  1. Jackson, man, you've been a baseball fan too long to say that.
  2. And regardless of the Wild Card race, that made me happy.
  3. That was nutty having 6-1 leads in the 9th twice and nearly blowing them. Houck may have just gotten his baptism by fire as a closer, though.
  4. AFAIK, Weber did an emergency fill-in and was promptly DFA'd. A lot of these middle-of-the-road pitchers have ups and downs that are hard to predict. Bloom's acquisitions of Pivetta and Wacha are looking pretty damn good right now.
  5. Nobody could have seen Perez's 2022 season coming. Springs has been good. Mazza hasn't done much.
  6. Let's do 2018-2021 and throw in Ottavino, who is about the same age: Diekman 197.1 IP 2.0 fWAR got 2 years $8 mill McHugh 211.0 IP 3.7 fWAR 2 years $10 mill Ottavino 224.1 IP 3.9 fWAR 1 year $4 mill McHugh and Ottavino were both more than 50% better. I just don't see what Bloom actually liked about Diekman.
  7. This tangent started with moon asking why Curry gets gushed over. LeBron is a huge star and one of the best ever to play. But I think his image has been tarnished in recent years by all his team-jumping and a pretty bad case of foot in mouth disease.
  8. Diekman had an fWAR of -0.1 last year and -0.5 this year. He might have been good once, but he's not now.
  9. I have no answers on Houck/Whitlock. It does seem pretty obvious they were making it up on the fly. It wouldn't be such an issue if guys like Barnes and Robles hadn't been so bad, of course.
  10. As I said, it was off-the-cuff. I disagree about Bird and Duncan though. Bird had the image of being Mr. Cool and Mr. Clutch, a guy you did not want to have the last shot against you. And he was the best 3 point shooter in the game for a while there.
  11. No, I'm not really saying the results would be much different. Just that it was a perplexing move.
  12. Diekman has the worst FIP and the worst WHIP on the staff. I'd say his ERA is very lucky. McHugh's FIP is half of Diekman's.
  13. Good question.
  14. To me the Diekman contract might be the most confounding move Bloom has made. Especially when it was reported we were in talks with McHugh and then McHugh ended up signing for only a million a year more.
  15. Laugh at me if you must, but I think Bloom and Cora still have some faith in Brasier, and he's been pretty good over the last month.
  16. I think Larry was universally well liked. LeBron is not.
  17. My guess, FWIW: Cora won't use Houck for a full inning tonight no matter what, but would use him again to get the last out if necessary.
  18. Yes, he gave up 2 hits, one to a .287 hitter and one to a .338 hitter. That's gonna happen. Then he struck out a .344 hitter. He wasn't going up against any chumps.
  19. Papelbon and Kimbrel had their share of heart attack saves. The only relaxing closer we've ever had was Koji in 2013, and that was a short-lived phenomenon.
  20. Houck did get the big K on Goldschmidt to end the game.
  21. Iggy made two errors in that series, one in Game 2 and one in Game 6, and both contributed to key runs. Unfortunate, but it is what it is.
  22. Plus, some say, he's a good pitcher whisperer.
  23. Plawecki? I'd have to bet against that one.
  24. Jordan was gushed over, I think, and Bird and Magic before him. What they all have in common is the "c" word-charisma. Lebron doesn't have it as much, nor did Kobe or Tim Duncan. That's a very off-the-cuff assessment!
