The plan with Whitlock was obviously to make him a starter. The plan with Houck is more of a head-scratcher. We'll see some sort of resolution to this soon, I think. But of course I'm a managerial Pollyanna.

Cortes is one of those guys who looks a lot older than he is, especially with that bad mustache, which I'm sort of surprised the Yankees allow. Do they inspect mustaches on a regular basis to make sure they're still within the team guidelines?

We really have no idea what they anticipated with Sale. He did pitch 147 innings in 2019 and struck out 218. His FIP was 3.39.

Why are you talking about "any team" when the highest payroll teams are spending 5-6 times as much as the lowest payroll teams?

Yes, the opt-out can certainly be a factor in signing the player, so from that perspective they can have value. But down the road, they're not good for the team...

I will never believe they traded Betts just to reset. I think the main reason was to get something for him.

Bogey's contract situation is a reminder that opt-outs RARELY work in favor of the team.

The thing I'll always wonder is what Henry's limit was with Betts. I'm guessing it was $350 or $360, the same as he got from the Dodgers. It'll always be a mystery why those negotiations went nowhere.

If we're placing the blame for Mookie leaving on the head of baseball ops, then it should be DD who gets the blame. He was here for the prime years in which to sign Mookie to an extension. I don't see blaming DD or Bloom, myself. They're not the ones who decide how much is too much. If there's any blame it's on ownership. They did not want to go the distance.

No, Beni was traded before the 2021 season.

You're talking about DD now. DD was GM that fateful offseason of 2018-2019 when offers between the team and Mookie were exchanged.
