  1. If we did that, and add the #2 in a trade, I'd bet that we are the AL favorite, but approximately tied with TO and NY..
  2. That's something some posters fail to acknowledge. We won't get everyone on their wish list. It's a 0-sum game. What we would've spent on Alonso is money we cannot spend elsewhere. And then when we don't wind up signing Alonso, Bichette, and Bregman, it will be because JH is evil.
  3. Just a random number to lock posters in. My theory here is that some posters aren't concerned as much about the number as they are about the RS not signing their favorite players. So, if the number is $260M, 4% higher than last year, the posters can't complain that they signed a good glove like Kim + a good fit like Okamoto.
  4. There is a real good chance that, in three years, Alonso and/or Bregman are the new Yoshida. The same fans will be retroactively criticizing the deal, and calling JH cheap if he doesn't commit another $150M to yet another DH in waiting.
  5. I hadn't thought about that until reading MLBR this morning, plus your post. They aren't huge players, but three pretty good players. And we've heard nothing about them. Either Okamoto or Imai would fit very well.
  6. I did it for Bichette. With Marte & Bregman, the OPS would be .770. If we didn't add a 2B, and added Alonso & Bregman, it would be only .763. Upgrading 2B probably provides the single largest possible OPS upgrade. Just for background purposes, our three weakest sOPS+: 1B 84 (presumably rectified by Casas) Catcher 87 2B 97 These are NOT park-adjusted, but all other positions we are above 100. SS is our lowest above-grade with a 103, but that doesn't count Story's remarkable 30/1 SB/CS. All other positions were 115 or higher.
  7. I meant to say 'hitters', since that seems to be the main complaint.
  8. No one in the known universe spends more time criticizing "their team" than you do.
  9. Here are the top multi-year contracts from MLBR's 2024-25 FA contest
  10. That's what part of this is. "In your opinion". Same as with many other posters. If JH spends, but doesn't sign the players that a given poster prefers, that poster will call JH 'cheap'. There are at least two posters that want 35-HR hitters. I want a good #2/future #1. Just for fun, is there a payroll number that posters will be happy with? Could we say anything north of $260M is a good number, regardless of how it is spent?
  11. A lot of those are bad contracts. Here are the top multi-year contracts from MLBR's 2024-25 FA contest. LMK which ones you want: Soto Adames Santander Teoscar Hernandez Christian Walker Profar Tyler O'Neill Joc Peterson 8 contracts. Soto is too early to tell. Adames is good. The other 6 contracts are awful. The Shiny Object Syndrome is a fantasy baseball project.
  12. According to FG, that's an OPS of .755. That's ten points higher than last year. I can't make you accept the numbers. I can only tell you what they are. Past that, adding the #2 FA and a guy like Gray, and thinking that is 'ugly', is why RS are the most entitled in BB.
  13. Or, just like the Mets, we thought Alonso was overrated. And like the other 28 teams, thought Philly overpaid.
  14. That's not at all unreasonable. I would've paid $26M for Alonso rather than say $20M for Okamoto. But at this point, it looks like Okamoto is half of what Alonso is. Okamoto might also be a 4-year signing, instead of 5. And Okamoto can back up 3rd. I'll gladly pay a premium for proven over unproven, but there is always a number where that no longer makes sense.
  15. The fans of 29 different teams think their owners are cheap and they need a new owner. The reaction of Mets' fan when they didn't re-sign Alonso was hysterical. You'd swear they were talking about Nutting rather than Cohen.
  16. In regard to the #2, some of that relies on other teams to trade us a #2. My guess right now is we are talking to several teams about Duran+ in exchange for a #2. And that those teams are likewise talking to other teams. IRT to late scoring, we were #10 in OPS in the final 28 days per BR. And that was without Mayer & Casas, and largely without Abreu. And your comments still largely revolve around the fact that the RS didn't sign the two guys that YOU prefer.
  17. What I see is that writers and websites are referencing more obscure trade proposals and signings. Just look at the ones posted on Talksox: Arraez Devin Williams The Brewer trade Seager Those are fantasy baseball level ideas, but they find their way into print.
  18. That only matters if you still think there is a deadline that has already passed. And that's really the difference. You like players with high HR totals. Since two of those guys have already signed, you look at the glass as half-empty. I prefer more well-rounded players, and pitching. Since those guys are still available, I see the glass as half-full.
  19. TBH, Cashman has done a decent job ever since he took my advice and started keeping the prospects. Boone is difficult to defend by anyone.
  20. Tucker to the Mets. Bellinger to the NYY. Bichette I still have for the BJs even though they'd fly past the $304M barrier. Bregman to Detroit, but absolutely no conviction. The three SPs I'd pass on. I still like Ranger Suarez.
  21. Not crazy about the fact that Donovan is a lefty. Contreras would depend on Casas' health. Not a big fan of Suarez. He makes sense for Seattle, but they are apparently not interested. That makes me suspicious. And his .647 in his final 225 ABs was a tiny bit worrisome.
  22. Do these things make sense to you when you re-read it, or do you type and send at the same time? I'm pretty sure I never equated Cole and Casas no matter what you think you read.
  23. There is 'on the list' and 'off the list' If we are just going by the top-50 MLBR list, my choices, in no particular order: Okamoto Kim Imai, maybe On the off-list, and these are like a roto wish-list: Green, Burns, Chandler, Alcantara, Lodolo Marte I'd also throw in Bregman on the off chance that he could be talked into a long-term, cheap AAV because he wants 6 years in Fenway to enhance his HOF credentials.
  24. Too short-sighted imo. He was once a successful RP that SF thought they could convert. I would tell him to prepare to be a high-leverage RP in the off-season. If he performs poorly in ST, he becomes a real easy cut. But someone with his velocity and past success always gets a chance. Without going into the details, there are at least three RPs on the top-50 FA list that have had bad years recently. Brad Keller ring a bell?
  25. I only assume what I see. We spent $250M last year. If we repeat that, then we have $26M left to spend. More logically, imo, if we spend to $1 below the second limit, we have $46M to spend. That's plenty of money to sign the guys I prefer.
