If the record actually improves, and the Sox finish over .500, could next winter finally be the offseason where Bloom doesn't just strip it all down again and sign another dozen Kluber/Kikes to one-years?

This last winter was, by far, the first winter Bloom signed more guys to 2 or more year deals than one year deals, especially if you cont second year options.

I don't think we should read into what happened in 2020, 2021 and 2022 as Bloom's permanent M.O. The budget forced many of those one year deals- that and the idea that the team was not "ready" for making big move signings.

2023 1 Year Deals

Duvall

Kike (his 3rd year w Sox)

2023 1 Year with Team Option

Kluber

Turner (player option)

2023 2+ Year Deals

Devers 10 (starts in '24)

Yoshida 5

4 Whitlock

Jansen 2

Martin 2

Joely 2 + 3rd year arb

(Paxton took his 2nd year option)

Trades:

1 Year: Mondesi, Tapia

2 Years: Bleier (option)

3+ Years: Chang, Mills and more

(Summer: McGuire 2 more, EValdez & Abreu 5+)

If the Sox miss the playoffs and don't at least show a lot of hopeful signs, Bloom's permanent M.O. will have nothing to do with this team.

Tic-toc indeed.

We really don't know what Henry's expectations are for this team. That's all that matters at the end of the day. If he's happy with the Sox being 85ish wins, then Bloom keeps his job. There's just so much behinds the scenes stuff that it's hard to forecast the "palace intrigue" nonsense with FO job security.

Okay.

I, for one, will blame him, and him alone, for spending too much on the O and not enough on the rotation.

Since the Story signing, the spending restrictions should not be used as an excuse.

2023>>>

$575M+ Offense:

313 Devers

140 Story

90 Yoshida (not counting posting fee)

10 Kike

8 or 22 Turner (player option)

7 Duvall

$50M+ Pen:

32 Jansen

18 Martin

$10M Rotation:

10 Kluber

4 Paxton (actually deal made last year)

That's his legacy. That's his M.O.

If it was a 5 year plan, then 2024 is year 5, assuming they count 2020.

However, I thought Ben had a 5 year plan, and he didn't make it to 5, despite one ring.

The only mention of 5 year plans is here on Talksox.

I also think it's safe to assume that Henry's expecting results that improve the bottom line. Out of the playoffs ain't it.

Ben had the ring and young talent ready to compete at the end of his tenure. Bloom has no ring and much less young talent at the potential end of his tenure. I've compared the two in the past. They both made wildly ridiculous personnel decisions. Neither have much of a personality to lean on (don't go to the Tik Tok bourbon guys to see what they say about the Whistle Pig bourbon that Bloom was flaunting in the Globe piece). Ben had more success, partly due to Theo. Bloom could be replaced by an internal promotion and the machine would march on. Henry's bottom line may be better off for it too.

That is, unfortunately, the mark of a bad team, pains me to say.

No, it is not the mark of a bad team.

Kansas City is on a pace to go 47-115. They are not even the worst team in MLB, the A's are on a pace to go 31-131. Those are bad teams.

The Sox are average, not bad. We need to see what happens once Duvall and Story get back.

They will probably finish 5-6 games over ,500 (absent massive injuries). It wouldn't shock me to see the whole division over .500.

I don't disagree.

Plus, much of the young talent helping now, are DD's kids, which is understandable, when you factor in that Bloom has had 4 winters and 3 drafts, one of which was the shortened 20 draft, and he's taken mostly HS kids with his top picks.

Whitlock and Mayer are his two major young "gets-" maybe Drohan, Bleis and/or Yorke joins the group

There is such a wide range on where this team may end up in the win column. Under 81 is still in play, for sure. 86-87 seems like a good bet (5-6 over as you suggest.)

I'm still thinking 88-90 is very doable, absent massive injuries, and I even think with good luck on injuries, maybe 91-93 is possible.

I like your positivity, but in the context of the Red Sox, a team that doesn't make the playoffs is a bad team in my humble opinion.

That's certainly the way Sox ownership and management should be seeing it.

By the way, welcome back, UN, you were missed.

This is UN?'s original account. I've been trying to log back in for a long time, but I lost both my password and the email it was attached to. Shout out to MVP and Jbay for helping me get this one back.
