  1. Personally I think they want the best of both worlds - they want to make money and they want a winning team. I don't think they're trying to create the illusion of having a contending team. That illusion quickly vanishes in the face of being 10 games under .500. There's no way it is any fun for those guys to take the beating they have been taking so far this year.
  2. Good for JBJ, seriously. If he could get an offensive game going that would be a big plus for the team.
  3. Yep. But the offense has been on the rise lately, moving toward middle of the pack at least. Pitching is still in the basement.
  4. But we have the worst staff in the league.
  5. Yeah, it's the 8th time in June we've scored 4 or more runs and lost.
  6. The pitching hasn't performed like projected either.
  7. Miley has worked his way off the problem list for now.
  8. Those are bad numbers. But looking at the history, he has gotten much better in these venues in the second half of his career or so. In the new Yankee Stadium he has a 3.78 ERA and 1.10 WHIP in 66.2 innings. And at Fenway his numbers have been quite good since 2011, in a fairly small sample.
  9. To the average fan, and I guess in many respects that's me, the Castillo deal is a bit of a head-scratcher. It's something new. A 72.7 million investment in a guy who is now almost 28 years old and appears to be not MLB-ready either as a hitter or a fielder. Especially when they grab a guy like De Aza off the scrap heap and you find out your manager likes him considerably better than the 72.7 million guy.
  10. Buchholz's numbers with Leon catching him are outstanding. 11 games - 74 innings - 2.80 ERA. Leon may have won a job for this alone - a David Ross caddy position.
  11. With perfect hindsight, plug Lackey in for Kelly and Shields in for Masterson, we keep all our prospects and add very little to this year's payroll.
  12. There were other options beside trading for Hamels. We could have not traded Lackey, or signed Shields, or done both, without a huge financial outlay. I agree that it's hindsight stuff. But I think most of us were at least a little shocked that they went into 2015 with the rotation they did.
  13. To me there's a point that's hard to dispute. If we had one TOTR starter replacing one of our batting practice starters, we'd be at least 3 games better in the standings. 3 games would put us 4.5 games out of the Wild Card with 90 games left, and with our offense starting to produce. It would be a significant swing in our position.
  14. Hamels has been pretty good. 14 starts, 94.1 IP, 2.96 ERA, 10 Quality Starts. Joe Kelly: 14 starts, 74.2.1 IP, 5.67 ERA, 4 Quality Starts.
  15. Sure, but that's one month. We're not completely dead as it is. If we had Hamels or Shields or whoever, from Day One, we'd be a few games better right now, with better odds of making the playoffs.
  16. Ah yes, the 'we would have sucked anyway' defense.
  17. Time to take Jelly out of the rotation.
  18. Man did we get f***ed over on the Lackey trade. Kelly and Craig have been a disaster.
  19. That's actually an understatement. 10-21 vs. AL East before tonight.
  20. Based on this story, Porcello started throwing the four-seamer more on his own and Farrell and Willis want him to throw it less. http://t.co/qX2uxthwBk
  21. Off topic here, but for you Papelbon fans, I just read a rumor that the Cubs are interested in him.
  22. I think you're right, they're not going to make any moves - unless the team plays much better over the next month. That's what they're praying for. And if the team continues to suck as a unit, making a big move or two would probably be useless.
  23. Playing .615 ball would give them 87 wins. That might be enough this year.
  24. His 30's are around the corner? C'mon. He's 26. The average MLB player breaks in at about 24 or so, I would guess.
  25. A career ERA of 3.31 (ERA+ of 118) in 4,970 innings isn't so bad.
