Wouldn't mind giving him a shot if we feel we need a backup 1b this September. I don't see him coming up before then.

Bobby will likely be traded. The team has reportedly been upfront and honest with him about that telling him he's "playing for everyone else"

They've been trying to trade him since Spring Training. Not a big market for guys like Dalbec.

I think some team would gladly take him, just wouldn't give much back.

Agreed.

If Turner bolts, this winter, Bobby D might have more value to us, but we may need that roster slot for Rule 5s and signings. We may just have to take the best offer and hope he doesn’t hit 40 HRs for the Rays.

He'll be 29 next year. Why worry about what he does if he leaves. Worry about him being a replacement level player and taking up room on the active roster.

I wouldn't say I'm worrying.

I am one of the few who have not given up hope on Dalbec. He showed, in some pretty long stretches, that he can hit well enough to be a plus. His D at 1B was frightening and surprising.

His splits point to him possibly being a good platoon DH, but who wants to take up a roster spot for that.

If he could hit both lefties and righties, or become an average defender at some position, he'd have a much easier path.

I do think he can hit 30-40 HRs, if given the chance. I just don't see that happening with us.

I'm okay with trading him for the best offer, even if it is no better than what we got for Northcut or Moreland.

Sweeping the Braves--what an outcome ! Now to win 4 of 6 out west , followed by a sweep of the Jays at Fenway.

this team is getting scary, let's hope they don't live up to their reputation and fall apart, I think a lot of guys are getting self confidence, beat the Yankees by one game

He had that one very good bullpen session, 30 pitches, about 2 weeks ago. But today just reconfirmed he should not start again for the Sox. And maybe, as you suggest, not pitch again for the Sox. He certainly has not been missed.

I will speculate that Kluber could easily reach a position where the Sox will DFA him in order to manage the 40 man roster slots. Or find a willing doctor to justify a 60 day IL assignment, like Kaleb Ort just did to make room for former Giant Mauricio Llovera .

Ort hasn't pitched since July 5th. I think he has a legit injury.

What reputation are you referring to? In the John Henry era, now in its 3d decade, the Sox have not had that reputation even though they definitely fell apart in 2011, which cost Francona his job. Four WS wins (and no losses) in the JH era is one more than any other team and three more than the Yankees. Just two years ago a throw-together Sox team won 92 games, beat the Yankees in the wild card, the 100 win Rays in the ALDS, and finally lost, 4 games to 2, to the Astros in the ALCS.

Last year's Sox did not fall apart. They struggled from the outset.

All that said, I don't disagree that getting a wild card this year is far from a certainty. The Sox are playing great right now, but are about to play (Aug 4-Sep 20) 48 games with just two days off, and their rotation is 3 + Pivetta. I have my doubts about Kluber, Houck, and Whitlock, but think "good" Sale would make a real difference. So Bloom getting another reliable starter is almost essential. The problem is those guys can be pricey in prospects.

Do you really need a doctor to justify the assignment? I’ve never heard of a player being denied a DL/IL stint…

No, you don't need a note from your doctor. I do think you need concurrence from your player, in the general sense, because you are in effect ending their season at this point, possibly messing up any performance bonuses, etc. If Kluber is not physically able to pitch at an MLB level ( much less AAA) then he would be likely to go along with any program that does not embarass him any further. In the hypothetical, a 60 day IL designation would seem better for him than a DFA tag. He'll get paid either way.

If a 60 day IL assignment for anyone did not require some degree of confirmation of physical ailment, then it would be too easy to solve roster issues by using them generously. I am sure it has been abused from time to time.
