Maybe sit Dugo v LHPs. We know he won't get any better vs them. He's had years to try.

The SOX would lose some defense, something they really can't afford, but offensively speaking I would agree with this.

Credit where credit's due. A member of this SOX team who gets way overlooked is Chris Martin. He's been, by far, the most consistently good reliever on the team.

I seriously doubt there's a better set up pitcher in MLB. Hats off to Mr Martin.

Could have gotten a haul for him!

He should have been the Sox AS rep this year.

Well that's why you keep good old Reyes on the roster, I guess.

He can also play the OF in case of injury. We don't have enough depth there.

He’s not going to get better vs LHP by sitting on the bench watching Refsnyder hit them…

He wasn't getting better playing against worst LHP in AAA. Why would he get better now?

The franchise is also OUT on him.

He really has been great.

He is one of those "late bloomers," who came to the bigs at age 28 and 29, did poorly, then came back in 2018 at age 32.

Since 2019, he's at...

2.88 ERA

2.86 FIP

1.02 WHIP

am amazing 8.6 K/BB ratio. (9/6 K/9 and 1.1 BB/9)

Among RPs with 200+ IP since 2019, he places:

1st K/BB at 8.62 (The next guy, L Hendriks is at 7.83 and 3rd is RIggy at 5.64)

6th in xFIP at 2.90

6th WHIP at 1.022

13th in fWAR at 4.4 (o.1 from Chapman)

Since 2022, he's only gotten better:

2.44 ERA (16th)

2.43 xFIP(4th)

0.986 WHIP (8th)

8.8 K/BB (1st) 2nd in Minter at 5.9

Exactly. Plus, I'd like to see us actually play the better players.

Vs LHP

Dugo 637 OPS

Duvall 643 OPS

Seems like they should just go:

LF Masa

CF Duran

RF Ref (yuck defense)

DH Turner

Duvall has been -3 DRS this year. If they really don't see Dugo as a long term option, just sit him. Give the reps to Refsnyder, a guy that has put the work in.

Ref has been nothing, but a journeyman for a reason for years. Dugy was maybe their best player the first part of the season, and now, because he might not be in the team’s long terms plans you want to sit him. Wow!

Dugo has been "nothing" vs LHPs his whole career.

His name looks better in the line-up than Ref, but the eye test says otherwise, right?

He can't hit LHP. Why do you want to watch loser baseball with a guy that can't hit lefties? Just sub him in after the bullpen gets going.

Verdugo vs LHP 2023:

230 AVG

0 HR

For his career, he only has 6 HR vs LHP. He turns into Jeff Frye when facing LHP.

Worse than "journeyman" level.

I don’t have a problem with Ref playing even playing against RHP, because Dugy, and Duvall haven’t been wielding a hot bat, but i wouldn’t take Dugy out, because he’s not in any future plans.

I wouldn't start Ref against RHP.

I’m not the one who said if they don’t see Dugy in any long range plans sit him. That would be the last reason to me.

So, who are "the only three," now?

Verdugo has already impaired his trade value and Bloom would get next to nothing for an unreliable, streaky attitude player. He will not get an extended contract. How do you get anything for him, except in a bigger package ? He won't be younger or more skilled than his Large Sample Size shows. He needs to play his way back into a plus OF'er/hitter , if he can.

Refsnyder is a decent #4 Of'er , bench Ph'er vs LHP , day off sub. He is under contract for 2024. Duvall is not hitting well , maybe lost strength in his wrist this year. He will not be re-upped for 2024.

I prefer Turner at DH for the rest of this year, which puts Yoshi in LF. IMO, you have to let Duran continue to work on his game against both LHP and RHP if you are going to realize his potential ( or lack thereof )

So the answer to the question is that for the next 50 games should be Dugo, Yoshi, Duran as the primary starters . Also note that Cedanne Rafaela may get a look in September, and be a factor in 2024 ST.

I feel a better terminology for Ref is a short platoon OF'er/DH.

He needs to start every single game, when a lefty starts.

He can PH, when he does not start.

The Red Sox can't bring up Rafaela too soon, so he keeps his rookie status for next year. Remember, a team with the Rookie of the Year gets an additional draft pick after the first round. Teams with rookies who finish second or third in the voting get additional international picks.

How many times do the Sox have to tell you it's all about making sense. CBO Bloom and GM O'Halloran have repeatedly noted they'll make any move "as long as it makes sense."

For the last 18 months, the FO has not made a lot of sense , just a small amount occasionally

Refsnyder is a role player. Verdugo is a starter…

Although Dugo has not been platooned, he likely should have been.

The long platoon is often called "the starter."

Or maybe Rafaela is not ready. Either/or.
