  1. #1. Like I've said before, we need to do more spending, but we need to eliminate NYM and LAD from the comps. Something like TO should be our target.
  2. #6 out of 30 is not middle-of-the-pack.
  3. Mayer will definitely be at one of those two positions, so we only need one. Past that, I agree that we don't need to settle. If we need a 2B/3B, go out and get one.
  4. #4 according to Forbes, but it is not quite that simple. Also according to Forbes, the NYMs lost $268M last year, the NYY lost $57M, the LAD made $11M, and Philly made $9M. There are from Forbes, so I won't debate the accuracy. But teams are allowed to make money on their investments.
  5. But that's different. The SDP signed Bogaerts to a $280M ($35M*8) deal disguised as an 11-year deal to reduce the AAV. He won't be around 11 years from now. Telling you I will pay you $105,000 next year for your $100,000 current year salary is just a funding mechanism.
  6. I've often felt the same way. I've often joined companies where people didn't know what they were doing, or maybe be uninterested in improving the processes. It made it easy for me to clean things up, and make my job much, much easier. Some felt like part-time jobs after a while. Back on target, the deferrals have an implied rate of return of maybe ~ 4.5%. For a lot of players, I think it is an easy conversation for the agent to tell the player to think of the deferrals as the fixed income part of his portfolio.
  7. No, not if you add stipulations older pitchers frequently violate pitch count recommendations to one side an older pitchers frequently violate pitch count recommendations It is akin to me making a claim that I am healthier than you because you sprain your ankle more often. But the only reason for that is that you run and I don't.
  8. I use to go to Houston. Even the hint of ice would result in a 72-car pileup.
  9. But the player is effectively getting less. If I am going to pay you $200,000 in salary, but not pay you for one year, and the rate of return is 4%, then I am really only paying you $192,000.
  10. So, according to your logic, Skenes is like a #6/7 because he occasionally pitches like a #6/7?
  11. Not taking a position on this yet, but what you quoted is not the same as being more injury-prone.
  12. You also thought that Lester was a #5 with the RS.
  13. Well, sure, if you are going to insist on feeding the entire family.
  14. This is not directed at you or anyone else. But we have a 4.7 bWAR CF now that some would like to move. Duran had a career -0.8 bWAR at that time. I cannot imagine the reaction Duran would've gotten.
  15. IMHO, they should keep up with player inflation. You can shade it on both sides, depending on your assessment of your chances, but if you spent $200M 10 years ago, your hypothetical spending should be maybe $200M * (1.04^10), or $296M.
  16. It always depends on how we address the IF hole, and how we spend the money. We likely won't know for a while how this will pan out. A lot of fans want to contenders every year. I agree. But you can't do that if you overpay too often. Just for fun: 2019 LAD $210M 2026 $572M including CBT 2021 Phillies $209M 2026 $363M 2021 NYM $207M 2026 $420M You either have to be careful, or you're going to have hope for an owner with unlimited spending capacity.
  17. Awww dude, another great word I haven't heard in a long time. One of my goals is going to be to enhance Fred's vocabulary.
  18. Or, you won't be able to tell until his contract is over. According to back-of-the-envelop calculus, Bregman was worth $125M/5. If that model holds up, then it was right to not sign him. Whether Breslow was sputtering, aloof, perfectly coherent or anything else, won't matter.
  19. Just a couple of things. I think every FO has a combination of scouting and models, and that's probably true of every sport. My personal, and untested, theory is that if you get rid of long-term free agents you have signed, halfway through the contract, you will almost always be right.
  20. You don't usually do that without a better sub or an older guy. Casas was 23 and Devers 26.
  21. I thought that was a great get. A top 30-40 prospect. He had a 2.9 bWAR with LA the previous season. He stepped in with a 2.2 in 201 ABs with us. Played a good LF. He looked like a 5-tool with 4 years left. After his first year, I'd have extended him for sure.
  22. Fred forgets quickly, but the purpose of the post was to use the word 'cheap'. So his to-do list is done.
  23. Fair enough. The way I see it, we have 12 automatics, plus Casas (IL), and either Eaton or Sogard. Perhaps it would be more accurate to say, "MY" preferred roster is one player away. Just imho, we are currently a playoff team, with 1st place aspirations. With the addition of someone like Paredes, particularly if we can keep Duran, then we are a 1st place team with aspirations of the WS.
  24. And my position is that they have at least one more big move left. But I am not going to sign every day to repeat that assertion. But you be you.
  25. He might be the most active GM in the game right now.
