The red sox apparently are still interested in trading Manny Ramirez. They offered him to the Angels for Ervin Santana, Chone Figgins, and 2-3 of the Angels top 5 prospects, and also refused to pay any of manny's salary. The angels, however, declined, largely in part to the fact that they would've had to shell out $57 million over the next three years.

Thanks for the news, you're the man, you saved me like five clicks and didnt even offer a pesky opinion for me to skim and disagree with. Thats perfect.

The trade would make me happy, too bad it likely isn't going to happen. Kendricks, Wood, Santana and Aybar are probably all off limits and Jerred Weaver can't be traded until june.

Who cares? He's rich, he has many homes. Him selling his condo was not a big deal. I actually know for a fact that Arroyo sold his house too, but no one cares because he probably isn't getting traded and he isn't the high profile guy Manny is.

THIS is the type of deal the sox SHOULD be looking for for Manny. Screw Abreu, Screw Tejada (though they are both FANTASTIC players). I love this proposal because I feel relatively certain that one at least two of those players will end up being very good players and they are all cheap, meaning they could be components rather than marquee guys. Get an Ervin Santana and a Chone Figgins, along with Kendrick and Wood and insist, no, DEMAND that the Angels pay all of Manny's salary. Turn around and pay top dollar for available future free agents (andruw jones? hafner? cabrera?) to build into that deep, deep team. If the red sox could get 85% of Manny's production for 40% of the current price, it would be a coup of historic proportions.

Everyone was looking for a proposed deal that actually got Manny's value back, I think that overall this is one example of one. it includes so many good players and tremendous prospects. The sox would easily be in contention (probably front runners) for the AL East for like 8 straight years in a year or two.

Anyway, 1) its completely unrealistic because the Angels understand the same thing and 2) the sox can compete this year with manny under contract. A nice proposal though.

EDIT: for clarity's sake, and punctuation

Yep. I love the proposal but I'm not going to take it seriously until I hear about more proposals going back and forth. It seems like there is nothing too this one because the demands are too high and they're probably just showing Manny that they're still going about their due dilligence with this thing. If this does happen I totally agree with you that it would be 100% worth it. You take his money and spend it on key parts and make it stretch a little better. Josh Beckett, Jon Papelbon, Jon Lester and Ervin Santana would be an amazing front four that really wouldn't be touched by any other team. Especially if they pony up the cash for a Zito or a Mulder next year, that could be an untouchable rotation.

Wood is a beast too, that is a guy who you build around. More solid in all categories than Marte, and that is not a knock on Marte.

I just don't see it happening yet, not until the Sox agree to pay half of manny or take a lesser offer something like Santana, Kendricks and Erstad, something like that.

True about that Sox could get a free agent starting pitcher next offseason, moreso because I believe this could be Wake's last year in the rotation. He will of course still be on the team for 07, but relegated to more of a solid middle relief option.

It's not happening:

Nobody will give up multiple prospects and take on his salary.

The Angels, however, were only willing to part with a package centered around overpaid and underproductive Darin Erstad. Stoneman won’t even discuss Wood and Kendrick, two of the top prospects in baseball.

Remember, he could have been picked up by anyone for just salary when he was placed on waivers. Put the new bathroom in for him behind the Green Monster and he'll be fine in Boston.

This is going to be an awful ongoing topic for weeks to come. Here's the deal, the sox want too much for Manny and the Angels want something for nothing. Moreno needs to squeeze his nads and figure out that the amount of prospects that they have in AAA and AA will never all find a spot on the MLB roster, some will have to move. I think Brandon Wood's stock is so high right now that he should be on the chopping block before he proves that he is just another Rich Aurilia instead of an ARod. If I were Moreno, I would send Wood, Erstad, and Joe Saunders to the sox for Manny and make sure to take on the entire contract. Manny is one of the best hitters in the league and Moreno has one of the most putrid offenses, he has to make a move. BUT, Moreno will not move his rooks and hence he wont make a good deal. Like I said, he wants something for nothing, and that aint gonna happen....

As I have been saying all the offseason and espically now, this Red Sox team can win the W.S this year, they cant break up up the best 1-2 duo in the leauge, if our pitching is as good as i think it will be, then this team can compete with anyone

With that kind of trade proposal it's obvious that the Red Sox have no real intentions of trading Manny and are just keeping him happy by "trying".

I don't know how you guys can deal with this. The ping-pong nature of the Manny saga, and "Manny being Manny", is getting a little old.

eh its now something i dont go into high panic mode or anything because by now it has nowhere near of a chance of actually getting done. Heck the Sox almost landed Tejada, but at the last minute Manny demanded Baltimore take his 2 extra option seasons. Course the O's scrapped it right away. Just give him a muzzle and his friend Enrique Wilson as a bench player, he'll still give 40/130 for the season

The angels need manny...they have NO offence beside Vladdy... As seen in the playoffs, all you have to do is pitch around vlad, and they are vulnerable, if they added manny there pitching and hitting may carry them through to the promise land so i dont see how they would not want to aquire him...how about ervin santana straight up for manny contract for contract....THINK ABOUT IT

That actually brings up a good point about keeping Manny. If we dealt him, then couldn't pitchers just pitch around Papi all the time? I mean, we have Lowell and Tek, but they're not Manny.

This is why the Sox were looking for a solid bat to protect Papi if they were going to trade Manny. I remember one game last year, I honestly don't know who they were playing but Manny had the day off and Papi was intentionally walked like four times. It was ridiculous.

mulder is done.. zito was so inconsistent last year.. at times he was lights out.. at others batters were tee'ing off on him...

i'de much rather spend the money on guys like ben sheets, jake peavy (yeah, they have extensions allready) andruw jones etc..

mulder had a good yr last yr, what are you talking about? Some of the criteria for being "done" on this site are sketchy...

Posted

Yeah, Mulder had a pretty good year last year.

His numbers have dropped though, and it seems like his best years were a few years ago. For THIS to be his drop though still makes him a pretty darn good pitcher. For some reason I never really think he is very good when I watch him, but he tends to do okay. The last few years his OBP against has gone up considerably into the .330 area (before it was consistently under 3). This has effected his OPS numbers as well, into the .750 area (for point of comparison, Beckett has never had an OPS against of .690). Perhaps that's why he's never impressed me too much; he's not a power pitcher really.

In any case, he's still a pretty good 2 (or, hopefully, if your team is good, a 3).

not sure if this was posted but the latest rumor of Manny to the Angels is coming from mlbtraderumors.

Red Sox receive Steven Shell, Kelvim Escobar, Juan Rivera, and a top prospect

....bad deal if you ask me. I would want to replace Escobar with Ervin Santana and Scott Shell with Scott Shields.

that is scott shields, there is nobody in their organization named scott shell. Shields would be a great pickup, but he is not worth enough to be dealt for Manny. Escobar is hurt every yr whether he starts or relieves and he has a penchant for breakdowns. Rivera can only hit lefties. This would be a good way to add depth for the sox, but it in no way would make them better. s***, I hope this happens....

also, there is NO way that they will deal Santana. I think we all saw in the playoffs how good this kid could be. He is young, he is strong and he might be the future of the AL along with King Felix....

I won't go that far. Felix Rodriguez is 19 years old and a very rare talent. I was impressed with Santana in the playoffs when he farted all over the Yanks. Perhaps there is no way they deal Santana but if they don't throw some top names in the mix then its a bad deal for us. Don't forget (like so many others do) we are talking about one of the premier hitters in the MLB. The Angles are loaded with young talent and could afford to move some while not losing there team.

There is one HR threat that I know will be a free agent

If there was any way for Sox to acquire Derrek Lee this next offseason, it would make my day instantly. Sorry if I posted this in another thread. Im just gonna be lobbying this season in hopes of Boston acquiring the 6'-5" power slugging 1st baseman.

Its insurance in case Manny is traded, or even a hell of a bonus with Manny still in the lineup.

3. Ortiz

4. Ramirez

5. Lee
