John said he was a good hitter but we are paying him to be a great player. Clearly he is not even a good defensive fielder and his hitting numbers are good but are they great? I don't see John's question as stupid but instead, thought provoking.

I have never read a Tomase article and come away with thinking that it was a "thought provoking piece."

I mean some of them have provoked thoughts of violence, like with Hackarotti.

I'm pretty sure a lot of those articles are submitted via crayon.

He's just a harmless, brainless little critter.

So harmless that he got thrown off the Patriots beat for some ********, but is still working in this town.

Tomase is the King of Overreactions. The dude wore a whole article on how poor the Sox roster construction was because Dalbec played one game at shortstop. One can assume he drafts articles about how the whole bullpen is suspect every time a position player comes in to pitch…

I stopped reading Tomase.

Is it me, or has he put on a fair bit of timber this season?

I'm not saying he's a fatso, but every time the camera is on him, he's bloody eating....

You don't see Austin riley stuffing his face, that's for sure

What's the point of this post?

Pointing out, that in my opinion. He's not exactly living the life of an athlete.

Devers is never going to be Svelte Sven. I think he keeps himself in baseball shape.

The amazing part is he actually stayed healthy this year.

Baseball shape? Which one?

LaMarr Hoyt, Greg Luzinski? Or Prince Fielder?

Or David Ortiz, or Kyle Schwarber.

He looks thinner than he has at other times.

I admit I worry Devers weight because I know it can affect his long term viability, especially as a position player and on the basepaths. But, if we've being honest, the one thing we should worry about is his swing and "command" of the strike zone. Besides, this season he leads the Sox in games played with 140--also total bases, dingers, and rbi's.

Statistically, his 2023 OPS, .859, is right at his career OPS of .854 but below last year's .879, 2021's .890, and 2019's .916. His 114 K's are no worse than last year's or 2021's. His 34 dingers so far are below last year's 42, but will likely be no worst than 2021's 37 in 156 games.

I've never worried about his swing or approach to the K zone.

He'll look bad on some swings, but he also hit balls out of the K zone for Hrs enough times, for it not to be a big concern, for me.

Maybe, as he ages and loses his edge a little, it might become a major concern, but often player figure it out as they mature and make adjustments.

IMO, Devers is fine, as is on offense.

I'm also a believer in the benefit of having a line-up that has players with differing approaches. It makes it harder on opposing pitchers and when most batters can't figure out that day's pitcher, the unique approach guy does.

He looks fine from what I've seen. He's a big man. The bigness helps put baseballs over fences. Just let him be.

I know the defense is a concern, and I think it can be improved. However, it is pretty crazy that everyone is a bit down on Devers and he’s having a down year and still has 32 homers, 97 RBI and an .859 OPS.

This isn't a down year. It's on par with his career avg. What Devers is doing this year is pretty much what you're going to get.

Which is great, just not for the contract he got though.

He is definitely worth the contract. If he hit free agency he’d get this or more from another team.

Besides, what was the alternative? Trading another star player in his prime for prospects and alienating an already pissed off fan base?

If the team was in playoff contention, people wouldn’t be complaining about him.

He won't be worth the contract. He's too much of a defense liability for that. He would have to hit like Ortiz did in order to be worth this contract.

And with Ortiz they always got the DH discount.

And you literally just said he's having a down year when in reality is about his career avg. So you saying he's worth the contract with what you just said makes no sense.

Raffy earns way too much if he morphs more into a DH. Bloom could have paid big bucks for the star who could play superior defense at 3 positions and who could run, but he opted for the DH with no speed and stone hands.
