Y'all need a slap in the face like the movies to calm down?

Do you disagree that he's an expensive DH that's getting up in years? Are you satisfied this was $100 million plus well spent?

Sox get blown out, so everyone needs to be in a sour mood I guess!

Well, it's also that they've lost 5 of 6, they're back to .500, they have about a 10% projected chance of making the playoffs, the rotation is a shambles, stuff like that, too, I think...

So he’s already a bust?

I think he’s been better than I thought he would but never thought he would be Ichiro 2.0.

But if he’sa busy already, who was the last free agent the Sox signed to a multiyear deal that wasn’t a bust?

A month ago, he was a great signing.

The board has gone extreme fickle.

This is unfortunately a streaky team and the mood swings to the current streak…

The crowd gets bigger on the down streaks, too.

If he hits well enough, sure. At the rate contracts are exploding, he'll be a bargain if he's an above average hitter in a couple years. Calm down.

I'm mainly complaining about Yoshida in view of Bloom supposedly being under spending restrictions and supposedly operating under a plan to build for the future. Not sure how a big outlay on Yoshida makes a lot of sense under those conditions. Especially when there's so little being spent on starting pitching.

Except for the 10% chance of making the playoffs part...

That has gone up and down, some, but not by much, when 5 over .500 or at .500.

BTW, fangraphs has 16%.

It's not easy when the other 4 division teams are over 58%.

He can hit, he's a draw for the Japanese market, and has a skillset that tends to age well. Trevor f***ing Story on the other hand......

Story can hit, is a draw for the Trevor market and can field 2b rather well which should age ok.

....if he can throw.

At 2b he can.

We'll see, but he wants to play SS. Something tells me that's not going to end well. I'll be honest, I never liked the Story contract. Here's hoping he makes me eat crow.

When Mayer is ready, he's not playing SS anymore anyway.

That's a very good point.

And if Yorke is ready and can play an average 2b what are they going to do with Story? I agree that the Story pickup seemed like a "hey, this guy's price tag is below market, let's grab him on clearance" and they didn't consider the downstream effects.

Yes, and it's things like this that make me question Bloom's acumen in some areas. His approach can be the best in the world, but if he whiffs on the big moves, it's a serious problem.

That's if it even is a Bloom move. That's the problem, we just don't know.

True, but it wasn't really what you'd call a PR signing. I'd say Sox fans in general were underwhelmed and confused by it, and many of course figured it meant Bogaerts was gone.

He has a guaranteed contract through 2027. I can reasonably assume that they'd have somebody who could play 2b at a cheaper price by 2025. Are they just going to eat 3 years of that contract? He can't play 3B. Move him to the OF? Yoshida seems like the best bet to just DH. Hope for a bounce back season next year and deal him?

Probably. And that's assuming they can fill the 2B position by '25, which is a fair assumption, but still an assumption.

Guys that could play in 2025: Valdez, Hamilton, Yorke, Meidroth, Bonaci (late 25)

I never realized he's very undisciplined at the plate. Very high strike out rate. I guess he can get on hot streaks.

It baffles for me that now the team is insisting he play shortstop. I thought they liked him at 2B.

So you think they should have avoided Story because of some high school kids they drafted (or in the case of Mayer, hadn’t drafted yet)?

They’ll worry about that depth when it becomes an issue, like every team has done ever…

I think the team viewed Story as a 2nd, but a guy who could play SS for 1-1.5 years until Mayer was ready if they failed to resign Bogaerts. Which is exactly what happened, then Story got hurt, and then apparently everyone else at the position as well this year. From what we know, it seems the Story situation wasn't shocking, but the other injuries were just bad luck.

It's truly amazing, not in a good way but amazing the trails and tribulations which has become SS for the Red Sox. A product of BOTH incompetence at the front office AND bad luck.

Valdez knows where 2b is on a diamond. His ability to play the position competently is debatable…
