  1. History has shown us over and over and over again that these types of deals are likely not going to work out. Even if they work out great at the front end, $30 million for 3 more years is a lot to eat at the back end. No owner wants to make a habit out of eating contracts like Pablo's.
  2. I have very much enjoyed tribute to Jerry's 30 years.
  3. Well, if we knew that this season would be Betts' floor for the entire contract, then most certainly. But of course we have no way of knowing that, and therein lies the rub with long term contracts.
  4. Of course we all see the blunders. I don't think that that necessarily equates to lack of fire though. Maybe they are trying to do too much? Maybe for some of them it's still a learning curve as to when it's a good risk to take versus not? That doesn't excuse mental lapses like forgetting how many outs there are, but again, I'm not sure that means lack of fire.
  5. I am not for publicly calling out players either. I don't think the argument in the dugout was meant to be seen, it's just one of those things that the cameras captured. I have said that it is fair to question Farrell about the blunders. The players need to be held accountable. But as you said, maybe Farrell is addressing the issues behind the scenes, as a good manager should do.
  6. I understand that. I realize that it is highly, highly unlikely to field and entire team with farm players. Making trades and signing free agents are both necessary. That said, big trades come from having the farm system to make the trades. That's not the same as handing out a huge contract. And Sale is a cost controlled player, unlike Stanton is. And as far as signing free agents, I'm looking for the Beltre, Napoli, and Moreland type deals to fill the gaps, not the superstars.
  7. Even the mighty Yankees have a budget. They are working hard to get under the tax limit so they can reset.
  8. Of course Henry cares about his budget, and certainly more than the fans do. It's his money. If he wanted to spend like a drunken fool and eat millions of dollars in bad contracts every year, what would I care, if he's willing to do it again and again? I'd think that he's stupid for doing so, but what would I care? It's not my money. I read recently that if the tax penalty is not reset, and Henry went more than $40 mil (I believe) over the tax limit, he could pay a tax rate of 92%. 92% !!! You think he doesn't care about that?
  9. As a fan, I don't want our team to be thought of as George Steinbrenner's Yankees. It is everything we always hated about the Yankees and their entitled fans, who expected Steinbrenner to get every big name FA available, then pouted when he didn't. Again, fans can expect whatever they want. Personally, I get a lot more satisfaction and joy out of seeing a good team filled by means other than signing the Bryce Harpers through FA.
  10. Good stuff Mal. You are amazing.
  11. All fair points about the Nunez' offense. I'm sure that the things you mention are contributing to his success here. That said, he is still playing over his head. He will not continue at the pace that he is at. I'm not saying that I wouldn't want him back as a utility player, but let's also not get carried away by what he's done so far in a small sample. (Not saying that you are getting carried away, just making a statement about Nunez in general.)
  12. I think the team is pretty well set for the next couple of years. Really, the only big need will be at 1B. Dombrowski could decide to shake things up a little more than that, but he doesn't have to. The rest of the moves would be tweaks for bench players or relievers, and much of that could come from in house.
  13. No doubt he is valuable to have around. I said at the time that he was signed that I liked the move because of the flexibility and depth that he provides. As a utility player, he will get plenty of at bats. That is not the same as having him as our full time shortstop, in which case I think he would be less valuable.
  14. Leading by example is definitely leadership, probably more so than merely saying things. As far as what may or may not go on in the clubhouse, I have to go with what guys like Ross have said about him.
  15. Farm system, farm system, farm system.
  16. I don't think he will opt out, but that would be the way to go if the team really wants him. At least that way, all it's costing them is money.
  17. Must be because of all those Gold Gloves he won.
  18. It's not just giving up those players either. It's also taking on that massive contract of his. If anyone were willing to do that, they'd have made a claim.
  19. Last night was a good sign for Xander. Maybe they finally figured something out, though they did finally admit that Xander's hand was still bothering him. Mookie looks so lost. I read that he has seen an increase of sliders away by 25%. That pitch is killing him. He's swinging at some of those that aren't even close. He needs to quickly make the adjustment and start laying off of that pitch.
  20. I like our chances as well as anyone's chances in the playoffs.
  21. Umps like this need to be replace with better umps. And I'm not talking about robot ones.
  22. LOL I have always said that I will quit or give up on a Red Sox season (before mathematical elimination) when Pedroia gives up on the season. It hasn't happened yet.
  23. And hopefully the offense shows up.
  24. If I'm not mistaken, you were saying that this would be the ideal time to call him up well before he was actually called up. If so, good call.
  25. Were we in first place before we got Devers and Nunez? It the answer is yes, the Encarnacion was not needed. Again, he would have been nice to have, but not at the expense of the luxury tax penalty because he was not needed.
