  1. I would have been very surprised if your response was anything different than that.
  2. According to Gammons, the Sox are also interested in hiring Pat Gillick as some sort of consultant.
  3. LOL Baseball-Reference lists him at 6'2" 203 lbs, so he was a decent sized individual back in his playing days.
  4. With the way major league baseball works now, you can have all the statistical analysis and scouting in the world and sometimes it all comes down to the personal judgment of whoever is making the calls. Whether or not to re-sign Lester or trade Lackey for example. Whichever move you make is going to be risky.
  5. One thing's for sure - it doesn't matter what statistics or method you use to evaluate our 2015 pitching staff. They take any possible confusion out of the picture.
  6. Needless to say JBJ could be a huge asset if he starts hitting.
  7. There are just so many inexplicable things about this year's team. If left field is a relatively easy position, and if Hanley's attitude and work ethic have been fine, why has he butchered it out there? Also, why is he unwilling to move to first base if that is the best fit for him?
  8. It's debatable whether Masterson was a bad risk or not, I guess. But $9.5 million was quite a bit for a dumpster dive. The end results were 59.1 innings and a fWAR of -0.2, for a negative dollar value of $1.7 million, for a net loss of $11.2 million.
  9. It's possible that Porcello's head got messed up by the transition to a new team and by the added pressure brought on by a big contract. Some of this stuff is just about impossible to decipher. Look at Josh Beckett. His first year in Boston he puts up a 5.01 ERA. His second year he puts up a 3.27 ERA and carries us to a World Series. After that he had plenty more ups and downs.
  10. An ace is not a cure all, but with what we had in 2015, it's probably a way to add 5 wins.
  11. Our starting rotation is so bad that many of us, including me, have looked at Miley as one of the bright lights. But he has a 4.68 ERA (an ERA+ of 88), and he has averaged less than 5.8 innings per start.
  12. OK, well, you do agree that it was a failure to sign Lester. And that was a huge one. They just got so many things wrong. What made them think Craig would rebound? What made them think Masterson would regain the lost speed on his fastball? What made them think Hanley could do the job in left? It seems like they made a bunch of guesses in the dark, and they were all dead wrong.
  13. They spent to compete though.
  14. Yes, that's my position too. Trading Lackey would have made sense if we were rebuilding.
  15. But what about 'local' revenues - let's say all Red Sox merchandise sold in the city of Boston. What I read is that only 34% of 'net local revenue' goes to the revenue-sharing program.
  16. Not exactly. He'd pitched well for 1.67 years, or since he had the surgery. And he was under contract through 2015.
  17. Yes, they should. But it doesn't seem to be the plan.
  18. If you can find some clear information on this please share with us where it us.
  19. He'll kill us at first too. And reportedly doesn't want to play there. We have to get rid of him.
  20. If we had kept Lester and Lackey there'd be no Porcello.
  21. The more I think about it the more I think we have to trade Hanley for whatever we can, eating a pile of money, obviously. If we don't, his fielding will kill us again next year.
  22. Not signing Lester, trading Lackey, expecting that Hanley would be fine in left field - those are the 3 critical failures to me, to be charged to whoever made the decisions. The Masterson signing also deserves mention - the guy was done and somehow they didn't know it.
  23. Hanley and Sandoval both having negative WAR's has to make you wonder if Farrell isn't a significant part of the problem. You have to wonder if these guys have their heads in the game.
