  1. Good for Refsnyder, who spent the bulk of his career bouncing back and forth between AAA and MLB for multiple organizations before Boston became the first team to give him a guaranteed contract and established him as an actual Major Leaguer. And his current one year deal in Seattle will pay him more money than he made in his entire career to date…
  2. You’re thinking large market. That 9% can be a big deal to a team like Milwaukee or Cleveland….
  3. A #2 makes no sense for Duran from the opposing team’s viewpoint. Hetting Duran is about hetting more competitive now. Teams don’t get more competitive now by dealing their top starting pitchers. It only works if it’s someone like Freddy Peralta that has one season left before free agency and whose talent is going to price him out of his current team’s budget. But do you deal Duran for one season of a pitcher?
  4. That would be dumb., for a couple reasons 1) While it should be a fixable problem, Contreras habitually crouches too close to hitters. While this leads to too many catcher interference calls, the real issue is safety. A couple seasons ago, this poor habit lead to Contreras’ left arm being struck by the swing of JD Martínez, resulting in a broken arm. 2) Last year, St. Louis carried 3 catchers for the bulk of the season (Ivan Herrera, Pedro Pages, Yohel Pozo), all of whom were better defensively than Contreras. They did use Herrera at DH a lot, but they would be better off simply getting a better DH and letting Herrera get back behind the plate more often. Why Contreras was not a candidate for DH is another level of mystery here…
  5. And he made less money…
  6. No more Cardinals. That team went 78-84 last year and won’t get better by moving it East piece-by-piece. Houston has they’re not moving Paredes. Even if thats just posturing, it means they want too much. Vientos for Casas actually makes sense for both teams. A swap of two hitters with good seasons in the past, both roughly the same age (Vientos is 35 days older), both lousy fielders, both are redundant on their current team but plays a position the other’s team lost to free agency, Casas had a secretary named Vientos…
  7. Career .946 OPS vs Fried! (In all of 8 Career PA)
  8. Well, it’s not that they couldn’t trade Casas ladt year; it’s that they couldn’t trade him when they tried to attach Yoshida and his contract. That’s not the same thing. Sure he isn’t going to get you a “#2 starter” but Casas’ combination of demonstrated skills and very small financial commitment will appeal to some teams. If Michael Chavis and Nick Yorke can be dealt for MLB pitchers, certainly the Sox can get something for Casas. Whether or not it’s something useful remains to be seen…
  9. I prefer a Yoshida/Romy DH platoon. DH is the one position unimpacted defensively by platooning….
  10. Most likely play 1b. When Casas comes back, there is a logjam, but injuries might sort it all out before then…
  11. Abreu makes for a much, much better defensive OF and the Sox think he is ready to take big steps forward. Obviously the Sox have at least one trade left. And have yet to sign a single free agent except Alex Gamboa, whom no one has ever heard of. They still need ano the infielder and pribably some pitching. I’m not sold that they need to find the mythical #2 starter, and bulking up the bullpen might be a better idea. But they have been talking about starters in the rumors Ive been reading…
  12. And others of us have been saying for a while that the Sox are going to deal a couple of those 14 starting pitchers on the 40 man. They actually almost had to. Id think unless the Sox cannot afford to give up any more pitching (which I doubt), tjis should push them deeper after Marte and take them out of the Bregman market…
  13. Tread water? He will play 1b. Most plate appearances for the Sox last year went to Abraham Toro and Romy Gonzalez…
  14. Contreras is a good get. He’s top 5 or 6 in just about every offensive metric among first basemen. See? We don’t need Alonso…
  15. You get what you pay for? Did the Sox get what they paid for from Price? Or Crawford? Or Hanley? Or Story? Or Yoshida? Or Fat Pablo? I could go on. None of them were Dumpster Dives. Why does the focus need to be on big name free agents, whom history has shown repeatedly drag you down more often than build you up. Why this obsession with spending? The Sox best moves lately have been trades and promotions. And despite that those have been working, you think the Sox should abandon that strategy?
  16. Here is the point, and an oft-repeated one. Free agency isn’t a fine for short contracts to fill temporary needs. But it gets problematic with the long term contracts fans want. 3 of the 4 players you named signed short term deals. The fourth one signed a long term deal that has been the subject of numerous complaints over the previous 3 seasons…
  17. It’s never MANDATORY to sign free agents to fill those voids. And in most cases, teams should be advised against it. The problem is fans equate spending with winning, and therefore assume teams not spending are not trying….
  18. Thats my lazy-ass mistake. But Texas reportedly was shopping him regardless. No idea if it’s true, or if he has an NTC. And he might, because players getting traded from the Rangers to any team other than the Astros do effectively take a pay cut…
  19. That track record spans over 50 years, multiple executives and 4 WS rings. The reality is free agency is a bad way to build a team. It’s mostly nothing but PR Fluff…
  20. That’s not really much more. I doubt Chris Young would look at Castro and say “the marginal outfielder is a good start, but can I get some AAAA pitchers as well?” Arguably Drohan and Uberstine hinder a deal as neither is very good or has much potential but both require a 40 man roster spot. I will say, Eovaldi’s contract structure on B-R looks like it was put together with a trade before 2026?in mind. Salary goes up from like $2mill in 2025 to $24mil in ‘26. …
  21. I will confirm for you - he is definitely taking his time…
  22. Jim? Jim Hendry? Is that really you? I didn’t know the former Cubs’ General Manager and his “give me 8 bats and we’ll sort out the positions later” attitude posted on this site…
  23. Isn’t that kind of how all these budget crunch problems started? The Sox didn’t spend more because DD told them to; they spent more because Henry allowed DD to…
  24. BTV gives him the same surplus value ($2..4mill) as Allan Castro. I make that trade yesterday, and I don’t even think they need more starting pitching. (In fact I think they need to trade a couple.)…
  25. Reportedly being shopped by Texas. 2 yrs $53mill left on his deal…
