending a physical when the deadline comes, he is either signed or he isnt. If not by end of day today, then it wont happen. If you think that is trollish, then you should break out a dictionary my friend and do yourself some learnin so you can get smarter.

Completely disagree, Boras is completely helpless here. If her sends DMat back he'll have trouble with future Japanese players. So far, Theo is the one making proposals while Boras makes statements to the press. I'm comfortable if Theo just leaves it on the table and goes back to Boston. Boras' ego may far exceed his skills this time. This mess is becoming too much trouble for a guy who's never played in the big leagues.

Right, but I've maintained the Sox will have to negotiate. You are the one trumpeting the "Boras won't have to compromise" meme.

Posted
The Sox, Yankees and Mets set the value for Boras when they made their ridiculous bids for the right to negotiate with Matsuzaka. Boras' stand has only been reinforced with the dollars that Drew, Meche, Matthews, Jr., Pettite and many others are receiving this off-season.
