  1. Put him wherever he's comfortable and having success. If that's farther down in the order, so be it.
  2. I'm talking in general. In this case, the 'anecdotal evidence' supports the statistical evidence, or vice versa. That is often not the case.
  3. Intentionally walking a batter is almost never beneficial to the team that is currently pitching, the team that issues the walk. But let me restate that. Of course there are times it is going to work out. But there are also times when it doesn't. I'm talking in terms of run expectancy. Similar to the sac bunt not being a good idea except in rare cases, IBB is usually not the right call.
  4. The injury history is a fair point. His numbers might have been erratic, but overall, they were still very good. As far as not having a position for him, I am very surprised that he was so bad in left field. I was not expecting a Gold Glover, or perhaps not even average, but I thought he would be serviceable.
  5. I agree that if you're going to sign a player to a long term deal, you certainly want to sign a player who will be mostly in prime years for the contract, and that some players are surer bets than others. I remember the discussion about signing Price. Many said that they didn't care if he was an albatross in the last 2-3 years of the contract, because we would have an ace for the first part of the deal. The problem is, things don't always work like that. Even if they do, having that albatross limits the financial flexibility of the team in those latter years. I realize that Price was older when he was signed. But he did seem like a pretty safe bet for at least a few years.
  6. This is correct, but at the same time, I would like to caution against using anecdotal evidence to draw definitive conclusions.
  7. The season is far from over. I do not, by any means, think that we have the division, or even a playoff spot, wrapped up. Anything can still happen. That said, I would rather be in our shoes than in the Yankees shoes right now.
  8. If a team continues to pitch, hit, and defend poorly in the playoff series, then yes, they are likely going to lose. What I'm saying is that the hot or cold streak is just as likely to end in the next series as it is to continue. I am not too concerned about our 3 game funk yet. If the losing continues, then I will become concerned.
  9. The study actually found some evidence that coming in 'cold' could be beneficial because 'slumping' teams were the ones that were resting their starters. In other words, given the choice between playing all out to win home field advantage or having rested players, a team is probably better off having rested players.
  10. It definitely won't happen overnight. A team will try it and other teams will slowly follow suit, depending on how successful it is.
  11. He knows it happened. He also knows the rules, but had a mental lapse. That's two mental lapses that he has had recently, the other one being when he tried to pull Reed in the middle of an at bat. It is not a good look for the manager to be having these mental lapses (and bench coach not catching them). Perhaps this is the problem with our players making so many mental mistakes.
  12. I don't know for sure, but I don't think Showalter caught the mistake at the time that it happened. I think that comment was an after the fact thing, and that Showalter didn't protest the game afterwards because if was a blowout. Showalter is the type of manager who will make a pitching change or ask for a replay challenge with 2 outs in the 9th in that type of game. IMO, if he knew there was a mistake at the time it was happening, he would have said something.
  13. Yeah, I think the ump is more at fault than Farrell is. It's the ump's job to keep track of that type of thing.
  14. If I'm not mistaken, the Guardians and the Yankees play each other next. Win-win for us. That's provided that we win our games, of course.
  15. Yes, it's even worse losing Sale's starts when he pitches great.
  16. Intentionally walking a batter is almost never beneficial to the opposing team.
  17. I forgot that you were in the area as well. The footage I've seen on the news looks pretty bad in some areas. Stay safe.
  18. I have no problem with Betts batting 1st. The bottom line is that batting order makes so little difference that managers are likely better off putting a hitter where he feels comfortable rather than putting him in his prototypical spot.
  19. I was reading that the suspensions likely won't occur until after rosters expand. So, even though the Yankees will be without Sanchez and Romine, they won't be in a bind as far as who catches because they will be able to call up other catchers.
  20. Player streaks and team streaks come and go without warning.
  21. Yes, they have done studies on this. There have been all kinds of studies done to try to determine what teams are successful in the postseason. The factor that correlates strongest to postseason success is regular season success, but even that is not a great predictor. As far as the momentum thing goes, Baseball Prospectus did a study analyzing the correlation between a team's performance in the final week, the final 2 weeks, the final 3 weeks, and the final month of the regular season and a team's postseason performance. None of the correlations even reached .05. In other words, the relationship is random. There is also no carryover of momentum into the next game after a team has a big comeback win late in a game.
  22. As far as the playoffs are concerned, we are still in very good shape, despite losing 3 in a row!
  23. I realize that it's going to happen from time to time, but the 2 games against the Os shows us how important it is that we win the games that Sale starts. It really hurts us when we lose a game that we are 'expected' to win.
  24. I'm guessing that there will come a day when "tandem starters" becomes a regular type of thing.
  25. Probably. Owens would be way down on the depth chart for sure. I'm thinking we definitely need to pick up another starter for next year. At least a #3 type, if not better.
