I don't think they would. They probably would want another year of seasoning at least. He's only been catching fulltime for one year.

Is he Rule 5 eligible?

"Would be selected" vs "could be selected." Would be for sure? No. Could be maybe? Yes. I think the Sox just need to decide which guy they want to keep on the 40 man. Seems like Hernandez didn't provide all that much upside last season and his defense still stinks. At least Scott has the versatility to play multiple positions.

RHern certainly did not step up in 2022, but .749 is not bad for a catcher and 44 XBhs in 410 ABs is a plus. They may want to give him one more year. It might come down to their decision on protecting Scott or not, but they may also move him and keep C Hamilton, Wong and McGuire as the 3 catchers on the 40.

Scott is eligible, but I have not heard his name mentioned for protecting by anyone, until MVP, now.

Chris Hatfield mentioned it on the last podcast.

@SPChrisHatfield

My thoughts for Tuesday.

Certain: Rafaela

Near-certain: Walter

Probable: Ward

Likely: Murphy

Toss-ups: W. Gonzalez, Abreu

Prob too far away: Paulino

May get picked, not protected: Politi

Of note: Fernandez, Wallace, Bonaci, Scott, Feltman, Koss, Hamilton, Jimenez, V. Santos

Okay. Not on the "may get taken list" could be telling.

I think protecting Rafaela/Walter/Ward/Murphy makes sense. I wouldn't protect Abreu. I would think about protecting Wikelman, but wonder if he's too far way. I'm not sure I'd protect any guy whose ceiling is middle reliever like Fernandez or Wallace. Jimenez and Feltman are close to post prospect phase. Not sure I'd be worried if Koss or Hamilton were selected.

Telling what? Please compare what he said on the podcast vs this tweet. I'll hang up and listen...

It may "tell" they don't think he's close enough to be on the "may" list.

If they think there is a chance Wikelman gets taken, I'd protect him over keeping some of the scrubs we have on the 40, right now.

I think W Abreu would be taken, if he's left unprotected. I'd protect him.

E Valdez needs to be added to the roster as a minor league FA, or he will be exposed to the Rule 5 draft. He is a lock for the 40, IMO.

Valdez was already added to the 40 man.

@brendan_camp

#RedSox officially add Enmanuel Valdez to 40-man roster, activate 5 players from 60-day injured list

Thanks. I missed that one.

So, we are at 37 with several bubble roster players that may go, when we add the rule 5 guys, add several more when we start signing FAs or trading for more 40 man roster players than we give back.

My DFA (Trade away) list is as such (in order of least liked:)

Chang

C Hamilton (maybe RHern but not both, unless we add Scott and think he could be called up to MLB in a pinch.)

J Reed

Ort

DHern

Seabold (Probably tradeable here and below)

Brasier

Cordero

Hosmer

Downs (not likely DFA'd here and below)

Duran

Wink

I’m higher on Jacob Wallace than most, but I think he could help the 2023 bullpen at some point. And if I ran a small market club, I’d absolutely take him in the Rule 5 draft if he was left unprotected…

Here's what SPs says about JW:

Summation: Potential volatile, up-and-down middle reliever. Ceiling of a late-inning reliever. Has among the best raw stuff for a true relief prospect in the system, with the potential for two plus pitches. Unique delivery gives hitters a very different look on the mound, but it also makes his future more unpredictable. Harsh delivery and inconsistent command and control profile give him low odds to reach his peak potential. Even if he reaches the big leagues, will likely have good stretches and bad stretches, making him tough to count on year after year. Very intense on the mound, always competes.

All of that makes him better than Brasier right now…

He's an interesting guy. My guess is that there are guys left unprotected on other teams that are better than Wallace.

Haven't seen much discussion about Koudai Senga on here. Is it because the Sox were out early on Suzuki last year?

No.

It’s because we don’t play on the West Coast and don’t have any Japanese players to help him assimilate.

The only reason he might prefer Boston is if he grew up in a generation that idolized Daisuke. Otherwise, what do we have to offer?

Sox have $90M+ to spend.

There is that.

Of course the Cubs reportedly have $125mill to spend plus his fellow countryman in Suzuki…

No, wait: reported interest.

Let’s see those 2023 outfields $5 per, $100 per Red (minus Kike) click is ticking…tic tok

I like it. "Reported interest" has nuanced levels of non-confirmation and non-commitment.

How I'm feeling about buying mlb.tv for 2023.

The Red Sox are exploring the pitching market early, putting out feelers on both starters and relievers. Two starters they are poking around on early, according to sources, are right-hander Seth Lugo and lefty Andrew Heaney.

C'mon, man!

C'mon, man!

Bloom does a lot of poking around. He's particularly pokey in offseasons and trade deadlines. He may just be the pokiest chief baseball officer in baseball.

Bloom is Pokey, and Dombrowski is Gumby... Dave sticks to all his club needs, his targets to acquire, and to the soles of his employers.

I needed a good laugh, this morning.
