O'Neill '22-'23:

0 DRS

less games played than Trout

No one said O’Neil was a better player than Trout. Trout could have written his Cooperstown speech 2 years ago. His one and only drawback is an insane contract going forward vs how much he is likely to play. O’Neil is a much safer play with less upside.

If the Sox want to pay that kind of money to an outfielder, just go all in and get Juan Soto. The deal will be bigger than 7/$260, but it will very likely prove to be a better long term move…

They already have enough LHB OFers. Pass on Soto.

So… pass on Soto because we have Duran and Abreu? That’s like passing on Snell because we have Walter and Bernardino…

Soto already turned down $400M+, so how much money would you be willing to pay this guy? I’ll pass.

Through age 24, Soto has 3375 PA with a .946 OPS (157 OPS+) and 160 HRs

Through age 24, Frank Robinson had 3156 PA with a .932 OPS (142 OPS+) and 165 HRs.

How much does he want?

Just a tick above $440 million.

If Duran is only as good as Walter, why wouldn't we trade Trout for him?

I'm not arguing Duran will be better, although Duran would likely replace ref in LF after PH'ing or PR'ing in most those other 42 games.

I'm not for adding $100M to the budget with an oft-injured LF'er, when we have too many LF'ers as it is.

Sure, he'd look shiny in the "on paper" line-up, and maybe he'd get a few more fans in the seats, only to be disappointed he's on the benhc that game, but the plusses don't outweigh the gains.

In Trout's partial 2023 season, he would have been 2nd on the Sox in fWAR and led in wRC+.

Soto is another guy who should be a DH. A monster DH, but still a DH.

His defensive stats are wild. A few years ago he had good defensive season. I don't know if it's park related or what.

I scaled down because Snell is no Soto…

Yes, I know.

I'd still pass.

I'm tired of playing the IL two Step.

Trout has been fragile now, and only 32, so to pay this guy $35M+ for another 7 years when he most likely will get even more fragile to me would be a pretty bad move, and investment. No thanks.

I'm tired of watching ex-Red Sox win the World Series -- especially after fans here warned of their old age risks: Mookie's too short to be a star for much longer, Eovaldi works out too much to stay healthy, Vazquez is too slow and porky to retain his reflexes...

... at least the Sox signed Old Man Martin after he won a ring -- to show the young'uns how it's done... while he can (before he inevitably slips and breaks a hip).

Nobody on here is proposing to pay him is full salary... UNTIL NOW!

Trout

Detmers

Sandoval

for

Sale

Yoshida

Who said this about Mookie? I don't remember that on here at all.

Vazquez isn't a big loss IMO.

MVP suggested we trade for him while LAA paid $140M of the close to $250M he is owed.

I don't think it's worth the risk. Do you at $110M/7?

Exactly. I'd rather have Wong than Vaz, even if they were at the same pay! Plus, he ain't winning rings.

BTW, I'm tired of watching ex Sox players win rings, too.

It was the Yankee fan doctor. My first argument on talksox; I remember listing plenty of Hall of Famers under 6-foot tall, like Mays and Aaron.

Boston media were warned of Betts' stature, too, especially after he signed with LA. But of course they turned on the trade as soon as he won another ring.

The real Butterfly Effect for the Sox is them just keeping Mookie. That was ownership really just taking a dump on the fans.

I guess you just don't like to watch stars or see a team make the playoffs for once.

Is that your take, because it isn’t mine? I just don’t see JH paying a Trout, Soto, or the Big O. I’d rather have kept Mookie.

That's a completely different conversation.

I missed the trade part, but why would any team pay $140M to get rid of someone. The Sox paying to get rid of Price was bad enough as was paying JT to opt out.

Because otherwise they are paying $250M and not getting the trade return.
