I like their chances of NOT LOSING today more

Is this the first time this year you did not project a loss?

Isn't the argument that WAR "looks at the whole picture?"

but does it tell the right story about the picture?

It tells a better story than anything else we have right now.

Exactly.  Here's what the WAR folks say:  "But WAR is necessarily an approximation and will never be as precise or accurate as one would like."

I love me some defensive versatility.  More than most.  But it seems like when those guys move around ,their war gets juiced. Zobrist was really good, but his WAR tells me had had HOF years, feels a bit exaggerated.  Cedanne, Im sorry, hard to believe hes been as good as his WAR considering the games he spent at 2b.  There is value in guys you can move around the diamond for sure.  I wonder what Brockstar's was.  Note: if it was 8+ in any year, I take it all back.  Cuz who doesnt love Brock.  And his cute kid with the coke bottle glasses that he carried around during 2018 WS celebrations.  Brock bragging about how his 3 yr old crushes it with the playschool bat was nothing short of warm and fuzzy.  I dont get why people dont like when the kids get involved.  Like Steph Currys daughter. I have no beef w that. David Prices kid was cute too, which is surprising if you look at David (not if you look at his wife Tiffany, which also stuck out to me during 2018 celebrations). Ive strayed pretty far from the original point i was trying to make

Was ben zobrist really as good as his WAR?

There were a few that he was a top 10 offensive AND defensive player. Usually a guy is one or the other, not both. He was able to play great defense at multiple positions. Rafaela plays great defense at just CF (average defense at 2b if that) and his bat lags way behind a guy like Zobrist. If we believe Rafaela is a 2 WAR guy, Zobrist is twice as valuable as Rafaela in a regular season. In a great year, he's multiples of that.

If Rafaela kept his butt in CF, his WAR would be higher. He's getting dinged for his mediocre 2b defense.

This is true.  WAR gets inflated by multipostional usage.  But remember WAR is a measurement of achievements, not ability.  While Zobrist was not among the game’s elite talents ever, was his ability to defend more positions helpful in increasing the Rays’ win totals?

Did you love the recently released Darren Baker getting dragged to safety by JT Snow in the 2002 World Series?

I reject that elite defenders cant move around.  Ive been screaming about it for years. Bill B made a career out of seeing lineman out of linebackers.  The MVP of Zobrists seasons was a manager who wasnt afraid to think outside the box.

If Varsho can go from catcher to top 5 defensive CF , I mean.... maybe not every guy can, but the only thing stopping more zobrists is inside the box, old man , thinking.  It wasnt THAT special.

Brock's highs were 2.8 and 2.1 w bWAR and 2.2 & 2.0 w fWAR.

Ceddane has a -0.8 faWAR at 2B, so I'm not sure the versatility factor is adding much to his overall WAR. It's 3.7 in CF. fWAR lists his total as 2.9.

It's the only thing that would make Rafaela look like an above average IFer.

Ceddanne's career fWAR by position:

4.3 CF (758 PAs)

0.9 SS (301 PAs)

-1.1 2B (100 PAs)

4.0 overall (1170)

Ill concede that maybe peyote is the only thing that can help one see the benefit of cedanne at infield, but sir,  seeing the the benefit of cedanne at infield isnt the only thing that peyote can help
