Adley Rutschman proving to be a bad trade.

Not looking good. I’m sure someone in that organization is regretting not getting a starter instead of an oft injured catcher made of tissue for their two top pitching prospects plus…. Just sayin…

The guy who has been injured the past few years and was injured at the time of the trade is struggling with another injury? Say it ain't so!

Guys get hurt - it's part of baseball.  Luckily Gasper can catch and is on fire from the left side of the plate (not great defensively) and Wong is a good fielding catcher who will play against any lefties we face.  The injury could be a convenient excuse to use Gasper over Rutschman while Gasper is hot - sub in Wong defensively mid-game if. the situation calls for it..  Hopefully Rutschman can contribute this year but we have him next year also - same for Mead.  

What starter was affordable who was going to knock out Tolle, Bennet, Gray, Suarez or Sandoval?  Only Skubal was clearly better and the price for a 3 month rental was more than Rutschman in prospects.  Robbie Ray is having a nice season but I dont think he is any better than Tolle, Bennet, Suarez or Sandoval.  Casey Mize and Jose Soriano are other guys traded but I dont see them as upgrades.   Also - they are both RHPs and thats not what you need against the Yankees and Dodgers.  We have the left handed starters to beat the Yankees and the Dodgers and can mix in Gray.

If You think Bennett and Tolle will be good come October then ok. I don’t. Definitely don’t think Bennett will start the playoffs. Maybe Tolle, but he’s going to be about 70-80ip over last year if they don’t manage it. He could use someone to allow him to skip a turn in sept. Suarez hasn’t looked great either. He could also use another skipped turn. hence the need at the deadline for a starter. There were names we could have got as a rental or someone that had a couple years of control. 
 “Guys get hurt”…he was on the IL when he was traded for and had been injured most of the last two years. HE WAS ALREADY HURT, and is again for the second time since we traded for him. Should have just went with Gasper. That’s my main issue with this trade. We gave up waaaay too much for this guy. Add in the looming possibility of a lockout and it turns into a 2-3 month rental where he’s sitting on the bench as much as he plays. Neither his offense or defense is anything special.

an often injured catcher was not more important than a starter, like we did with Peavy in 2013. It gave our guys the opportunity to get some rest and be more fresh for the playoffs. It is baffling to me. Especially for what Breslow gave them. My God. There were names out there to be had. We didn’t need a front line guy. We could use one right now to give guys rest like we did in 2013.

The iffy thing for me was throwing a new catcher into action with a pitching staff already established as one of MLB's best for four months (even when the offense was invisible). 

The rotation and the bullpen had meshed with Narvaez and Wong and even Gasper. A new catcher, even an All-Star, needs time to learn the nuances and trust of his battery mates... which is why it's better to start such a transition in Spring Training.

Even a Hall of Famer like Pudge Rodriguez failed after being traded at the deadline twice: in 2008 and 2009 he went from a positive WAR to a negative WAR when traded from Detroit to New York, and a year later from Houston to Texas.

Why the panic move by Breslow? (I also call it that considering how much he gave up) Was the main impetus just to keep AR out of pinstripes?
