Play here?

Why?

Who do you sit, so Yoshi can play?

When Casas and Abreu return, he won't even belong on a theoretical 28 man roster.

So, to get Yoshi a slot against RHPs, you play Rafaela at SS and bench O"Neill, who is at .745 v RHPs w 9 HRs in 131 ABs?

You bench DHam at .822 v RHPs, too?

Yoshi is at .716 v RHPs. I get the idea that he should get a chance to show he can still play, but I'm not for benching our hottest hands.

Good to see you came around on Ref v RHPs (.856,) at least until he shows he should go back to a platoon.

Hamilton has a 511 OPS the past week. I think he's starting to cool down as expected. I think his ceiling is lower than Yoshida's.

Stop worrying so much about NOshida. He’s here to stay for this year, and probably longer than that. Things will work themselves out with more injuries, or players playing well now will come back down to earth. How about one of your infamous I don’t agree with what Cora is doing, but I don’t think he’s wrong comments.

Why is 7 days a magical number?

.780 in 4 days

.800 in 1 day

.708 in 8 days

.782 in 9 days

.902 in 10 games

.912 in 11 games

Plus, I like Rafaela in CF not SS.

It's a week. Welcome to Earth. Enjoy our hot dogs. Have a beer. This is baseball.

So a week has more significance than 4 days or 8 or 9 days, because it's named a "week?"

Baseball has nothing to do with a "week" vs other time frames.

Have a shot of whiskey.

Yes.

7 days ago, his OPS was .820. Hamilton hasn’t had an OPS that high over any season since he played for the Texas Longhorns. (Not counting the AFL, which is only a couple weeks.)

He served well as the stopgap shortstop, and might have even played his way into a utility role in the future. But he isn’t the answer this year, and benching him to play Yoshida is very likely…

Yeah but what is a week?

I mean, a day is the amount of time for a full rotation of the Earth.

A month represents the amount of time for the moon to orbit the Earth.

A year represents the amount of time for the Earth to orbit the sun.

A millennium represents the amount of time it takes for the f***ing NHL playoffs.

But what is a week?

I guess it's fair to wrangle over Hamilton and Yoshida. I mean, this is a thread on the CBO and moves he might or might not make.

But, as a fan, right now I'm reluctant to endorse dumping anyone when the Sox are playing--and especially hitting--so well.

Besides, Cora is a proponent of the dud liberation movement. You put someone on his 26 man roster, that guy is going out onto the field of play.

And so far Hamilton has played in 50 games and has a WAR of +1.3, 6th best on the Sox. Yoshida, meanwhile, has played in just 31 games with a WAR of 0 and an OPS of .662, which is down 120 points from last season.

I see 2 reasons to keep Yoshida.

First and foremost, are the sunk costs of his $90M contract. As underperforming as he has been, he's ahead of Giolito, who is missing this entire season--he's getting $36M for 2 seasons--and could miss big chunks of next season or even bomb. Story's getting $140M for 6 years, and so far has delivered 3.5 WAR for the first 3 years. Yoshida has delivered 1.5 WAR in 2 years. The Sox are paying Sale $17M this year to pitch for the Braves and Turner $6.7M to play for the Jays.

The other half of the Yoshida case is that he actually can hit--or certainly did in Japan. Maybe his problem could still be adjusting to this country and MLB pitching--on top of the injuries.

In any case, we can be pretty sure Cora will give Yoshida opportunities to prove his worth.

And while it’s nice knowing the lineup, I like the idea of having some decisions.

That 10th player who deserves to start is a good thing, at least until modern medicine figures out how to eliminate injuries forever…

You’re right that Cora plays everyone good , or a bad Bobby D.

Hamilton has a 1.1 fWAR/1.3 bWAR in 157 PA's. That's not a guy you bench.

I don’t know why DHam, and NOshida are getting talked about together. They do different things, and play 2 different positions. If DHam loses AB it won’t be because of NOshida.

I enjoy it when he plays well. I close my eyes or at least flinch when the ball heads his way. His bat has looked good in this short timeframe, but there's no way in hell it holds up. All of his underlying metrics are bad except for chase rate.

3. Dumping Yoshida would greatly hurt any chance of the Sox acquiring a Japanese player in the next few years.

You can find AB's for him, but he'll slow down. Bench him when he cools off.

moon said there was no way to fit Yoshida in a lineup. I put the lineups how Cora might construct them. moon got mad and said "why bench Yoshida in favor of Hamilton?"

Like I keep saying things will work themselves out when the time comes. I doubt everyone, but NOshida will still be raking when everyone is healthy if that ever comes to fruition. If it doesn’t it will be a good problem to have.

Sure he could.

Cora could play O’Neill in LF, Duran in CF, Rafaela at SS and plug Yoshida into DH. He’s done it before…

Hamilton's best position is probably DH anyway.

Seriously? Is this a losing face thing? If so, it's item #3.

release him?

No. I think someone would take him, if we pay a big chunk of his salary. I'd prefer we do that.

Maybe he can stay on the 26 for a while- maybe to PH, but I don't think he deserves to start or even platoon.

IMO, as of right now, he's a better batter than Dalbec, but he can't play 1B. He's better than McGuire but can't catch.

I'm not sure he's better than DHam, right now. He might be, but I'd stay with the hot hand, and I'd prefer Rafaela stay in CF.

He's is likely better than Romy, but Romy is not competition with him to DH: Valdez, Ref and O'Neill are, and Abreu will be soon.
