No matter how we look at it, a homer counts for at least one instant run...

... so I confidently determine the minimum value as 1 HRAR (1 Home Run Above a Replacement batter).

My logic is that the typical replacement batter can't even reach the seats -- unless he overpays for one and enters through the turnstiles.

Home runs do provide instant scoring, I can't argue with that.  I also do not argue with the fact that there is value in home runs.  I just disagree with the idea that you need to be able to hit a lot of homeruns to win in the postseason.

Numerous teams have won rings without power, without good defense, without a good rotation and without a good pen.

there are many ways to build a ring team, and some have won with a great rotation, average offense and a good pen & defense.

Exactly.

Since the beginning of time, teams have been trying to figure out how to build their rosters to win in the postseason.  In short, the best indicator of how well a team will do in the postseason is regular season run differential (and even that correlation isn't particularly strong.)  In other words, score more runs than your opponents.

Or even a good manager.

Well, he just has to be good enough to let Papi hit and Koji close.

What is a fun(ny) exercise is to add up the rankings for RS and RA for each team.  It's surprising how often a team can be 3rd in one category, but 13th in another, and still do very well.

There are several examples where ring teams we horrible at one key aspect of the game.

If Pedroia had to list his real height, would it actually be 5'9"?

Pedroia played with a chip on his shoulder because all he heard was he would not make it because of his size. Hopefully, this kid has a little of that in his makeup. I'm sure he heard the same things from everyone.  I'll take the numbers he put up last year and SOLID D!
