Not if Hosmer opts out of his contract which is highly likely

Why would he opt out of the remaining guaranteed money?

To make more money. I doubt he will get an offer less than $13 in FA and will likely get more and he likely knows it.

Heck JBJ makes $12M.

Groome has been disappointing this year; I'm fine with the trade since the Padres are picking up so much of the money. I was hoping Groome would take a big step forward this year but that hasn't happened. At best, Groome looks like a bottom of the rotation starter, but his future might be in the bullpen.

With Hosmer in the house, I have to rework things for next year:

C: Wong

1b: Hosmer/Casas

2b: Story

SS: Swanson

3b: Devers

LF: Duran

CF: resign Hernandez? Rafeala takes over the starting job in 2024

RF: Gallo on a one year contract? I can't figure out the RF position and apparently the Red Sox can't either.

DH: Casas/Hosmer

At the time he signed it, Bradley was a better player simply by playing a more valuable position.

Oh wow - If this in fact is what we might be looking at for next year, I just can't wait. Ouch - I'll read more books, play more golf, and fish a lot more.

in the great tradition of Trey Ball:

Ball couldn't blame it on an injury though. Groome was a very good prospect prior to the injury.

He'll be 33 next year and hasn't been a 1 fWAR guy since prior to the SDP deal. No way does he opt out. If he does, no way does he get a deal better than 3/39. It's not going to happen.

When JBJ signed his 2/24 deal, he came off a 1.8 year in 2019 and a 1.6 shortened year in 2020. JBJ was twice the player Hosmer was AND 3 years younger.

Posters were complaining about receiving 23 year old AA prospects yesterday. Groome is 23 and in AA this year he had a 4.46 BB/9 and a 4.90 FIP. His k rate also plummeted. He got healthy, but just isn't pitching very well. A straight up trade of Groome for the two Padres prospects could probably be reasonable at this point as it clears a 40 man spot.

SD practically paid us to take Hosmer, no way Hosmer is getting another payday. He's a below-average offense firstbaseman. But who cares? his salary is paid for and we have Casas on the verge of a MLB career.

Are any other players involved?

If it’s just Hosmer plus his money, use him until you’re sick of him and DFA him while SD pays the fee…

Hosmer is not a game changer, but he does represent an upgrade. With San Diego eating nearly all of his salary, Hosmer has virtually no risk attached to him. If Hosmer plays well, the Sox can take their time with Casas. If Hosmer stinks, trade or DFA him with little loss.

Gallo? I hope you're referring to the wine. But, seriously, wouldn't Gallo just be JBJ, The Sequel? Sequels are usually worse than the original movie.

This doesn’t seem like selling or buying.

Bloom was never going to make a blockbuster type of deal this season, even if we hadn't had the awful July that we had.

The current team is improved, if only slightly, and the future outlook is improved, if only slightly. The fine line that Bloom was walking was a tough one. Perhaps the best moves will end up being the ones not made. The onus is on the existing players to do their jobs.

Maybe if Bloom had added JD to the deal, we could have gotten Orsillo. Maybe not.

I still don't understand why NESN parted with Orsillo to begin with.

All NESN will say regarding not renewing Orsillo's contract is "we want to go in a new direction." Whatever the hell that means.

If I had to guess, it was probably about money. Isn't it always?

Someone gave them bad directions. Going from Orsillo to O'Brien put them on the wrong road.

Because of that stupid muppet Tom Werner.

Hosmer's WAR over the last 5 seasons combined is +0.3. That's terrible.

He'll definitely get paid more than 3/39 in FA though!

I grant you OB is no Orsillo, but with my Extra Innings package I've been exposed to many game announcers when the SOX are on the road. Seriously, be happy the SOX have OB, because there's a whole lot worse out there.

The Met's crew is the best I have seen.

Hosmer is a professional hitter, though his OBP is sub-star.
The Hosmer deal is a good deal. He is a huge defensive upgrade and he is also an offensive upgrade (but not as huge). The deal doesn’t make sense to me in the context of his other moves. Without upgrading the pitching, this team cannot compete this season, and they have Cassas waiting not the wings to play 1B next season.

Good luck with the Brewers when they'll eventually have to replace Uecker. Similar to the SOX trying to replace Remy. So far, that hasn't happened and it probably never will.
