Do you think people talk that way on purpose or are people just stupid?

I think its the new computer language. I have seen people who talk that way all the time on the internet. Most of the time I see it on AOL instant messenger. Its real confusing and annoying. Thank god this forum does a great job keeping them out.

Since I'm kind of elder statesman around here, or is it an old war horse, can I please implore you guys to quit this pissing contest. Let's talk Red Sox baseball, pro and con and show some respect for each other. I think this may be why the Boston Herald Forum Board went by the boards. There seems to be more anger and bile the past two weeks than there was when I first came on board. Let's get back to being civil one another. Hopefully, no one thinks I'm stepping out of line.

Well, it seems the thread got a bit off topic there for a page or few... but back to the topic in subject...I personally don't think Manny is going to end up going anywhere. He's just too damn expensive! 57 million dollars is not a small chunk of change, and there's no way the Sox will give him up without something incredible in return. I'd guess that a few more years (at least 1 or 2) and when his contract is a little cheaper, if he's still the power hitter he is now...maybe they'll move him. For now? I doubt it.

Well then Ky, the hell with the Angels. They are looking at falling through the cracks this year because of a rotten offense. Oakland and Texas are vastly improved and with a pop gun attack my wife, daughter and son-in-law's team are going to find out the hard way that they should have been a little less reluctant to make the trade. Besides, we want Manny here anyway. As for their sneaky and cheap GM, Bill Stoneface, I would advise him to get his resume ready because Arte Moreno will not stand to see his team fall from first to second or third because the GM was too lax to make the changes needed.

We certainly do want Manny in Boston. I think giving him up would be the wrong thing to do. Unless of course we got a seriously sweet deal in return....but like I said before, I really don't think any other club is going to be willing to pay what the asking price would be. This is a good thing IMO. :)

Now if we can only convince the Front Office to cease and desist from their attempts to trade Manny we can get on with the business at hand and prepare for Spring Training and get ready for a big 2006 season. :harhar: B)

I think they did that long ago. I don't have any sources on this but I have a gut feeling that all this Manny to the Angels crap is fabricated just to make Manny feel like they attempted to trade him when now there's just no takers.

Stocker, that is what I have usually thought, but with all these rumors I've been hearing out here (So. Cal) I'm reminded of the old saying---where there' smoke, there's fire." In my opinion it would be very foolhardy to trade Manny now especially since we tried and never came close to getting anything close to equal value for him.

Someone help me out here. Is Orlando Cabrera saying that Manny is unhappy due to the # of times Sox have tried to part with him? If so, I give up. He also talks about how the Angels are Manny's top pick.

Cabrera says Ramirez still wants out of Hub

By Jeff Horrigan

Wednesday, February 22, 2006 - Updated: 03:49 AM EST

Manny Ramirez may have agreed to arrive at spring training next week but he is still pining for an escape to the West Coast, according to ex-teammate Orlando Cabrera.

Cabrera told the Orange County Register yesterday that Ramirez said in several offseason telephone conversations that he still wants to join him with the Angels. “He really wanted me to talk to people here to tell them that he really wants to come here,” Cabrera said. “I don’t have that kind of power. I don’t mess around with that, trying to become the GM or anything like that. That’s not my job . . . (but) of course we’d like to have him. He’s a good guy to have around.”

He said Ramirez is unhappy after the Sox tried numerous ways to part with him, including putting him on waivers after the 2003 season and nearly trading him to the New York Mets last July. It is believed the Sox also spoke with the Angels, Mets, Baltimore Orioles and Cleveland Guardians (among others) this winter in a bid to honor Ramirez’ latest trade request but were unable to procure a suitable return package. “They’ve been trying to get rid of him for the last three years,” Cabrera said. “I don’t see no reason why he would be happy. If that was me and they were treating me like that, I wouldn’t be happy.”

Cabrera, the shortstop on the Sox’ 2004 World Series champions, said Ramirez would prefer a city with more low-key fans and media. “I think that’s what he’s looking for,” he said. “You know, as Latinos, we’re not used to that atmosphere at all. We think you show up, do your job and that’s it. In Boston, you have to have that relationship with the media. He doesn’t have that.”

he can forget about getting traded to the angels unless ervin santana, howie kenrick, and brandon wood are coming back in return along with another player. the angels had their chance but they chose to stand pat like they normally do.

Well, you don't need much help...that's what he's pretty much saying.

Of course, Manny's just dumb. He's a pro athlete. As long as he does his job on the field for the Boston Red Sox and doesn't let his "unhappiness" get in his way, I don't care what the f*** he wants. He makes 20 million a year to play for this team, so he needs to suck it up, and play.

IMO Manny's eccentric and sometimes bizarre behavior has scared off potential trade partners. No team wants to deal with crazy.

Hence what happened month & a half ago. The Sox were closing in on a deal with Baltimore, Miguel for Manny straight up. At the last minute, Manny made a new declaration that his 2 option years (40 million) had to be picked up for him to allow the trade. I honestly cant predict what will happen next. Who knows, Manny could end up staying here through the end of his contract in 2008.

EXACTLY. We're stuck with Manny Ramirez because nobody else is stupid enough to take on his contract and his attitude.

I'm counting the days until his contract runs out.

This didnt take long. On the New York Post is an article on about how the Mets should go after Manny. It also indicated that Beltran or Milledge are still untouchable, so whats the point of sending Manny to the Mets? Theo wont trade a player of his caliber for a bag of balls. Same thing goes for the Angels if they want to be serious.

I can think of worse things than being stuck with a guy who averages 7.2 WARP1 and over 27 Win Shares per year, even if it is at $19M per year. As a point of reference, Jeter makes the same amount and averages 5.9 WARP1 and 24.5 WS.

Word.

I never understand the money arguement when it comes to baseball. There's no cap ... so it's not like he's keeping you from getting other players.

Just because there is no cap doesn't mean there is no budget. The Red Sox have very high revenues, but they don't have a money tree. A $20 million a year contract absolutely keeps you from getting other players you'd like.

That said, Manny's contract might be high, but I'm sick of reading people talk about it like its the worst in baseball. He makes more than he would get as a free agent, but he produces like a top player in baseball. Most teams have contracts that hurt more than Mannys. How about Jim Thome in Philly last year, Tom Glavine and Carlos Beltran for the Mets, half the yankee roster(Bernie, Jeter, Giambi, Pavano, Jorge, Wright), Pat Burrel for philly, J.D. Drew for LA, Ordonez and Pudge on the Tigers. And thats probably only half the players that are more overpaid than Manny. At least our overpaid guy produces.
