I would think Bloom and Cora saw eye-to-eye perfectly on that one. Bloom is the guy who acquired Arroyo. Cora is the guy who likes platoons and L-R matchups.

I understand the logic behind trying Arroyo. He's cheap and his 2021 offensive numbers were decent, especially against lefties. He had no position once we signed Story. It looks like Refsnyder may be the guy now.

I realize he doesn't look good in the outfield. They thought he could make a better transition. Bloom obviously thought Arroyo's bat had some potential, I think that's why he acquired him in the first place...

Arroyo had a .769 OPS last year in 181 PA's - and a .885 OPS against lefties. If he was doing that this year, the idea would look much better...

I think the timeline is that DD signed Sale and Bogey to their extensions after negotiations broke down with Mookie.

Sure, but none of those guys were ready in 2020, except for Houck at the very end of it. I think the "mess" comments mainly apply to the 2020 season.

No, it's not pure fiction. For various reasons, the only starting pitcher left from the 2019 rotation in the 2020 season was Eovaldi. Betts was gone and Cora was gone. Unless you really think it was Bloom's idea to trade Betts.

OK, Barnes's second extra inning appearance was on May 4. He came on in the top of the 10th with the score 4-4. Already used in the game were Davis, Strahm, Robles and Diekman. Barnes got 2 outs, then gave up a HR, single and walk. Sawamura then came in and gave up a single and HR. Danish was in Worcester at the time. It was slim pickings.

Let's face it, during the season these grades go up and down with the team's W-L record. I would give Bloom a B and Cora a B+ to this point in this season.

There's nothing new about the "all hands on deck", but Cora did try something different in 2018 with having starters pitch an inning or so in late inning relief stints between starts.

As I said, Alex Cora actually did what Nick is suggesting, in the 2018 postseason. Which led to the infamous Restgate. One could also speculate that Price and Porcello were adversely affected by it. They were never really the same. Of course it may have been decline that was in progress anyway.

How can we answer it any better than the evidence that the guys that actually run the teams think it's too taxing to be worth it? They didn't do it in the old days, either.
