.728 vs .747 seems like an inconsequential difference. There’s no clear quantification,” with OPS but that comes down to something in the neighborhood of 1 single per 100 at bats…

At least you read my rhetoric. Most of it, anyway. (And I don’t blame you there; it’s not all worth reading.) But the one caveat I have always made is free agency is usually a good place for relievers, especially when compared to starters. Because at least relievers often take much shorter deals and for much lower AAVs. They can also impact more games in a season than a starter…

No. It’s not a fact. It’s a myth that’s piled on, like the Bermuda Triangle. It happened twice. DD and Bloom. And no one disputes Bloom deserved it.

And I’m saying he’s the only CBO where the.blame gets bumped up the ladder all the time. Earlier I made a statement about Betts not accepting what DD was offering. This is 100% true and doesn’t put blame on either side, yet you chimed in to make sure it was Henry and not DD. Cherington made a lot of mistakes, most notably Hanley, Pablo and Rusney. (Although I think Rusney was neglected and underutilized.). I’ve never seen anyone say “well, Henry authorized and made those payments.” It gets silly with DD. I was a Bloom fan for a few years, but I’ve openly criticized him multiple times, starting with the Betts trade. But no DD fan seems to ever even permit others to criticize DD without immediately chiming in to his defense. Did DD do some good? Absolutely. But he also did some bad, and it doesn’t make you less of a fan to acknowledge that. It might even make you more of one…

Oh my God. You’ve become one of them. Those Who Never Speak Ill of Dombrowski. To any degree. It’s one thing to be an overall fan of him or the job he did. But DD is human. I hear he even bleeds red. He does make mistakes. It’s ok to acknowledge them. I’m sure DD does…

Curious about why Dubon (5.7 bWAR) and Beeks (0.9 bWAR) are better than Moncada (14.3 bWAR) and Kopech (5.9 bWAR)…

It’s arguable (and many believe true) that DD’s spending was the reason Henry tightened the purse strings. Spending $240mill for a World Series championship team is one thing, but spending $240mill for an 84-78 team that misses the postseason by a dozen games won’t help you keep your job…

If you want to argue DD got good or better value for the prospects he gave up, that’s one thing. But the notion that no one he gave up has worked out is a complete fallacy. Michael Kopech is currently closing for the Dodgers in the postseason. Santiago Espinal was an All Star. Mauricio Dubon and Jalen Beeks have both carved out decent careers. Also, while not prospects, certainly Travis Shaw and Wade Miley both went on to far more successful careers than the players acquired for them (Tyler Thornburg and Carson Smith), who were both complete flops. Yet, like the Chris Sale trade, both deals made sense at the time…

Would Xander have signed a longer deal? As he was one year from free agency at the time, I’m surprised he signed one at all, let alone a below-market-value one

We nitpick moves from every CBO or GM. So do you. Why is Dombrowski supposed to be exempt?

2019 was the beginning of his downfall. He let Kimbrel and Kelly walk and (as far as anyone can tell) replaced them with Colten Brewer. His pitching staff was expensive and oft-injured. And Mookie was unwilling to extend for what DD was offering…

This Phillies team should be dominant on paper. All DD (or any CBO) can do is make them look good on paper.

I’m all for fairness, although a salary cap with or without floor won’t establish it in MLB. But I also don’t expect the Sox to be able to maintain the spending pace those clubs established. And if the Sox have to do things on a lower payroll, I understand that and have seen it work even for prolonged stretches (Tampa, Milwaukee, Cleveland). Because what I haven’t seen it it work well for Boston, and it isn’t just because they “sign the wrong players”; it’s because most worthy players get contracts longer than Father Time recommends…
