  1. For us stat loving geeks, our OF defense ranks first in DRS at +39 and first in UZR/150 at +9.1. Yes, I realize that a lot of that is Betts, but our OF defense is the best in baseball.
  2. It's a one game, playoff play in game.
  3. It has been seen over and over and over again that giving out a large contract to a relief pitcher will likely come back to bite you. That hasn't stopped teams from doing it yet.
  4. I really thought Price would have an ace like season this year, so much so that I didn't think we needed Sale. Turns out I was very wrong on that. I am hoping that Price will be able to return at some point this season, and maybe pitch out of the bullpen if nothing else. It's sounding less and less likely though, as he has still not resumed throwing.
  5. Yeah, the sexy signings will put fans in the seats, supposedly.
  6. Absolutely. But in my perfect world, you have such a strong farm system that you field the team with mostly home grown players, trade sparingly to fill in some of the holes, then the need for those superstar players is lessened. You can get by with the Mike Napolis and the Rick Porcellos of the world. I realize that there are times when a team will have to give out a large contract. That should be the exception, not the norm. And for me, I'd try to stay in the 5-6 year range with the big contracts. I just think a 10 year deal is insane.
  7. Holt should not be leading off, but it was one game, and it turned out okay. I know that the fact that it turned out okay does not make the decision the right decision, but again, it was only one game. I think that Max has a valid point about not disrupting the rest of the line up, or at least the top guys. That also gave him the L-R-L-R thingy that he likes.
  8. My bad. I was trying to give you a specific example. Scratch that. Put a good hitter in the line up over a hot hitter. Put a good hitter in the line up over a 'clutch' hitter. In other words, don't be ruled by small sample sized data.
  9. How do you know that Hanley is not focused?
  10. I agree. I said in the game thread that I really didn't like Holt batting lead off, but keeping the other hitters in the same spot is a valid point. And as we saw, it worked out.
  11. In terms of determining how a player is going to do going forward, projections trump season to date performance at any point in the season, and they certainly trump a small one week sample. This is the same reason why rearranging a batting order based on who is hot is not the best thing to do. Unless there is an injury or a player is in a prolonged slump and needs a day or two to clear his head, you put your best hitter in the line up over the hot hitter. FTR, I have stated myself to 'ride the hot hand', but a team is really better off riding the better hitter.
  12. It's not a hypothetical case. Basically, you bat your good hitter over your hot hitter.
  13. Tough series coming up with some tough opposing pitching. Our offense needs to bring its A game. Let's do this! WIN!!!
  14. Porcello started off the season somewhat poorly, but he has been much better as of late. His first half ERA was 4.75. His second half ERA is 3.77. One of the reasons for the turnaround is the change in BABIP. His first half BABIP was .346 compared to a second half of .262. His K/W ratio remains very strong. As you pointed out, he almost always gives us 6 innings, which is valuable in and of itself. To date this season, he has been worth $17.3 mil. Maybe most importantly, he pitches well against the Yankees. I am encouraged by what I see.
  15. You lost me right there.
  16. I was against the contract, but I figured he would be good for 4 years or so. IMO, he was about as sure a bet as you can get for a 30+ year old pitcher.
  17. I realize that. But if you stick to smaller contracts, or more specifically shorter term contracts, then the risk is more manageable should the player completely bomb.
  18. Never, ever sign a reliever for that kind of contract.
  19. LOL All is forgiven and forgotten today with a series win. What's odd is I (and probably most people) figured we would win Sale's start and would likely be beat by Gray.
  20. All other things being fairly equal, it would be fine to go with the 'hot hand'. However, if you have a guy like Mookie in an 0 for 30 slump versus someone like Holt who is 15 for his last 30, it would be a mistake, IMO, to go with Holt. That might be an extreme case, but the point is, you go with the better hitter over the 'hot' but weaker hitter.
  21. I liked the call too. This is a big game. Don't take any chances when Kimbrel is available.
  22. Fellow catch Salty was impressed with his baserunning. LOL
  23. Gray is annoyingly slow between pitches. I think the announcers said an average of 28.2 seconds between pitches.
