You think the pets are getting birthday banners or something? Don't give them any ideas because they can be very demanding.

None of the pets are named after Red Sox players anymore. My computer password is the same as my luggage FWIW.

I might have to try that out…

Moon and another poster, Dewey I think, also had a love affair with another defense first SS, Iggy. I remember the Iggy vs Bogey battles. Good times. Iggy turned into a good hitter. No real power, but a good BA and that glove…man, was it good.
Cheng is a good utility defense first guy. Probably an up and down AAAA guy.

I loved Iggy and still do.

Since we switched to the joe brady model 5 years ago, wwhere we have to be super efficient that every player must have a spot and we cant have any overflow, starter level depth on our bench, and we must prioritize obp,

I'm not sure why you would want to do this for me, but thank you for proving my point.

  • We have not been efficient, let alone super-efficient, in signing FAs.  Price, Sale extension, Story, Yoshida, Giolito, not exactly examples of efficient spending.
  • I've always liked depth.  It's why I like Sato.  He will DH, but also back up 3B & LF.
  • And since we since we obviously suck at OBP, that just reinforces my point that we needed, and still need to, prioritize OBP.

They should have re-signed Alex Gonzalez for 2007 instead of signing Julio Lugo.

Lugo was one of the few players I thought Theo had kind of an obsession with.  AGon was a great fit.

Took you this long to tell me you have a pool?  Any Sun Cruisers and/or Twisted Teas?

A couple kayaks that my kids used to go down the street on Tuesday due to all the flooding. The rest of the house is empty. Very rugged lifestyle.

I loved Gonzo, and a wild what if was how he hit 23 HRs and had 88 RBIs the year after the Sox.

It wasn't his offense I loved, but that was wild.

Here is a look at some recent trades and how BTV values those players now: (second number is value before subtracting pay)

23 Mead (53) for 36 Early (69)

21 AR (31) for 31 Eyanson, 27 Azocar & 6 Witherspoon

6 Miller (13) & 4.4 Gutierrez for 24 Mayer (32)

31 Durbin (71), 2 Monasterio (6), 0 Siegler (1) for 27 Harrison (55), 13 Drohan (35), 5 DHam (13)

30 Bennett (76) for 13 Perales (20)

36 Crochet (193) for 46 Teel (84), 40 Meidroth (89), 38 Montgomery (65)

Only the AR trade looks like a major overpay to me.

Also, when Ceddanne first came up, people were still comparing him to Mookie because he had a 1000 OPS in AAA in 50 G. He wasn't that guy. People had false hope.

He was exactly what his numbers suggested, but only for the folks that believe in numbers.  He had some power, but a 48/12 K/W.  That usually worsens since pro pitchers are stingier with walks.

Who was okay with Mayer's first year?

There's a difference between thinking give him more time and being okay with a pretty bad season. (Plus, he got worse on O.)

I was 'okay' with it.  He had a .674 OPS, a poor K/W, but  90 EV.  Too many fans expect remarkable things from 22 year old kids.

Ceddanne came up like a useful version of Will Middlebrooks….

I don’t see the Pirates as a team chasing defensive players at all.

The Athletics?  They’re building the team you want.

Pitt was 26th in overall defense, and the Athletics were 29th.  IMO, it is a moot point.  Teams chase the best all-around players.  FWIW, only 2 of the bottom-15 fielding teams made the playoffs.

It didnt upset me, but I didnt view it as good enough to continue as such.

True. Everyone sees the bad O and forgets the bad pitching.

Especially the ones who got as much hype as Mayer, and Anthony did.🤫

Both, but bad pitching nonetheless.

As it turned out yes, but most of the talk after the short cameo by the Red Sox was about the pitching decisions made by Tracy, which exasperated the situations, and complained by just not the fans, but some of the players themselves. Bad pitching by Miller not once, but twice should not have been unexpected.

I don't put much thought into "talk."

Yes, the choices were bad, but other pitchers would likely have sucked, too, once the starters were pulled too early.

The word "HYPE" gets more hype than any Sox prospect ever got.

Same with about 90% of the prospects.

Anthony gets his name in the paper because he was the best prospect in baseball.  It's not even 'hype'; it's 'news'.  When the #1 draft pick in the NFL gets picked #1, is it hype of is it just simply news.

I was gonna write a long post on "hype" and why it seems to get under so many people's skin.

What is expected when a team has top prospects? Keep quiet? Downplay them?

Do any team not "hype" a nationally high ranking prospect?

Don't many fans get high hopes over them, often unreasonably high, but often enough fully realized or at least in large part? What is inherently wrong with getting some optimism, even if on the overly side?

Nobody said a peep about getting "hyped" over Betts. That was fine.

I'm pretty sure most posters here know nothing in baseball is for sure. We all knew a bust or two was possible, but we had some many, all at once, that it was pretty hard to think none would do well.

BTW, it's not a sure bet all will fail, despite Mayer and KC not looking likely to do well.

And one more thing: wasn't Tolle a highly ranked prospect, too? It's not like we are oh for 3. At worst, maybe 1 for 4 or 1.5 for 4, if you count Roman as a half, and that's still just "so far."

But be honest did runs 3-10 even matter? Once down 2 runs I knew it was over.

It's not like fans are unaware of who is in their system.  I'd say half this board goes 10-deep in farm knowledge, some more.  Are the Yankees hyping Jones, or are his stats just general BB knowledge?
