Sox gave up Josh Taylor

The Kansas City Royals needed a lefthanded reliever after losing Gabe Speier to the Seattle Mariners on waivers in November.

FanGraphs projects Aldalberto Mondesi with 1.2 WAR and a wRC+ of 84 in 117 games this year:

Mondesi will be paid $3.045 million in his final year of team control.

@BOSSportsGordo

Many Red Sox fans wanted Josh Taylor to be non-tendered.

Instead, they acquire Adalberto Mondesi and a PTBNL for him.

I guess Mondesi is the backup 2B/SS.

Taylor was a good pitcher when healthy, but who knows if he'll be able to get back there this year.

Maybe a change of scenery helps Mondes? Who knows, but he’s been very injury prone and was horrible the few times he took the field last season.

Has he been placed on the IL yet?

If he can play the 50% of the games that Arroyo will miss!

Would this be a win if they had dealt Brasier instead of the oft injured Taylor?

And that's your team. Mondesi will only make $3M -- Iglesias made $5M last year, and Elvis was never coming here for $15M.

Cora said the other night that Kike is his shortstop, but he'd have to take care of him (after his injury). Maybe Mondesi, another speed guy, can give Kike some rest... or allow him to roam to second or centerfield once a week.

Will he end up with numbers like 2018-19? No. Will he k a lot and take very few bb's? Yes. Does he still have his speed post ACL surgery (68 SB per 162G from '18-'21)? Who knows!

My gut tells me that he's not the everyday SS though.

Mondesi has played both 2B and SS. I think he has a good bit of upside, which Bloom loves. I would have rather that they found a starting SS to plug in just for the year, but I don't think that guy exists. Maybe Story will be back at some point?

On second thought, perhaps the Royals did not have a dire need for a lefthanded reliever with Aroldis Chapman and Amir Garrett already in the bullpen.

Taylor is better than Garrett when healthy.

Hope seems like an effective strategy for this team at this point. Maybe they hope he stays healthy long enough for Story to return.

If healthy, Mondesi is a great pick up for this team, even if it's only for the first half of the season. This feels like a tall task given his history, but they gave up Josh Taylor for him....so whatevs.

He is never, ever healthy. His greatest asset (speed) just got hammered with an ACL injury. This is turning a known ball of s*** and trading it for another ball of s*** who might improve if he can stay healthy. It isn't a bad deal for what you gave up, but relying on this guy is a fools errand

He has been a big disappointment. Bloom likes to shop in the basement in the irregular and damaged bin.

Not bad. Dumpster diving was getting a little old.

MLBTR...

In Mondesi, Boston is acquiring an immensely talented 27-year-old infielder — but also one of the most frequently injured players in MLB over the past few seasons. Dating back to the 2018 season, Mondesi has appeared in only 40% of the Royals’ possible games, missing time due to a right shoulder impingement, a groin strain, a pair of left shoulder subluxations, a left hamstring strain, an oblique strain and, most recently, a torn ACL that wiped out his 2022 season. Both the left shoulder injury and ACL tear required surgery.

It’s a daunting list of injuries for Mondesi, but it’s nevertheless difficult not to be enticed by Mondesi’s blend of power, speed and defense. In 1366 Major League plate appearances, Mondesi has 38 home runs, 54 doubles, 20 triples and 133 stolen bases. He’s also amassed 23 Outs Above Average and a 13.3 Ultimate Zone Rating in 2126 career innings at shortstop.

Yup.

Taylor was really good, when injured, so we basically just swapped out injury for injury, but gained at a position of high need.

This guy is pretty damn good. The big if on health is getting to be our team banner.

If he can ever get 650 PAs, he might hit 20 HRs, steal 65 bases and be a huge plus on D at SS.

Once again, the "BIG IF" is about health.

Sale

Paxton

Mondesi

Arroyo

Kike

Kluber

Barnes

(Houck & Whitlock wer4e hurt, last year)

Taylor 2.4

Mondesi 1.5

PTBNL

Bloom taken to the cleaners on a trade again. Wow...

Depends on the PTBNL, which could depend on how many games Mondesi plays between now and mid-July.

I like Taylor. Mondesi is 10 lbs of talent jammed into a 5 pound shoulder brace. This deal could go bad just as easily as it could pan out…

Mondesi has mad skills, but the chances he gets 650 PAs are only slightly greater than the chances I do…

Only 28 players got there last year, but his chances are infinitely better than yours.

He will definitely come closer, but I would be willing to wager neither of us get there…

The odds of him getting 650 PA's would probably be 1000 to 1. Higher?

Over/Under 250 PA/s?

If Kike gives us 500 and Arroyo 350, we may just need 250-400 from Mondesi to make it matter. Having 3 in the mix is better than 2, but we can't keep filling 40 man roster slots with players looking at playing less than half the time as being more probable than more than half the time.
