Just because there is no cap doesn't mean there is no budget. The Red Sox have very high revenues, but they don't have a money tree. A $20 million a year contract absolutely keeps you from getting other players you'd like.

That said, Manny's contract might be high, but I'm sick of reading people talk about it like its the worst in baseball. He makes more than he would get as a free agent, but he produces like a top player in baseball. Most teams have contracts that hurt more than Mannys. How about Jim Thome in Philly last year, Tom Glavine and Carlos Beltran for the Mets, half the yankee roster(Bernie, Jeter, Giambi, Pavano, Jorge, Wright), Pat Burrel for philly, J.D. Drew for LA, Ordonez and Pudge on the Tigers. And thats probably only half the players that are more overpaid than Manny. At least our overpaid guy produces.

I agree with you there. He's not the most overpaid player in baseball, not by a long shot.

My problem with Manny Ramirez (and I think I'm the only person on this site who seems to have a problem with him) is that he just doesn't care. He doesn't run out ground balls, he doesn't play good defense.... and he makes these demands despite the fact that he's UNDER CONTRACT with the Red Sox. He KNEW (or should have known) what the media was like in Boston. The $20 million he makes this year can buy him all the privacy he wants.

Manny Ramirez is a tremendous hitter and having him coupled with David Ortiz as the best 1-2 punch in baseball is certainly something us Red Sox take for granted. I have no doubts that he'll produce as long as he's in the lineup, but like I've said 100,000 times on this board, the dude makes $20 million a year, the least he can do is give his full effort.

How much did the Yanks end up paying for Pavano and Wright ?

Pavano- 4 years/$40 million

Wright- 3 years/$21 million (The X factor that works out for NY is that they can void his 3rd year. That being if in the first 2 years, he goes on a combined 75 days on the DL. Which is very likely)

I hear you, and I agree that Manny can annoy the crap out of us. That said, he's uber-consistent with his offensive performance, and he does it better than 99% of the people who have ever played the game professionally. As long as Manny mashes, the antics, while not what I'd prefer to see, are acceptable.

This brings a question to my mind. Are there rules about player agreement for trips to the DL? Obviously, it is in the Yankee's interest to send Wright to the DL as often as possible in order to take advantage of their void option. Is it possible for the team doctor to say he needs to go on the DL while he says he feels fine to pitch? I'm sure there is something in the CBA about this, but I don't know the answer.

I don't think thats possible. The players union is way to strong in MLB to let something like that slide. If a players not hurt, and says hes healthy, you can't just put him on the DL, especially if there is a clause in his contract that lets it be void if he goes on the DL.

in a case like that wright could go to an arbitrator if he believes he is healthy but the yankees do not for the reason of trying to void the contract.

Jaret Wright: signed 3-year deal worth 21M (2-years 14M guaranteed) on 12/29/04- he will make 7M in every year: 2005, 2006 and 2007- + the contract can be voided by the team after the 2006 season in the event of a serious shoulder injury (specifically the right rotator cuff) that causes him to be on the DL for 75+ days combined over the first two years- + if the deal is voided by the team, he receives a 4M buyout- + Wright has the right to void the deal after 2006 if he does not sustain a shoulder injury that causes him to be on the DL for 75+ days over the first two years- + if Wright chooses to void the deal he would become a Free Agent, but he would not receive a buyout Agents: Reich, Katz and Craig Landis Service Time: 6.169

Riverside,

My point was that the Yankees cannot put Jaret Wright on the DL to void his contract if he is not hurt. Someone asked if that was possible. I know the clause is in the contract that if he is actually hurt and goes on the DL for more than 75 days they can void the final year.
