The question for Bloom moving will be forward will be how he deploys his resources. He has been hesitant to trade prospects during his tenure, but at some point he will have to trade from the surplus to acquire established big leaguers.

Where is this surplus??

Woo won 14-12, so I'll skip the pitching numbers.

Teams are afraid of Wilyer Abreu, and for good reason. When they weren't walking him 3 times, he homered in his other 2 PAs. It was his 22nd. His OPS is now .927!

RHern went 2-4 w HR & BB. Chang homered and walked. Rafaela 2-5.

I hear tell we only draft SSs, so maybe we have one to spare.

We went through about 8 of them this year in Boston. Seems like we need to keep them on hand

Hang’em Chaim does not resign bogey and all hell breaks lose with our middle infield

Signing Bogey would have been a big mistake.

Not adding someone like Iggy, when he was available during the season was a bigger mistake.

Not playing Reyes a few games, when Cora chose to start Kike, instead, was also a mistake.

Hell, as bad as DHam looked, he seemed better than Kike. (I'd have even tried Arroyo at SS over Kike,)

Signing Bogey for 280 mill would have been a big mistake.

But it's worth noting his current fWAR of 2.8 would be leading the Red Sox.

Then, subtract just about every other signing to match his AAV. Go ahead: take the worst contracts, then compare,

I'm not even convinced signing him to a $200M/7-8 deal, earlier will prove to be worth it.

Bogey's AAV is 25.5.

Subtract Kluber, Kike, Brasier and some other bits and you're there.

I wasn't counting Kike, as he was not a FA or winter signing, but I suppose you can count Brasier and Kike.

More likely, if we did sign Bogey, we don't Martin, and Yoshida.

Or

Jansen & Turner

Or

Turner, Martin & Duvall

I know including Kluber makes signing Bogey better, but we were always going to sign a SP'er. At one point, Eflin looked like the better choice, but he's out for the year.

And if we had bogey and the 3 wins that come with him, would we be in the wild card contention now?

We were not going over the tax line, and we were going to sign a SP'er.

I don't think we can say sign Bogey, instead of Kluber + ____.

It would have been Bogey or Yoshida + _____, Jansen + Martin or Tuner, Duvall and Martin.

Portland won 2 to 1. Jordan with a tater and yorke with 3 hits. Rosier stole his 43rd base. Gambrel threw an amazing 6 innings.

Gambrell was part of the Beni trade.

Woo got smacked down.

Drohan is really making his meteoric rise in the rankings look totally like smoke and mirrors. (His ERA is now 6.00 in AAA.) Woo had just 4 hits:

1-3 w BB Rafaela & Abreu

1-2 w BB Kavadas

POR won 2-1

Gambrell went 6 (3H, 1ER, 3BB, 5K) 3.42 ERA

Jordan 1-3 w HR and BB

Yorke 3-4 w 2B

GRE lost 8-4

Anthony 2-4 w 3B & 2B & BB

Teel & Paulino 2-4

Gambrell was the one part of that trade I looked at and thought “why?”

I didn’t even ask that about Franchy…

I liked de la Rosa more, at the time.

Yeah, you can't bring a guy in A ball up to play in MLB.

Ha

He was a 3rd round pick. Had a lot of injuries in college and ended '21 on IL. Surgery prevented him from pitching last season. Gambrell was also the PTBNL, so he may have just been an afterthought? Has back of the rotation upside.

So it is ok to trade alleged surplus if it is in the lower minors?

Low minor league hot shots aren't in high demand much, anymore.

^^^

Teams want major league ready talent since the hit rate on low level players is worse.

Red Sox are not in the top 10?

Baseball America had them at #5 recently. I posted that link earlier in his thread.

Obviously BA and MLBPipeline have different criteria. If MLB Pipeline takes pitching into account instead of high volume of good prospects, I could see this. Particularly if they focus on MLB-ready or at least MLB-adjacent pitching…
