  1. I hope we never need him, but he is not bad for AAA depth. And I love the transaction tree. We got him for free, traded him for Moran, and then got him back for free. Both him and Moran might qualify as the next-man-up from AAA.
  2. Walker had a 2nd half .799 last year, and benching a $20M player on OD is bad optics for a GM. I mean, they have reasons to keep him, but they won't look good if Paredes is on the bench and they are short one OF.
  3. Everyone probably assumes Paredes is on the block. I'd make a non-insignificant wager he is on the bench on OD. They tried Altuve in LF and didn't like the results. I believe that Altuve had one start in LF in Aug/Sept, and 49 starts at 2B in that time frame. Barring injuries, Pena and Correa are automatic starters at SS & 3B.
  4. Err, you could've told me that before I drafted Wheeler. And I assume that Middleton might be hesitant about laying out an unlimited budget, and they have more faith in Painter. But it is worrisome that DD had little interest in locking him in.
  5. I think we could get more for Bello. But if we could reach an understanding on an extension, ala Crochet, it would be hard to find a better fit that Hoerner.
  6. It's crazy what happens in places where it doesn't usually snow. I have a friend from Harrisburg who said they wouldn't even pay attention to 12 inches of snow. But entire highways in Houston would shut down over 1-2 inches of snow.
  7. These trades still happen. SD traded Soto and Houston traded Tucker. Mil traded Burnes. It's unusual, but it happens. It's really just an excess for a need thing.
  8. In two of the past three years, Rooker had a 2.0 and 2.3 bWAR. He had a 5.6 squeezed in between, but with a .362 BABIP. I can't tell which Rooker to expect, but I think it would be the 2023/25 version. Last year, Abreu was the better player, 5 years younger, and will be materially cheaper. Not a fan of Romero. Perhaps someone else will rate him higher. I like Bennett, but I think the Cubs will want someone ranked closer to what Shaw was ranked.
  9. My guess is that it is a bluff. The Cubs could hang on to everyone and only lose one year out of five service years with Shaw. If the Astros hang onto IP they lose half of his value. He likely won't start.
  10. If the RS wanted Suarez, there is -0- doubt in my mind that they'd have beat the Reds' offer.
  11. The first one is a big overpay. IMHO, Abreu is a better player than Rooker. On the 2nd, the Cubs will want a top-100-ish prospect.
  12. Yordan is a great hitter but too injured for my tastes.
  13. I agree with that. The Duran conversation sometimes gets too restrictive. It could be any of Abreu, Ceddanne, or imho, Duran. And we can trade any of our SPs from the #4 on down. But most importantly, once we have the 2b/3b, we control our own destiny. Whether we trade Duran or Bello for a IF, makes no difference to me. Once that happens, we would be in a position to take calls, but a better position to dictate terms.
  14. IMO, all the options are 'okay'. It just depends on the price. Too many variables. My suspicion is that the RS want to start Mayer at 3rd, so he doesn't have move for the next 6 years. If that's their plan, the Suarez doesn't fit and we move on.
  15. Bello + Masa + $18M of Masa's salary. It's not a roster fix, but the L/R is more palatable. We get better hitting, better balance, and a $15M savings to devote to a 2b/3b.
  16. That annoys me just a little bit. Sometimes it's okay to get cute, and play short-term and stuff. But this really feels like it needs a legitimate long-term solution.
  17. He seemed pretty apologetic. He apologized to both the catcher and ump immediately. He knew he was wrong, and that's important.
  18. I agree. Masa isn't really a problem-the roster is.
  19. I'd say Shaw is 3rd on my list behind Paredes and Baty. This is assuming that he will be more expensive. I like his overall resume, but his EV and bat speed are questionable. I'd do it just for fit purposes, but not keen on it.
  20. Most of the trade offers I've seen in here wanted a hefty return.
  21. It'll also depend on how many people are swimming in that pool. Every time someone acquires a 2b/3b, it's one less available, but one less buyer.
  22. Two things: Fitting all of them into the lineup is more a function of the position they play than their left-handedness. Yoshida's field position, if/when he plays, is LF. That gives us 5 guys to play 4 positions, assuming you don't want Ceddanne at 2B. If Duran could go back to 2nd, I don't think we'd have a problem. Last year, we were 24-21 against lefties. Our overall L/R splits were .746/.743, and our splits against lefty starters were a favorable .732/.779. That has to do with the structure of the team, but that's an amazing difference. S, if you ask me if I want a lefty or righty, I'm choosing righty. But if I have a choice between a good lefty, or a mediocre righty, I'm picking the lefty.
  23. That's why I added the '+' after Paredes. I have Duran at 4.7*3, or 14.1 bWAR. I have Paredes at 3.5*3. Houston has to give me about 7 WAR. Since Paredes fits better than Duran, I'll take anything over 5 WAR.
  24. Sounds reasonable. To me, it wasn't that big a deal. He's a very good player that was well-compensated. We lost some talent and gained some spending room. If it was me, I'd have made the switch. But I don't think I'd have liked it one bit.
  25. I knew that once I complimented Fred on his medical expertise, that this thread was going to go to heck. Anyone else want to agree with Fred? Let's get it over with before the whole site crashes.
