So if injuries pile up, you prefer the Sox just play short-handed?

Of course that’s what any fan would want the Red Sox to do is to play short-handed. That goes without saying.

Really that’s where you are going to go when DD brought others in on the other end of the spectrum. Bad, bad comparison if it rates an comparison at all.

No, DD did what he had to in order to fill a void on his pitching staff quickly. He also dove into the San Diego dumpster to find Colten Brewer. Not sure why this exact same process is a bad comparison…

You answered the question with your first sentence.

As stated before, the Sox are not alone in having bullpen issues. A lot of clubs are. The Dodgers blew another one last night. The Yankees blew another save before coming back to win in extras. Finnegan blew a five-run lead the night before. And on and on. At least Breslow did something to address it. Getting the I.L. contingent back would help also.

Well you have clearly said you don’t want them combing the waiver wire. Sometimes that’s the only other option. And sometimes it’s the best option…

I guess you really don’t listen to what’s being said in many other parts of RSN.

I'm in the southern extension. The vibes down here must be better. For years, nobody said s*** when I wore a Sox hat. This year, everyone wants to talk about the Sox.

I wasn’t criticizing DD. I simply said he occasionally dove into the dumpster for arms. I get he did it out of necessity.

I only used him because under his regime, no one would think the Sox were small market…

Unfortunately, we're also having serious starting pitching issues of late.

Waver wire, and the dump are two entirely different things and that’s pretty clear to me.

You mean that the pitchers are coming back down to earth, and the Bailey magic is wearing off.

Apparently Breslow was supposed to call up Wikkelman Gonzalez to fill in for both Martin and Slaten and hope he pitches better on MLB than he has in the minors. Or he could have called up one of the injured Walter, Perales, Campbell or Mata. All were preferable to waiver claims. The only other option on the 40 man was Brad Keller, but he’s also a dumpster dive…

Or guys are rapidly approaching if not passing their career highs in IP. Cannot coach arms to not be fatigued…

Another excuse. Just, because Kut Man, and Houck are reaching career highs doesn’t mean they still can’t pitch. It’s not like their career highs were that high to begin with.

Mata doesn’t matter.

That sounds remarkably ignorant. That’s like expecting Usain Bolt to win the marathon. “So what if he’s never run that far? It’s not like 200 meters is as far as he can go!”

Their career highs are where they are for a reason. And minor league career highs are not equivalent. They’re not irrelevant, but they’re also not the same…

Bolt? Really? Another bad comparison? Houck’s career high is what is was, because he’s bounced around between starting, and BP, been inconsistent, and been injured. So should he just stop pitching, and go home? Ignorant? This is coming from NNN. The Kut Man has bounced around too, so should he just go home now?

Every WS team had their share of dumpster dives. The rules are the rules and the facts are the facts!

Agree on the dempster dives. Also agree my salary numbers are bogus in that most MLB teams have their share of players who either didn't deliver or spent/spend lots of time on the IL. I consider Mookie Betts to be pretty darn resilient, but there is nothing you can do about HBP.

Trevor Story, on the other hand, does not strike me as resilient, and I have my doubts about Casas (but am delighted that he is Worcester on rehab).

The point is as Houck, Crawford, and, well, nearly every pitcher in MLB throws more innings, they get less and less effective, because they get tired and sore. It’s a big, big part of the reason so few teams ever repeat as WSC, something that will get even more difficult with the WC round becoming a series. Or we could go by your theory, which is that Houck’s last two starts are the reality and the previous 19 were the outliers…

I will not fight you on Story being a bad contract. I didn't like it from the start. It was a hedge on Xander leaving, but for a player that was already injured. Dumb move.

Casas has had a lot of injuries in his time AS HAS MAYER WHO SHOULD BE TRADED!

Didn’t you also want Pedroia traded when he first came up?

When he first came up? No. From 2015 on? Yes!

Another thing to consider is the pitch clock and the toll it takes on pitchers. People don't want to hear that because they like shorter games. But it is real. You can't always be in hurry-up mode. Base stealing is easier, which puts more pressure on the pitcher. The ghost runner in extras. It's tough.

Why trade Mayer at the deadline, when maybe he gets you Lucas Erceg, when you can wait until the off-season and he can headline a deal for Garret Crochet?

I could see these being factors. Or “excuses” as Old Red calls them…
