The Mariners are still in the AL West picture, but getting farther away from even the third Wild Card. Still, I think they add bats using sources besides the young pitching because that young pitching makes them contenders for a few years in the immediate future. They can find other trade chips to get some bats. And also hope JRod breaks out of his season-long slump sometime soon…

I think we might find by next year, one or more of Houck, Crawford or Bello (yes, Bello) might step up and come closer to filling that void than people realize. I’m still very high on that trio…

I will never know how anyone sees Bleis. If I had Breslow’s job, I’d hold off another year and see if he can bounce back. He’s a former Top 100 prospect across three lists as recently as last year, so some potential might exist. But I could see other teams preferring Bleis over Lugo, Kavadas, Jordan, Sandlin, Meidroth, Espino and possibly even Fitts…

He could be. He’s obviously not the most valuable gem in the system, and has earned his removal from three top 100 lists since the beginning of last year. But I still think a rival GM would prefer a long term project like Bleis over a AAA LHH DH/1b type like Kavadas who was left in the minors by his current organization in favor of journeyman Dom Smith. Kavadas might even be dealt, but as the returns get bigger, more GMs would ask for Bleis over Kavadas, Sandlin, Jordan, and Lugo. The Sox, OTOH, might prefer to hold Bleis, hoping a bounce back thrusts him back into the upper echelon of all prospects. Basically, they might not want to sell him low right now…

The sellers at this point appear to be the bottom two teams in every division, except the NL Central, where Chicago and Cincy could go either way. Also Texas should be selling. And in a really odd recommendation, the first place Mariners should seriously consider it. They won’t, of course. But they’ve already squandered their big lead and just cannot score runs ever. And their superstar who was having a bad year is not out. Clearly not their year…
