Nope, nothing can make Ellsbury's contract look like a bargain.

Umm, it sure can.

story has to more than double his WAR over the next 4 seasons to equal the WAR that ells produced during his Yankee contract.

Over the next THREE seasons.

The lost time due to injuries is a big part of that, and maybe he keeps getting hurt. Many of his PAs with the Sox have come while returning from long times off. I'm not sure we use those numbers as projections of what he will do, if he has a 500+ PA season.

I hope we get to see it happen.

Well, injuries certainly played a factor in ells production as well. Maybe not to the extent that story's have......

How do you know Story would still have plus range at 2B?

Ummm, he's very athletic and SS range involves the same skill sets as 2B range.

Plus, I only said I felt he "seems" to be better suited for 2B than 3B, since range seems to be his biggest defensive asset.

In his short time at 2B, his metrics showed his fault was turning the DP, so that might be an issue.

IMO, he'd make a better 2Bman than 3Bman, but I'm not saying he should or will be moved, anytime soon- or traded. In the context of where Mayer can play, the talk has gotten speculative and imaginative. I'm just rolling with the talk.

I'd give the odds of a Story trade at 1,000:1 by opening day 2026, but if he builds value, and Mayer shines that could lower.

Sprint Speed:

2025: 28.1 (7 SB in last 23 G).

2022: 28.4

I don't think we are concerned about his range at the moment.

If he’s healthy, and his arm holds up he’ll be fine at SS. His bat is more of a worry to me.

Well, ellsbury only played for 4 seasons of his contract.

So my math is correct.

And in your math world, Story has already played 4 seasons for the Red Sox even though there are 155 games left.

Well, then that's even less likely.

Disagree since he only appeared in 163 games in the first 3 seasons. If he just stays off 60 day IL, he should double that fWAR easily.

Advanced metrics haven't been happy with the balls he's put in play so far. They noted that we should expect a return to form for Bregman, which we have already seen. Story? Fingers crossed for SSS issue.

True, this season has only just begun. But the fact remains that he would have to more than double his WAR from here over the remainder of his contract to equal ell's over his contract with the Yanks.

Personally I don’t care one way or the other. I’m just watching what’s going on with lineup in the field right now, and don’t have any thoughts, or worries of what might happen down the road. Game 8 is today, and game 9 maybe tomorrow. I’ll think about game 100, or 2026 when that time comes. An injury could happen at any moment, and then I’ll think about what changes will have to be made.

I agree, and I have not given up on his bat, just yet, but I think his higher than COL K rate is here to stay.

Campbell gave comments to the Athletic yesterday that Story was who he turned to when he was struggling in ST and he helped calm him down and get him on the right track again.

When are rightly obsessed with stats and analytics, but sometimes there's things that don't show up that we forget about. Story is a good clubhouse guy and great for the kids alongside Bregman.

Good point about the clubhouse.  Story showed a lot of leadership and moxie making it back to the team as quickly as he did last season.  I like Story.  I liked his contract when he was signed.   Here's to hoping he can stay on the field this year.

I'm not giving up on Story as long as his defense is good.  We want a good defensive infield, don't we?

Amen, Bellhorn, amen.

Stop.

I'm doubting Story can ever have a season like he had (several) with COL, but I'll take near GG defense at SS and maybe a .775 OPS. (I'd be fine with .725, but I also think he could go over .800.)

No way Story a worse contract than Ells.

Gotta adjust for inflation.  Ells 7 yrs/153mil; story 6yrs / 140.  But you have to factor in that storys contract was 8 years later.  Inflation had raised salaries by about 20% over those 8 years. So apples to apples, the 2014 equiv of storys contract was like 6/110.  It wasnt top tier money when signed.

Gotta net present day ("nerd") that shiz.

At this point in time Storys biggest crime is standing in Mayers way

There is room for both.

Just play Campbell in CF and let Mayer-Story cover the middle IF.

Rafaela takes DHam's uilitiy role on the bench and can platoon with Abreu, once Ref retires.

Again, story has to more than double his WAR from here to the end of his contract to equal what ells produced during his tenure with the Yanks.

So, he'd do it in 6 years not 7.
