Matsuzaka wants $11M per year; Sox offering $8M

Posted by Michael Silverman at 4:03 am

COSTA MESA, Calif. — Pessimism from both sides of these Daisuke Matsuzaka talks rules the day, or early morning, but talks are not dead and the deadline is still not until Thursday (in case you hadn’t heard).

No one wants to go on the record as of yet but here’s the latest info, according to plugged-in sources: The Red Sox’ latest offer to Matsuzaka is six years for $8 million. Matsuzaka has counter-offered with six years for $11 million and that is the deal the Red Sox are weighing heading into the early hours of Wednesday morning.

The Red Sox are saying that if Matsuzaka is not on John Henry’s plane that heads back to Boston this morning, there is no chance of the deal getting done because he will not have time to have a physical. Matsuzaka’s camp is not concerned with the Red Sox’ timeline on private jets and physicals.

Basically, both sides are becoming more adamant about how they are willing to walk away from this deal, and this is after the Red Sox got their face to face meeting, however brief, with Matsuzaka Tuesday night. The Red Sox are shaking their heads, wondering how Matsuzaka and his agent Scott Boras can overlook the $51.11 million that they will send to the Seibu Lions if Matsuzka signs, meaning a total commitment of more than $99 million. Meanwhile Matsuzaka and Boras are wondering if the Red Sox think Daisuke Matsuzaka is Japanese for “Gil Meche'’ or “Randy Wolf.'’

How does $9.5 million a year for six years sound? Anyone? Anyone?

I said I wouldn't comment on this until after the deadline, but if they don't seriously consider siging this guy for 11M a year I will place full blame on the Sox FO. This is stupid, I was with them when it was said Boras wanted like 16-20M a season, but 11M it completely reasonable at this point in time. Boras is an ******* and I hate him, but this seems like a nice deal at 6 years 11M a seasson(if it is true).

SIDENOTE: 6 years, 11M a season, thats 6y 66M, 666 I knew Boras was the devil!LOL:o

could you post a link? Regardless of the time issue, that should still be on the boston herald website

In a market where Gil Meche gets 5 years $55 million, Matsuzaka is ABSOLUTELY worth 6 years $66 million.

If that's the offer, the Red Sox should take it in a heartbeat.

Sorry RS I havent learned to post a link, its on Bostonherald.com and I think last I checked it was the 1st article you see after clicking on sports, then click on redsox/mlb. Sorry for the confusion.

Sure thing, you just right click on the link making it highlighted. A menu comes up and you click on copy, do that twice just to make sure it went through. Then you go back to talksox, in the reply box you right click again and instead click paste

Im perplexed to say the least. Didnt Theo say it would be a record offer to a player who hasnt played in the majors, let alone a Japanese player?? Matsui signed $52 million contact recently so his offer should trump that. If Boras is now just asking for 6 year/$66 million, take the f***ing kid to the Hub already

Thats what makes me kinda iffy on this report. Because if that is the true price matsuzaka and Boras came back with, you would have thought hed be in Boston already taking his physical.

To me the deal actually sounds a little too good from our stand point. that and the fact no one else(that I can find, espn, foxsports, cbssportsline, bostonglobe,MLB ) has caught wind of this offer and reported it.

if this is true, i think the deal will be made. Matsuzaka asked for 11 million, the Sox said well think about it and now they probably will wake up this morning and either agree to that deal or make a counter offer around 9-10 million.

rotoworld--

The Boston Herald reports that the Red Sox's latest offer to Daisuke Matsuzaka is for six years and a total of $48 million, while Matsuzaka is asking for $66 million over six years.

If they're truly that close and can both agree on the deal's length, it seems likely that a deal can get done before Thursday's deadline. However, indications are that if Matsuzaka isn't on a plane back to Boston to take his physical by Wednesday afternoon, no deal will get done. We'll see.

6 66mil sounds like the counteroffer. I cannot even fathom why the sox would offer 6-48. That is barely Jason Marquis money. If I was considered as the best pitcher in the market where some guys were 16mil a yr players, I'd urinate on that offer, go back to Japan for 2 yrs and come back to make over double that. The sox do not know what they are doing.

Here's a link to Masseroti's lastest ramblings in the Herald:

I agree that teams need to start standing firm with Boras clients, but what Masseroti seems to be overlooking is, the Sox caved in to him when they gave Drew $14M per year contract with no other bidders. You can't overpay for one client and then expect to low ball the next client. They set the precedent themselves, now Boras is going to hold them to it. If Gil Meche can get $11M per year from the cellar dwelling Royals then Matsuzaka is surely worth that and more when you expect him to compete in the A.L. East. Also, stop referring to the $51M auction as part of salary considerations. Granted it figures in the overall investment, but it is totally separate from salary. Matsuzaka does not get the $51M.

I think everyone can almost agree that Matsuzaka is worth Meche money. He's worth much more than that. If that is the offer, and Henry/Lucchino/Epstein dont get a deal done, they deserve to be shot in the Boston Common. atleast the one('s) who was against the deal. Theo needs to wake up, go to Boras offices, tell him he agrees to the Matsuzaka deal and get on the plane with Boras and Matsuzaka.

I cant believe they'd pay 14 million for Drew and not take this Matsuzaka offer and run with it. Its a steal. It would be the best bargain of the offseason. (as long as you dont count the posting fee, which you shouldnt).

Given what everyone else is making, you're exactly right. I'd pay up to $14 million per season for Matsuzaka in this market
