MLB Top 100 prospects just updated. Mayer #13, Anthony #37...Rafaela #78, Teel #88... Bleis is MIA (not in Miami).

The Yankees have zero in the top #78. Jays only have two in the top 100.

But the Orioles have four guys in the top 28, six in the top 55. Tampa has three middle infielders in the top 36; still?

Hang’em Chaim may not know anything about pitching or outfield. But he loves those middle infielders

Teel threw out a 2nd runner this afternoon.

This may send some amateur analysts into a frenzy, but with Teel -- maybe, just maybe -- Bloom didn't just snatch the Best Player Available... because the Red Sox really needed a top catching prospect --

--- ya know, to help build the core of the next sustained contenders.

NOW SIGN (OR TRADE some shortstop prospects for) BELOW-30 CONTROLLABLE STARTING PITCHERS... ASAP damn it

They drafted the best available player. Teel was around 7th in most draft boards, and got snatched by the Sox at 14.

It's the way it should be, even if you are already stacked at the position (not that we were at catcher.)

It's obviously only coincidence that Teel was the best college catcher in the country -- and that the Red Sox had no really good catching prospects in their entire system.

But since he was the no-brainer best player available when Boston's #14 pick rolled around, the front office must be salivating at the potential. It should be no problem to move him to shortstop, after they move the other best players they picked who also play shortstop to other positions. Teel could even DH on the days he doesn't pitch...

Will leaving him behind the plate hurt his offense????

Will leaving him behind the plate hurt his offense????

Even if it does, let's see how the comps might look:

Let's say his OPS would be .825 as a catcher and .850 at 1B or elsewhere.

League catcher OPS have ranged from .660-.715 over the last 5 years.

League 1B OPS have ranged from .730-.790 over the last 5 years.

LF: .705 to .775

DH: .730 to .805

He's be about 140 points higher than the norm at catcher, but only...

90 higher than 1B

110 at LF

90 at DH

I'll take a catcher that blows almost every other team's catcher OPS out of the water than a 1Bman, left fielder and DH who is just marginally better than his counterpart.

SAL lost 3-1

Monegro 5IP, 3H, 0ER, 1BB, 11 K

Romero 1-3 w 3B & BB

Monegro moved up to #22 on MLB Sox prospect list... only 4 other pitchers are ahead of him: #9 Gonzalez, # 10 Perales, #16 Bastardo, #18 Drohan.

Monegro and Perales are each 20 years old.

Interesting to note that the Red Sox current big league leader in WAR -- Bello -- is already 24. He debuted at 23, after rocketing through the system.

(man, we're going to be in awe of that 2027 Sox club... those of us old-timers who make it that far)

Is this the best top 5 we've had since _____?

I know you want to say 2014...

... but we both know that, first, some of these guys have to make the majors -- and ideally, combine to win a World Series...

Sox Top 5 2014 preseason prospects (Fangraphs): 1. Bogaerts, 2. Bradley, 3. Garin Cecchini, 4. Betts, 5. Swihart.

Sox Final 2014 prospect rankings (Bleacherreport)... Bogie, JBJ, Mookie, Vazquez and Workman were now graduates... but still:

... #1-5: Castillo, Swihart, Owens (EL Pitcher of the Year '14), Cecchini, Margot

... #6-10: ERod, Barnes, Ranaudo (EL Pitcher of the Year '13), DEVERS, Chavis

So ALL Top 10 Red Sox prospects on the final list at least made the Show. Will the 2023 farm be the best in a decade?

Thanks for doing the homework, I was too lazy to do myself.

So, perhaps the best in 9-10 years.

Maybe someday, we can say even longer.

That April 2014 SP top 10 had:

Betts, Bogey, JBJ

Barnes, Workman

Owens, Swihart, Ranaudo, Cecchini, Webster

(Notable 10-20: Devers, Vaz, Margot)

By SEP 2014, graduations mad eit this list:

Devers, ERod, Margot

Barnes

Swihart, Owens, Johnson, Chavis, Ranaudo, Cecchini

Notable 11-20: Kopech, TShaw)

My pleasure. I love looking back at that class. And Sam wasn't interested in trading any of those guys, either (though Dombro finally moved Margot in a package that helped make the Sox a first-place team).
