So Sale and Whitlock came back as promised and both did well. If Houck follows suit, it's actually going to make the trade deadline inactivity look quite justifiable.

If all the injured pitchers come back, and do well great, but to me the Red Sox went way too long using openers, and especially against the last series with Toronto. We’ll see how things end up, but if the Red Sox end up missing out on the postseason by a game, or 2 it won’t look so good.

We still may have lost 1-2 games by not getting a SP'er before July 30th's pen game loss.

7/30 loss (Bernardino)

8/5 loss (Schreiber)

8/6 loss (Bernardino)

Plus, the tax those pen games took on our pen.

If we end up missing the playoffs by 1-3 games, this can still be a debate that goes on all winter long.

Hard to say what said SPer would have done in those games.

And our offense didn't score a lot of runs in those games.

Yes, that is why I said "may have lost."

My guess is Lorenzen would likely have won one game.

If he was even scheduled that day…

We lost 3 pen games from July 30th onwards. I'm pretty sure had we traded for 1 pitcher, he'd have had 2-3 starts, and we'd have 2-3 less pen games, depending on who we traded for and when.

Minimum 2 games.

Or instead of getting a pitcher at the deadline, getting a better pitcher than Kluber in the offseason?

Now you're talking my language. I do anticipate, maybe hope, Henry and company are going to turn a few heads and make a big splash this offseason.

Not Ohtani big.

Where are they hiding Kluber now?

Shut down from all baseball activities on 7/29/23 and is on the IL (shoulder).

Isn't there a time limit on rehab assignments?

Yes, but he's not rehabbing, he's just on the IL. A player can refuse the IL if he's healthy. Kluber is not healthy. With the rehab, a player can only be rehabbing on in MiLB for 20 days (the Trevor Story rule we just saw).

My guess is Kluber's shoulder is really bad, he doesn't want surgery and is just waiting out the season. Maybe he retires in the offseason?

Okay. Good to know.

He hadn't gone past 7 innings before this season. In back to back starts with PHI he went 8 and 9, throwing 101 and 124 pitches.

I know you have a shiny new toy and are trying to get into the playoffs, but the guy had a 7-0 lead. No matter how much you hate your pen, you have to think about the next 2 months with him. He's already at a career innings high for a season.

Maybe it works out? It's a gamble though for a guy in his 30's though.

After getting 8 days off, Lorenzen's next start:

3.1 Inn

1K

1BB

8H

6ER

Maybe they should have saved some bullets for a guy who hasn't been a fulltime starter?

@StudyHallSharp

Michael Lorenzen threw a no-hitter against the Nationals last week

His xFIP in that start per Fangraphs? 5.85

Phillies fans don't seem to be too upset right now. We'll see how they feel after his next start.

...who will be lambasting the team if he gets even a muscle cramp between now and the end of the season.

They’ll boo him just like they booed Gandhi, the tooth fairy, and Francis the field-goal-kicking mule…

It's a hockey town, so how bad can it be?

They have 4 major sports and are “passionate” about them all.

The funniest story of the year was earlier in when Trea Turner was getting booed at home games by his own mom!!

You may have caught the recent story about Eagles fans doing the wave while an injured player for the other team was being carted off the field. It's stories like this that contribute to the legend of Philly sports fans obnoxiousness/stupidity.
