I don’t hate it now, as his defense is better than I realized.  But at the time Story was my least favorite option of all the FA shortstops, and without Coors I referred to him as an “overpaid Paul DeJong.”  But really he’s better than I anticipated.

That said, Bogaerts was always kind of a question mark defensively at SS, something San Diego realized one year into an 11 year contract.  Signing Story served two purposes for Boston. 1. A pre-emotive strike at replacing Bogaerts before he left, and 2. A display to the fans that the Sox were not going to be Tamoa North…

He was 5.8 bWAR per 162 in COL. He's 4 bWAR per 162 in BOS. If he didn't miss so much time, we'd have a better read on him. That's a very big IF since he came as damaged goods and it may be an instance where it's going to continue going forward the further he gets into his 30's.

A lot of people disliked the Story signing, but it was a major one, nonetheless.

No.

Story looked like it might be a lateral move at the time, and that's exactly what it ended up being.

That's why to some it didn't really feel like much of a move and still doesn't.

Falling short on Soto would not, in itself, be an embarrassment.

On the other hand, trying for Soto doesn't, in itself, mean this offseason won't end up an embarrassment.

Quite, but that's an altogether different point.

On the point about being outbid by Cohen - people need to pick their criticism and stick to it (not aimed at you, just a general point). You can't blast the ownership for being cheap and not spending on the top players and then on the other hand after they've lost the bidding to Cohen turnaround and say 'what idiots they wasted their time going up against him.'

Well, I guess people can and will, but then that's what the ignore button is for I guess.

The Story signing was one of the most underwhelming big money signings ever.  Partially because, of course, many assumed he just represented a cheaper replacement for the soon-to-be-gone Xander.

The yucks just keep coming the last last 5 years.

Story was a horrible signing. They didn't even vet his medicals. 160m dollars wasted on an injury prone "replacement" for Bogaerts.

93 games played, 43, and 26, have been his totals the past 3 years.

Adding insult to injuries, his performance as a Red Sox player has been far worse than as a Rockie, proving that playing in the high altitude either inflated his numbers or he simply declined terribly as a player. .737, .566, and .733 OPS compared to his career average of .833.

Trust Red Sox brain trust to think buying a broken JALOPY would be a good replacement for a proven all-star shortstop. Hey if it's 20 bucks cheaper, let's just BUY that one!

We should assign fWAR to the ownership group each year based on signings and trades.

John Henry's numbers have come down recently. No longer in consideration for Hall of Fame.

The med staff should have known he was going to dive and wreck his shoulder.

Damn them!

Well he does remind me of a quarterback that won't get down. He insists on putting his shoulder to the tackler when running. It's just a matter of time before he's hurt again. Count on it.
