Much has been said about the lack of good pitching in our farm system. No top picks have been used on pitchers in a while. That seems to support the idea that we are not focusing enough resources on pitching.

The recent additions to the big club have brightened things a bit. Some came via trade (Winkowski), some came via Rule 5 (Whitlock), some came in other ways (Schreiber, Bernardino and others,) and some came from DD's farm, like Bello, Crawford, Murphy and Walter.

Here is a quick look at some still on the farm, listed in order of SP's rankings. (Note: I am no expert on prospects.)

6. Drohan has struggled in AAA, after looking great in AA. He did okay in his last start, but has a ways to go to hold the #6 slot. (.751 OPS Against AA/AAA)

7. Perales has started pitching well, of late and is a 20 year old in A+. (.621 OPSA)

9. Wikelman has pitched very well, recently. He walked 4, tonight, but still did okay. (.618 OPSA)

(#11 Walter, #13 Murphy & #47 Jacques may graduate, due to playing in MLB, now.)

18. Mata may be activated, this month with Woo. The guy can't stay healthy.

19. Rodriguez-Cruz has looked good this year and should rise in the rankings. (.660)

25. Guerrero had a tough outing, tonight, but has been decent, this year. (.545)

26. Fernandez has struggled and may drop in the rankings, soon. (.685)

30. Rogers A+ .676 OPSA

32. Monegro A- amazing .530 OPSA

36. Dobbins AA .600 OPSA

37. Blalock A+ .611 OPSA

40. Bastardo A+ .614 OPSA

41. Hoppe A+ .777

42. Paez A- dropped, last month, but is pitching well, now. (.649)

44. Dean A- .852 is disappointing.

48. Politi AAA

51. Denlinger AAA .598

52. Liu AA has 104K and 41 BB in 83 IP

54. Zeferjahn AA

55. Gambrell AA should move up, a lot. Leads farm in IP

56. I Coffey AA should move up, too. (.678 OPSA)

57. J Ramirez A- (.655)

Luis de la Rosa A- (.627)

Jonathan Brand A- .418

Elvis Soto FCL/A- .542

Nathanael Cruz A- .567

Where will Noah Song fit in? Philly DFAed him...

Think of all the worry that Bloom got fleeced.

It appears he didn't get fleeced, but it might still be questionable protecting Ort, Brasier and Hamilton over Song.

Certainly, yes.

We may still end up with Song.

The Ward loss seemed worse, at the time, but he is pretty much forgotten, now- in hindsight.

And most of us who watched the pitching staff last year weren't as concerned over losing Song (who Dombro took a shot on), but Thad Ward -- who the Nats immediately took with the first overall pick...

Ward, now on the IL, maybe wasn't ready for the Show, but certainly had more promise than the trio you listed, among others that Bloom protected instead.

The one time Bloom seemed to care more about 2023 over the extended future, and he can't live it down.

Maybe because it showed a peculiar inconsistency.

Or that Ort, Brasier and Hamilton aren't much of a hill to die on, as the saying goes.

As it turned out, we needed a SS slot on the 40- maybe not DHam, but to me, it was never Ward v DHam.

I have no beef with Ort and Brasier points. They both were more ML ready and likely to help (and yes hurt, too) in 2023 than Ward.

Geez, Moon, do you really think Washington would've snapped up 35-year old Ryan Brasier with the first pick of the Rule V draft if he was available to keep them out of last place?

Bloom can't live it down because pitching is always the number one problem in Boston, especially developing pitching in the farm system, and there's no arguing that point -- no matter how many retreads he claims on waiver wires. And no one cares how old Ward was, he was still a mound prospect...

I said I was always fine losing Brasier and Ort.

Bloom chose two 2023 options over the future.

BTW, someone did snag Brasier. Lol!

Hindsight is 20-20, but not keeping ward was a head scratcher

The Sox didn’t need to dedicate any 40 man roster spots to any position in December. In fact, they added multiple shortstops after the Rule 5 draft, including Mondesi, Chang and Reyes.

However, what is lost in all this of award hasn’t been very good, and has secretly been worse than Ort. Certainly he’s young (albeit not that young) and could improve. But so far, he’s not someone I miss. Much like most NL East bats…

Reyes was added after the season started. Mondesi was known to be starting on the IL.

The fact that we added SSs after Rule 5, makes it more understandable they protected DHam, not less.

I was all for protecting Ward over Brasier and Ort. I was okay with DHam's protection, because I assumed they thought of him as ML depth. He did get called up, but he did not earn a stay.

I was just saying what I felt the Sox reasoning was- not that I agreed with them, on this.

They protected Hamilton because of the change in the game in regards to base stealing, not due to where he plays defensively. It's well known that he's not a very good SS and that he wasn't really going to be an option for BOS at that position. They were already looking at moving him off position or making him a UTIL last year.

True, but they probably also felt they needed MI depth that was ML ready.

Again, I'd have kept Ward over 3-4 players we chose to protect.

If that was the case, they would have used Hamilton sooner than they actually did this year. Right?

I thought so, and wondered why, at the time.

@SoxProspects

Stanley Tucker, the Red Sox 19th round pick in the 2023 draft, is playing center field and leading off for the FCL Red Sox today marking him as the first member of this year's draft class to get in the lineup.

WOO won the game because of this play and I love the spiked ball by Stephen Scott.

Rafaela went 1 for 1 with a HR, SB, 1 OF assist and 4 BB's

Scott went 2 for 5 with a HR, 3 RBI and 1 spiked baseball

Abreu went 3 for 5 with 2 RBI, SB and 2 OF assists

Three golden stars right there...

I like scott a lot! He seems to make plays when the team needs them!
