  1. I am surprised that nobody mentioned the line up mistake that Farrell made in Friday night's game. Maybe I just missed it. Hanley replaced Moreland at 1Bin the top of the 9th when Moreland became the pitcher. Hanley should have batted in Young's spot in the bottom of the 9th. Oddly, Showalter did not catch this mistake either.
  2. I know that you are a supporter of avoiding large contracts. That's why I said that you should know better than most that they are, by and large, not a good idea. For the most part, I don't consider a 4 year deal to be a large contract. I loved the Porcello extension and I liked the Hanley signing. I also realize that a team is going to have to sign some players to 5+ year deals. It's a necessary evil. However, the 7-8 year range would be my limit.
  3. I agree about the bullpen and Farrell's management of it Moon. I have questioned some of Farrell's bullpen decisions, mainly not bringing Kimbrel into the game in the 8th inning in some of those high leverage spots. But even then, I can understand his reasoning. Not that I necessarily agree with it, but I understand it.
  4. You are right that ERod does not fare well the 1st and 2nd innings. He pitches well in the 3rd, but then does not pitch well in the 4th. Here are his ERAs and OPS against by inning, not including today: 1st - 4.24 / .757 2nd - 6.35 / .872 3rd - 2.12 / .564 4th - 5.29 / .766
  5. Isn't this the typical MO of pitchers though, to establish the fast ball? Some pitchers throw pretty much all fastballs the first time through the order. That said, if it's not working, then the coaches really should work on a different game plan with him. One of the things I loved about Varitek is that he was so good at changing the game plan mid stream if the current plan was not working.
  6. I hate playing them. It seems like they always beat us.
  7. Stay safe SoxHop. I hope you and your family and friends got through it okay.
  8. It's an interesting idea for sure. I'm just not sure how well it would work out logistically. I also think it somewhat limits the bullpen flexibility. I will have to think about this some more.
  9. Well obviously. You certainly wouldn't consider signing Hanley to a 10 year deal. My point is, long term deals almost always come back to bite you, no matter how much of a 'sure bet' it seems like. You know this better than most. We have experienced it over and over, but yet when the opportunity presents itself for next long term deal, most fans want to jump in head first.
  10. Three points on 3 different topics: 1. The news on JBJ's return is promising. He has progressed to a soft cast quicker than scheduled. 2. Whether Moreland returns or not might have more to do with the type of contract he is looking for rather than whether the FO wants him back or not. IMO, 1B is the only real area of need, so the Sox have the financial flexibility to more or less do what they want with 1B, not that I'm condoning a long term contract to anyone. 3. While it is important for the Sox to 'hot' in the playoffs, momentum going into the playoffs, good or bad, really amounts to nothing. The idea that a team will win a playoff series because they have momentum is another one of those great myths.
  11. There was a pretty decent article out yesterday or today (can't remember who wrote it) about the criticism that Farrell receives regarding his usage of the pen (and line up construction). The bottom line is that what Farrell does works. If Farrell is mismanaging the bullpen so badly, how are they so good? This author seems to think that Farrell's justifications for what he does are very valid, but the problem lies with his ability to articulate his line of reasoning.
  12. Maybe some minor tweaks and adding a much depth as reasonably possible, but I don't think the BP is an area of need for next year.
  13. I always get a kick out of position players pitching in relief. They usually do a pretty decent job, all things considered.
  14. Harmony is correct about a pitcher going through a line up for the 3rd time, but I think it's probably a bit unrealistic (due to roster constraints) to plan on regularly pulling a starter after 4 innings. Much would depend on the game situation.
  15. I am hopeful about Hanley as well. I am probably in the minority, but I'm a big Hanley fan.
  16. They learn, until the next enticing superstar player comes along, unfortunately. How many people here are wanting to trade for Stanton? How many people here want to give Betts a 10 year deal?
  17. I had no problem with Hanley's contract. For a hitter of his caliber coming into the 2015 season, it was not unreasonable.
  18. Taking pitchers out of the game also has a lot to do with the data these days. Playing the matchups for one, but also realizing that a reliever will often be more effective than a starter going through an order for the 3rd time.
  19. I know that I always hate when guys like Rajai get on base when they're playing against us.
  20. That's an absolute no doubter. I hate losing to the Os. Don't let it happen again team. WIN!!!
  21. That's all I've been saying.
  22. I'm glad you took on the "Magic Number" challenge. I like following it, but I'm too lazy to keep track of it myself.
  23. Farrell must be managing you.
  24. Another one of those depth type moves that might end up paying larger dividends than I would expect.
  25. I'm sure that the fact that Pom was coming off a game where he had to leave early with back spasms factored into his decision as well. The pen did its job, so all is well.
