    If such a wager were available, I'd make a modest wager that Duran's OPS v righties the rest of the season, would be above league average.

    While I do think we need another bat, a Yoshi/Romy platoon and a Duran/JJ platoon, while not elegant, has a chance of success.

    Those relief performances by Weissert, Watson and Moran are appreciated. We had the lead, but we still needed to hold it. Not using Chapman, Whitlock, Slaten and Guerrero make them available for 2 of the 3 games in some sort of mix and match setup.

    I looked at that, but his bat speed is up from last year. My suspicion is that his lower hard hit percentile is related to swinging at too many pitches that he can't make hard contact with. Same with Story. You cannot make hard contact with pitches low & outside, or eye-high.

    That's why I go to movies. Clint Eastwood asks 4 gunmen whether or not they are going to apologize to his mule, then pulls aside his pancho to show he's serious. Pure escapism.

    I will concede some of that. Auditors use to spend a lot more time looking at accounts and transaction to see whether or not they made intuitive sense. Before I retired, I'd get a 120-page checklist from the auditors, and then the engagement would be over. My favorite Q was 'Are you aware of any fraud'. I really felt like answering 'yeah, the dude next door just embezzled $100M. Why do you ask?'.

    That can be said about every player that ever played.

    I've heard that about half our players this year. I'll admit that Duran is a special case, but do you need a list of all the players that we needed to DFA this year? That said, I'd have no problem with a straight platoon of Duran/JJ until the TDL.

    Yup. The .548 comes with a .192 BABIP. If you believe in reverting to historical numbers, then he should produce better numbers in the future.

    Just for fun, if we could sustain our July offensive numbers, would you trade for some of these players?

    Perhaps a better question might be, 'is the current offense sustainable?'. Over the past 28 days, we are 9th in OPS. The BABIP is actually slightly below MLB average, so nothing unusual there. If we have a #9 offense, we should be competitive.

    Along time ago, when Boggs was in one of his rare slumps, a friend of mine, who understood real BB, said it was because he wasn't making pitchers afraid to pitch to him. A pitcher always has to have some fear that you will go deep. Similar, but different, with Duran. The pitcher has to become afraid that Duran will take a walk and steal 2nd. Otherwise, they will never give him a pitch to drive.

    For all the concern last year about the offense, we lost to the EE because Bello and Early aren't really a playoff rotation #2/3. And a key error and baserunning mistake. But this is a rotation capable of making serious noise.

    I need to re-watch it. The director had some well-known actors give like a narrative for 20 seconds. It was genius. And some of the lessons in the book have been around forever.

    Against lefties, we can play Yoshida in LF and DH Romy. Not ideal, but it can be done. And it won't be obvious to anyone, but Duran's production has inched up marginally. 7 walks in 12 games. Even overall, if his BABIP was at his career levels, then his OPS would be as well.

    That's what I hated about the Gonzo trade. We already had a real good 1B in Youkilis. Don't fix what ain't broke.

    I'd like to think I am well-read, but I cannot read books of fiction, knowing that none of the stuff I am reading actually happened. I blame some of that on what was crammed down our throats as kids. Just to blame my favorite boogeyman, how someone can consider The Old Man and the Sea even a book, let alone 'great literature', is beyond me. OTOH, I went to B&N with my wife, and I had The Big Short half-finished before we left the store. The movie is highly recommended as well.

    I never understood that. I started my career with manual books, and a statistical typist was needed for financial statements. Every time something better came along, I went all-in. I can no longer keep up, but the idea that someone wouldn't use all the data available is something I have a problem processing.

    1-You old. 2-JH has been real good for us. So good that I can let a few years go by without a WSC. 3-I think JH didn't think DD was a rebuild type of GM and let him go. That makes perfect sense. No one hires the identical engineer, lawyer, or accountant for different jobs. 4-The defense being a rarity wasn't always true. In the late-70s, early 80s, we had defense and GGs everywhere. 5-Oh, and you old.

    He struck out in his first AB, so Fred would've called him a typical RS bum, and had him DFAd. Red would've said Fred was mostly right and all prospects are suspects, and would've traded him before his 2nd AB.

    Both would require substantial salary relief. I'd be asking for $100M to cover Lindor's 35-36-37 year old seasons. Adames maybe $50M. I don't think either team does it.

    With the way we're playing, if Crochet, Anthony and Story all showed up healthy, I'd ask them to wait outside.

    Happiness is when you need to go for your walk, but you keep putting it off so you can check the boxscore for the 5th time.
