You have to wonder if Henry and Werner think having a young and 'cerebral' guy like Bloom or Breslow as CBO gives them better cover for their penny-pinching.

It might have, if it worked.

Bloom made some good lower level signings and trades, but swung and missed on almost all deals at$10M or more.

Brez has to go 90% to make up for the past two winters.

A somewhat ominous item about Breslow from Peter Abraham:

Breslow barely acknowledged Yamamoto existed when he spoke to reporters at the Winter Meetings. The hope was to ask him a few questions this week at a time when the fan base is growing increasingly frustrated with the team’s lack of action.

Through a spokesman, we were told there was “a possibility” Breslow would talk to reporters again in January.

I think they want want to maintain the penny-pinching, keep the farm flowing, but not give up on the parent club in August…

Based on the stories that leaked, we don't even know if they were pissed at Bloom for not buying in July, or for not selling in July.

So what were they pissed at him for?

That’s what I was pissed at him for. That and sending back Graterol…

You're not the first to ask.

Maybe they hope Brez can do better than Story, Yoshida, Kluber, Kike II and Richards- his 5 largest FA deals, other than Jansen.

I think we're 100% out on Snell.

The question is whether they will try to sign Montgomery and who our main competition would be. The Rangers maybe. Possibly the Yanks, although they had a bad breakup with Monty.

The Sox might not even be thinking about Montgomery, though, for all we know. That's the scary thing.

When surveyed, the Sox' front office admitted they learned all their German from watching reruns of "Hogan's Heroes" and reading 60's comic books like "Sgt. Fury and his Howling Commandos."

It's not like they know nothing... but it's easy to see how a guy like Snell! Snell! Snell! would turn off the somnambulant owners and their Breslow-moving committee...

That’s the rub.

It sure points to Bloom being the fall guy and Brez being the next sacrificial lamb.

Maybe they are waiting for Anthony, Teel and Mayer, as well as a few other to mature and grow before some sort of splurge, but there is no way they will ever come out and say that.

Crowded with Sam in the middle somewhere.

Sam likes to stay busy, so they put him in charge of all the team's holiday events, decorations and gift-buying.

But just to remind him of how things are, they gave him a credit card with a modest limit and told him anything over and above has to come out of his own pocket.

If Ohtani was worth that much money, how much was he worth as a 2 month rental, last summer?

The Angels sure botched that non move.

Word is, they are high on Snell.

Well, he did win the 2023 Cy Young Award. I suppose that should count for something...

Yes, there are certainly reasons to cross him off the list.

What troubles me is that the Sox have become so adept at finding reasons to cross starting pitchers of any note off the list...

To me, the comment on offering Yamo more than the Price deal says it all.

They wanted to meet with him last to tell him that?

It’s so crazy, it’s hard not to laugh without snorting like a pig.

I still think we need a quality lefty in the bullpen

Many of our righties do very well vs RHBs. One does better.

If we can keep 3 of these 4 guys in the pen all year, our pen is set:

Crawford

Houck

Pivetta

Whitlock

I got it all figured out for Breslow.. After his trade for the Juicer he should trade either Kyle Teel or Roman Anthony ( or both if needed) for Alex Manoah and then sign Marcus Stroman as a FA to complete our SP needs. He can then sign Roughned Odour to solve our 2B need. Off-season done and still well under the cap. John Henry will not need to miss any meals. Merry Christmas everyone. Edited by Randy Red Sox

The need for a specific LHRP died painfully with the 3 batter minimum rule. Just get good relievers capable of getting anyone out…

It’s the one thing we have quality and quantity.

2023 MLB splits:

LHB vs. RHP .761

RHB vs. LHP .753

RHB vs. RHP .713

LHB vs. LHP .689

There's still a bit of an advantage to having a lefty reliever available to face a lefty hitter.

With the 3 batter thing you often see a lefty face 2 lefties and a righty in between.

And of course, if a lefty comes in with 2 outs and gets his man, the 3 batter rule is a non-issue.

No, those are for all pitchers.

It illustrates the fascinating phenomenon that lefty hitters have more trouble vs. lefty pitchers than righty hitters do vs. righty pitchers - by 24 points of OPS.
