  1. It helps. But don’t denigrate defense. While all four of the top offenses by WAR(ignoring the tie for 4th) made the pistseason, two of the top four by DRS played in the World Series no magic formula
  2. The New York Mets tied for fourth in offensive fWAR and missed the postseason. There is no magic formula…
  3. … and having the better hitters struggle. While Rafaela has probably exceeded expectations, Duran and Anthony have not. And Duran was the best hitter on a playoff team last year. Anthony actually has shown reasons to expect improvement. Duran? Not so much. And then there’s Story.
  4. How do we know he isn’t a leader? I mean, besides the godawful haircut…
  5. To be fair to Paredes, he’s only played 96 innings at 3b. Hard to save an average number of defensive runs in a below average number of inniings…
  6. Does Contreras? He certainly brings the veteran part..
  7. And they never replaced their German ballerina…
  8. Anthony threw well enough last year. This year, StatCast has his arm value in the 71st percentile…
  9. Who wanted him this past off-season? Other than San Diego, was there any interest? And what did San Diego have to offer other than a teenage catcher with back problems?
  10. So your point is Duran fouled off two cutters, therefore the only conclusion is the Sox never practice bunting? Duran might not be a very good bunter (I have no idea if he is or isn’t), but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t practice it or never has. He’s not hitting for s*** this year. Can we assume he isn’t practicing that, too? But every time some player fails to lay down a bunt, it’s always “the Sox never practice bunting! Bad fundamentals!” And no one ever says “bunting isn’t this high percentage play hitters can pull off nearly every time.” If the Sox truly never practice bunting, than maybe Cora should stop asking them to bunt…
  11. … unless you think the team is going nowhere anyway…
  12. There are only so many roster spots, but also only so many starters. Someone had to go on the bench. Do you think Josh Bell was going to sign on to be a bench bat? Contreras was a good addition. So far, Durbin has done very little. If he can get it going, that can be a big deal. But he has shown very little actual MLB power. The Sox need Duran to turn his season around and Story to rise from the ashes again. The young bats are also all off to slow starts. Some will turn it around; some might just have a bad year.
  13. They may bounce back, but they also cannot score, hence the run differential. I watched them get shut down last night by Colin Rea. How would folks here respond to the Red Sox getting shut down by Colin Rea?
  14. The “bad roster construction” commentary strikes me as really, really looking for flaws. ”Our bench is too good and Cora can’t figure out who to start” sounds like a good problem to have. I’d rather have the dilemma of benching either Yoshida or Duran over the dilemma of having to start Nate Eaton or Allen Castro everyday out of pure necessity. Theyre not hitting. True. But teams wuth definitively lesser rosters are. Why? No idea why the Twins are suddenly an offensive powerhouse. Or why the Nationals lead MLB in runs scored. Are their lineups really that good?
  15. None of their SPs are doing well. But explain why Philly has a small sample size but Boston doesn’t. And comments about how bad the Sox look will receive a reply “how good do you think Philly has looked while running up the league worst run differential?”
  16. Metrics do dictate against sacrifice bunting in most cases, and they should. There are times when metrics favor the sac bunt, however, so it’s not taboo. But bunting isn’t easy especially against MLB pitching. I watched Dansby Swanson pop up two bunts in the tenth inning on Sunday, not because he didn’t know what he was doing but because Craig Kimbrel (yes, he is still alive) was on to him and threw nothing but high fastballs. Know how hard it is to bunt a high Major league fastball? That’s not something you can work on in high school.
  17. The Fenway Franks are now made with a lower grade of space age polymers…
  18. His StatCast last year was actually very impressive, which was why I thought Boston could use him. Granted, it’s better from the left side…
  19. And yet he is a career starter that took on a bench role. If your biggest problem with this team is they spent too much money on a Gold Glove winning infielder that can play all 8 positions and put him on the bench, maybe “cheapskate” shouldn’t be your primary accusation. Again, it’s a one year deal for $6.25 mill. IKF is hardly the biggest issue, and it wasn’t a choice between him and Pete Alonso…
  20. Oddly, those two are at the forefront of the surprising start by the Twins. But - and this is coming from a guy who (in)actively campaigned for Josh Bell last July - I cannot see these two being an adequate response to cheapskate allegations. Especially if the Sox only brought in one of them…
  21. But the only year that matters is this one. Philly’s run differential is (-42) - worst in MLB. Maybe they do miss Ranger Suarez…
  22. Josh Bell or Victor Caratini. But not both…
  23. I think the hope was Durbin could be a rising star. I think they liked his glove and his Fenway swing. IKF was brought in to fill a bench role. Unlikely they would have brought in Durbin for that type of role…
