Chafin signs for $5.5M with AZ with 2nd year option at $7.5M with $750K buyout.

All my remaining bullpen options signed in a 24 hour stretch.

Not sure who is left to get excited about.

Maybe Matt Wisler or Matt Moore? Not exactly players who make my stomach flummox and my liver quiver…

tI liked the guys you liked. None made a ton of money or got long deals.

Let's see how they end up doing.

Wait. Are Elvis’ kids teenagers?

If so, a one year league min deal might work. Maybe not today, but in time…

No, they are t-ball age per wikipedia.

Ahhhh, Tee-ball... where baserunners go home to third, players sit in the infield and shake pedals off dandelions, 99.9% of the plays are made/attempted at the mound and at first base, and time-outs are mandatory any time anything flies overhead: bats, balls, gloves, juice-boxes, red-tail hawks, UAPs shooting down UFOs, bumble bees-- "A bee, a BEE, run, it's after MEEEEE!!!!"

The question for big league dads: given a choice, would they prefer to help coach tee-ball or take a nostalgic 8-hour ride on a bush-league bus to an old minor league ballpark?

I guess it depends on where you play t-ball. From the experience with my kids, the difference in t-ball between MA and FL was stark. I can see why more ballplayers come from down here.

My experiences playing ball in New England and Florida are as stark as the weather.

Best time to coach kids, before they counter your every advice with “But my dad said…”

Andrus signs with CWS for just $3M/1.

This seems like a big whiff by Bloom & Co.

Hard to figure. But they think they have things covered. We shall see.

In any case it's puzzling a guy who totaled 5.1 fWAR over the last 2 seasons could only get $3 mill.

He's getting old, but he seems to be aging well.

Maybe he just wanted to stay in Chicago. But Boston is apparently done spending.

John Henry's comment reported in a recent email spells it all out. When asked if the Red Sox would compete again on the same level as the NY and California clubs, he bragged he had more titles than all of them combined this century and added: "... if you are asking if we are going to now move into $300 million payrolls, the answer is no."

Chaim just telling you what I read...

The Red Sox thought they had things covered last year too.How did that work out?

It seems like we could have easily afforded $4-5M/1 for Andrus and still had some for the deadline, if needed. When you subtract what we are paying Chang, it's an even better choice.

I realize Mondesi has some nice potential, and Arroyo does well, when healthy, but this seems like a bargain missed, and bargains is where Bloom is supposed to be at his best.

Having Andrus in the fold would have allowed Kike to be the primary OF fill-in, when not playing 2B or SS. We would have been a bit too crowded at middle IF with Andrus, Kike, Mondesi and Arroyo all out of options, but with Kike's ability to play OF, very well, I think they could have worked out a plan where everyone plays enough to stay happy.

I guess Chang on the bench won't bitch about it.

One thing very clear about "the type" of spending this winter of Boston compared to the Mets, Phillies and Padres, among others: the Red Sox are not loading up their roster for a pennant push. They're just trying to field a team.

Angles have never spent money well. Padres have never won a WS. Dodgers are resetting this season.

The amount of things that have to break right for them to make a playoff run is quite great. They won't compete for the pennant or the AL East title. They should be close enough to the WC to have meaningful games the last week or two of the season though. I don't think they'll be as horrible as they were last season or as bad as some people project them to be.

Hopefully, the Devers signing is money well-spent.

One thing no one ever brings up is how the Sox were willing to give Mookie $300 million, but when he wouldn't sign for that, they never came up with the bucks to sufficiently replace him with quality. For example, Toronto signed Springer for half that: 6 years, $150 million. He's no Betts, but he's no Franchy, either...

Well like you said the amount of things that have to break right for them to make a playoff run is quite great, and I think health in the starting rotation is the most important, but even if that happens no one knows what Sale, Paxton, and Kluber have left in the tank. It will be interesting to see, but I’m not that excited about it.

They had to reset the luxury tax! Don't want to hurt Henry's checkbook! When you let QO guys go, you don't want to be over the luxury tax because then your picks drop 2 rounds! Can't let that happen, silly!

Well, Mondesi certainly has more upside.

I thought I read somewhere, the Dodgers said they will not cut payroll to get under the line.

Had Bogey not opted out, they did spend $300M+ on Sale and Bogey ($400+ with Nate.)

Arroyo could certainly be better than Andrus, but his history has a lot of risks. I’m surprised they didn’t try harder for Andrus, who certainly wasn’t looking for big money or long years. At least not at this point…

I wonder if they tell him that buying an OFer glove will get him to not play for 4 different organizations in a year again?
